About the Author
Cheryl H. White, PhD, is an associate professor of history at Louisiana State University at Shreveport. She has authored numerous academic works, including a recent biography of Confederate General and Episcopal Bishop Leonidas Polk, as well as several local histories. She is a frequent speaker and guest lecturer on topics related to her primary areas of interest, Christian church history and the history of medieval and early modern Europe.

The author mixed theology and history with her personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Her critique of (my word) "pop-Christianity" (no matter the name on the sign out front) is on point. The author's arguments for the old faith are compelling, even though I have a different take on some of the finer aspects.The author's journey is remarkable, and I am thankful for the opportunity to witness it through this book.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A thoughtful and stimulating spiritual journey By Matt This book is the story of one woman's journey away from and back to the Church. It is a personal story, to be sure, but it is aided heavily by the author's background in history and theology. The problems she's faced as she explains her journey resonated with me personally as someone who was raised around the Church but never fully a part of it, and as someone who struggles with finding meaning and peace in a heartbreaking and sometimes terrifying world. I honestly feel that this book, and the author's approach, really drive home the foundations of Christianity as expressed in Roman Catholicism when done right: Steadfast but compassionate, firm but embracing, unapologetic but friendly, honest and loving. It is also about the power and comfort of consistency, solemnity in Christian duty, and the joy of knowing Christ.I feel that the author also addresses the modern problems and challenges facing Christians. She touches upon them in a way that holds the primacy of Christian unity without being dismissive of the need for civil equality and respect for gays and women. I particularly enjoyed her powerful antidote to what another reviewer referred to as pop-Christianity.This book addresses things that would appeal to anyone curious about why people convert to Catholicism and how they might fall away. It naturally appeals to people who have left the Church but are considering returning, and have some lingering doubts about whether they should or could. And then there is someone like me - someone who has never been a part of the Church but always looked in. At times it has been with reverence, at times it has been with suspicion or distrust. This book ought to satisfy the skeptics of the Church if they read it with an open mind to at least understand why it is that for hundreds of millions, Roman Catholicism remains the repository of the truth and the greatest mysteries and joys. It was enough to satisfy me and has moved me to beginning the RCIA process.

An easy, enjoyable, and insightful read. Highly recommended for Episcopalians or other mainline Protestants who have grown tired of rudderless, ever-evolving theology.
