"They didn’t wake till late. When they did, the kids didn’t hesitate to separate the drapes and place plates to taste the pancakes mom would make. Nick’s mate created the greatest baked and braised meals, from marinated steak in paste to chilled veal, even charbroiled meat on the grill. Nicole hated waste but rarely overate, trying to maintain her weight and shape—without spanx. And she decorated their renovated cave in an ornate way. Since their first date, he rated her not as a ten or an eight but as more deserving of a cape than any lady to grace the earth’s face. But his wife was rightly a dime. Plus his bride couldn’t be bribed to tell him a white lie. For the sake of the race, it would behoove you to replicate their traits and relate to the way the faces of his family practically resonated placidly with the audacity of the galaxy. They embraced every day. And celebrated after days away..." --from Trapped in the Cracks (© 2015) by Clarence Williams On the surface is the gripping story of a brother's pledge of vengeance for his brutally battered sister--hospitalized by the ruthless head of one of the city's most notorious organized crime syndicates. Methodically peeling away layers of the characters' lives, the author exposes the contrasting journeys of several men and women through the criminal underworld. From the challenges of their inner-city upbringings to the crossing of their corrupt paths, their tales are laced with desperation, violence, malice, and hope. With its creative prose and intricate rhyme schemes, you are sure to close this book having treated yourself to one of the most unique and artistic works of fiction ever written.

About the Author Though Trapped in the Cracks is my first complete work of fiction, I have been a writer of prose and poetry for many years, and an avid reader most of my life. Writers who have had a profound influence on me over the years include Toni Morrison, Miguel de Cervantes, Edgar Allen Poe, George Orwell, Ralph Ellison, and Charles Saunders. Some of my favorite books of fiction are The Pillars of the Earth, Don Quixote, Invisible Man, Home, Tar Baby, Beloved, Memoirs of a Geisha, Animal Farm, Imaro, Kiss the Girls, The Coldest Winter Ever, The Alchemist, Angles and Demons, The Stand, and Crime and Punishment, amongst many others.Trapped in the Cracks was mostly influenced by the experiences of friends, family and myself while growing up in Gary, Indiana in the 90's. This was a particularly dismal decade for the city. Through abuse and/or distribution, drugs touched nearly every family. Ensuing gang struggles over territory and profit skyrocketed Gary's per capita murder rate--at times exceeding that of major U.S cities. My most enduring memories of this dismal period are of nights when the sheer volume of gunfire was mind-bogglingly senseless; and seeing addicts, who to me looked like zombies, seemingly strewn like litter up and down stairwells, spilling in and out of homes and aimlessly drifting down streets.Besides spending much of my youth in Gary, other life experiences that influenced this work include three proud years of service in the U.S. Army; two years of justly warranted, but definitely not regretted, incarceration; and nearly eighteen total months living in NYC homeless shelters. Through it all, I read.I was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. After seven years in the borough of Brooklyn, I relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I currently reside.
