Dead Dog Like Me, by Max Davis

Review Prolific author Davis (The Insanity of Unbelief) explores the natures of grace and forgiveness with this deeply intimate story of Nick Gregory, a wealthy, megachurch pastor who loses everything and wrestles with his purpose and faith. At intervals, Gregory is taken back in time and transformed into Mephibosheth, who considered himself a dead dog before the mighty King David. Fantastical elements aside, Davis's own biography tracks a similar course to that of his protagonist: the ascent to the head of a popular church and precipitous fall. Some readers may find the time-travel episodes a bit of a contrived way to explain the title, but others will welcome them, perhaps surprised to find their basis in the Old Testament. Davis writes a simple, straightforward style; the plot is easy to follow and the characters are engaging, particularly Gregory's lifesaving dog, Deuce. Regular references to messages from God and Satan might be unconvincing to nonbelievers. However, the uplifting narrative of a deeply flawed person living with the consequences of his mistakes and struggling to find a better way forward will be especially appealing to Christians seeking encouragement and redemption within their own lives. I opened the book as we were taxiing from the gate to the runway at Bush International Airport. I finished the read 4-1/2 hours later as we were rolling up to the gate in San Francisco. By far, Dead Dog was the most captivating, riveting book I've ever read! Max is a gifted storyteller with an inside understanding of Gods mercy and grace. Compelling from the first word, this story lasso's the reader into the life of a man who felt he was following Gods call, foresaking everything to be the servant he was destined to be. Deep, rich and full of energy to the last page, Max Davis has delivered his greatest work yet.

I became totally immersed in the spiral of events in the life of Nick Gregory, finding myself caught up on an emotionally level. When the story line suddenly shifted it lost the flow, but only temporarily. The shift added an element of the supernatural and intrigue that didn't disappoint me. I loved the way the novel ended, leaving me with a very satisfying feeling, unlike some novels that are a big let down leaving you hanging or wanting more information. Davis masterfully draws a complete circle. This novel takes you to the pit of hopelessness dug by your own hands and then resurrects hope in the most unexpected way. However, Davis doesn't cookie coat the healing process. This novel is raw and real. It's hard for me to imagine someone not personally relating to it on some level. It's nothing new for God to use stories to reveal himself to us. Sometimes a good story can minister to us far more than a bible study. The spiritual truths that Davis presents through the struggles of Nick and Abbi will linger on long after you turn the last page.

I read his book, Luke's Passage, in 2008 at a time when I was seeking. It was an impactful story at a time that God wanted me to see it. DEAD DOG LIKE ME is exactly the same, an impactful story right as God wanted me to see it.If you love a strong story with twists and turns, you have or seek hope, if you love dogs, and you love learning about faith and relationships, this is a great read. It's an easy read and a book I had to finish once I started. This book, for me, was a personal journey that spoke to me about mistakes, pride, mercy, grace, and hope. That His love is always there, that the enemy is ever-present, and that God works on us...all the time. It's not too heavy, but it does get intense. So many aspects of life in this book are real and will touch you.But when you finish the book. When you close the cover, you will feel touched in many ways across many areas of your life, and you will grow in your faith through this Blessing of a book.
