This is a short little book written in a friendly, conversational style. It truly is a project that anyone can do. She walks you through the entire process, from tracing the scene from her provided template, through adding and blending colors, to filling in the patterns and completing the design. But don't let its brevity fool you. It is packed with tips on how to work with watercolor pencils and inked lines to really make your painting come alive. Her instructions are brief, to the point, and easy to follow. There is something very soothing about blending the colors with water and filling in patterns with black ink while watching the whole painting come to life. I couldn't stop once I started. I was always anxious to see what the next step added to the overall painting. I was thrilled with how my painting turned out. I hope Susan writes more books. This was a very fun project to do!Another review claimed that you shouldn't buy this book, that you could do this painting without this book. That reviewer overlooked the fact that this book is about "Getting Started" with zen and ink. If you haven't done this kind of painting before, you would have better success if you followed the steps in this book. I had never worked with watercolor pencils before and this book got me excited about doing more with watercolors. I, like many others, had always found watercolors to be a little intimidating. Susan's instructions showed how fun and easy it is to work with watercolor pencils and get vibrant results. Plus, Susan's tips about working with ink really sharpened the results of my work. So I'm really glad I had this book to help me get started.The other reviewer says to save your money by not buying this book or by getting a different book. I've taken local classes where a teacher takes students step by step though a complete painting in one evening. This book is a fresh new style and media not covered in those classes. I've found this little book to be just as helpful as many of those classes but its cost is almost negligible compared to the cost of those classes. I haven't seen other books that take you through a complete painting in this style, and nothing even close to it at this price. I would say if enjoy the step-by-step procedure of those kinds of classes, and if you haven't done this kind of painting before, save your money and get this book. It is a wonderful introduction to this kind of artwork!
