It wonderfully weaves together the stocking tradition of Saint Nicholas with the true meaning of Christmas. The author explains gift-giving as a way of sharing God's love, just as the best and first gift--Jesus!--was His ultimate expression of love for us. It's a well-written book, with naturally-flowing rhymes and a simple but beautiful message.

Saint Nick & Christmas Stockings By Conny “Saint Nicholas loved Jesus and wanted to share God’s message of love with his friends everywhere,” Crystal Bowman writes in her children’s book, My Christmas Stocking: Filled with God’s Love.~ What ~This fourteen-page cut-out boardbook targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy a rhyming Christmas story. With no scary scenes, it explains how the legend Saint Nicholas started the tradition of giving gifts at Christmas. The illustrations are cute and charming; the book is semi-cut out in a stocking pattern.In this short tale that merges the bishop from Asia Minor in the fourth century and God’s love, the history of the man Americanized as Santa Claus explains how he loved Jesus and gave presents wherever he went. Hiding the gifts in stockings, he started the tradition that many celebrate at Christmastime. The ending reminds us that Christmas is about God’s love and Jesus.~ Why ~Being innocuous in rhyming verse, the story teaches young ones where the idea of Christmas stockings came from and who Saint Nick was. It vaguely refers to Christ’s birth.~ Why Not ~Focusing on a man and not the Savior being born into the world, the book may not be well-received for those who do not consider Saint Nick or Santa Claus as the true meaning of Christmas. With no mention of Jesus being born of a virgin and given gifts by wise men, it concentrates on the non-Biblical aspect of the holiday.~ Who ~Having written many stories and books for young children, author Bowman enjoys teaching kids about Jesus and His love for them. Illustrator Gevry loves to travel around the world, gleaning ideas for her artistic designs.~ Wish ~I wish the birth of Jesus Christ was the focal point in this book for young readers. Granted the author’s intention was to show how Saint Nick supposedly wanted to show others about God’s love by gift-giving, it glosses over Jesus’s birth.~ Want ~If you want a book about Saint Nick while mentioning God’s love, this may work for you, but others may consider it a focus on “Santa” instead of Christ.Thanks to Zonderkidz for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reader’s honest opinion.

My toddler & preschooler love the illustrations & rhyming text. I love the message they are getting about giving gifts to show god's love for one another.
