God gives us permission to meditatively ponder, even in the midst of our fragmented existence. He invites us to ''listen, that you may live.''

Many Christians are distracted and dissatisfied. The external demands of life grip us, while our inner walk with God becomes ever more superficial and thin. Is there hope for authentic connection with God in a world of distractions, or must we be resigned to a spiritually shallow existence?

Reflection, contemplation, and meditation are ancient practices that are losing ground in a highly technological world. Permission to Ponder examines the ways others have accepted the invitation from God to dwell deeply, beginning with ''the Four Marys of the Gospels.'' In the midst of their stories, the classical discipline of lectio divina--praying the Scripture-will serve as a template for praying and pondering all of life.

Just Say No to Superficial Living By JEFF B HORTON Hooked me from the first page of the Intro in which she quotes a TS Eliot poem including the line, "Where is the Life we have lost in living?" and then invites us to "ponder" our lives via the ancient model of Lectio Divina as an antidote to the "superficial living" so prevalent around us. Already familiar with the four-fold movements of Benedictine Lectio Divina (lectio, meditatio, oratio and contemplatio) I found it a fun look at the four Mary stories and how to approach life itself with the same contemplative reflection. The call to "lectio" ("reading"="listening") reminded me of Tracy's earlier book, "A Listening Life" (also highly recommended). I loved the idea of "meditating" ("pondering"/"treasuring"/"ruminating") on all of life and how listening, pondering and treasuring ought to lead us to both a sense of "reverence" as well as cultivating an awareness of God's presence and love throughout our days. The closing line, "... the world needs people who are deeply connected to the love of God" is in itself a good reason to consider the permission given to slow down and ponder our lives. In the words of Eugene Peterson's paraphrase of Matthew 6:33, to "steep" our lives in the reality of God's presence.

This book truly gives you permission to ponder deep, yet practical spiritual truths! Don't read it one sitting, but rather a chapter at a time and give yourself time to reread, ponder, and maybe journal, pray and then read some more! You'll learn about the ancient practice of Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) in a very creative way, thru the eyes of some key women in the New Testament and the rich life experiences and wisdom that Tracy brings. This book has helped me to open my imagination and thoughts more to receive Scripture's truth deeper into my life. It's not a hard read, but a relaxing and freeing read that indeed gives you "permission to ponder"!!!

In a world that discourages, Tracy's words guide us to an encouraging place where our souls are soothed as we ponder deep spiritual Jesus truths.
