Shock and awe down a Mayan rabbit-hole By Robert Mottley Diego Kelly's "5 Unlucky Days" is a fictionalized memoir of what befalls Victor O'Brien, a lacrosse star and graduate student on vacation in Yucatan, after an accident propels him into a subterranean ethos where a line between ancient and modern Mayan culture cannot be easily drawn. I have to give this superbly crafted story a star for each day Victor is underground, as his rite of passage builds in tension. This saga is also about the bonding, verging on bromance, between Victor and Shield Jaguar, a warrior-like Mayan of the caves who acts as Victor's guide, interpreter, sponsor, coach in a life-or-death game of lacrosse (invented by Mayans, back when), and ultimately, savior. Diego Kelly has written a gem of a book, a time-travel fantasy in which the past is literally under one's feet, there for entering and leaving if you know how. The irony that many of the below-earth Mayans have day jobs on the surface works especially well. Such a duality suggests a richer existence, lives independent of apps on smartphones. Yet this feral underworld has its own terrors for the uninitiated. All in all, a hypnotic reading experience.

Entertaining as it is, it's also a travel guide for anyone interested in visiting the awe inspiring Yucatan peninsula. Every travel agent (those still exist, don't they?) should hand their clients this book as they board the plane to the land of the Mayans. Superbly written in the author's unique style, the characters pop out of the pages. This historically and geographically accurate tale mixed with the fantastical is a must for "Game of Thrones" fans. I'm sure the author is working on a screen play at the moment. Be the person who can say, "I read the book this is based upon." when it becomes a weekly television sensation. Fun stuff!

The author weaves in interesting details and provides fascinating historical insights related to the Mayans, Spaniards and the archeological community. I read this gem in conjunction with a trip to Cancun/Playa del Carmen and couldn't put it down. This book is sure to add to any readers appreciation of this beautiful and mysterious region and is a must read for travelers planning to visit Cancun/Playa del Carmen.
