Overlord: An Event Group Thriller (Event Group Thrillers), by David Golemon Review
“A unique spin on the Book of Exodus and the defeat of Pharaoh's army…The mix of legends and history has always been an asset to this series, and Golemon's imagination seems to know no bounds. Fans of the TV series Warehouse 13 or the action-adventure novels of Cussler and Rollins will lap this up.” ―Booklist on Carpathian
“Explosive…tense, terrifying--and worth the investment.” ―Associated Press on Ripper
“A tale worthy of the giants of the genre like Clive Cussler, James Rollins, and Matthew Reilly, Legend is a definite must-read for action and adventure fans. Don't miss it.” ―Megalith.com on Legend
“The author…draws the reader in with an intriguing prologue…satisfying adventure.” ―Publishers Weekly on Legend
“Golemon can write action sequences with the best of them, and he lands a solid uppercut with this book. The depth of science fiction…is surprising and ingenious.” ―SFSignal.com on Legend
“Golemon combines his typical action-adventure fare with more thriller elements this time, and he focuses more on the personal stakes of his characters. …Golemon knows how to make readers turn the pages, and Primeval will only further enhance his reputation.” ―Booklist
“Fans of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea will enjoy Golemon's recasting of the Jules Verne novel.” ―Publishers Weekly on Leviathan
“Golemon's third novel in the Event Group series proves to be his best yet….a mix of the James Rollins action-heavy adventure, the military gadgetry of Tom Clancy, the pacing of the television series 24, and the conspiracy theories devoured by fans of the radio show Coast to Coast AM.” ―Booklist on Ancients
“The Roswell Incident--whether legend, fact, or some combination of both--has inspired countless novels and movies over the years, but David Lynn Golemon's Event peels back the layers of Roswell with refreshing originality. The action is spectacularly cinematic, the characters compelling, and the story is a flat-out adrenaline rush that pits real-world, cutting-edge military technology against a literally out-of-this-world threat. Even better, the Event Group itself is one of the best fictional agencies to arise in the literature of government conspiracies.” ―New York Times bestselling authors Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens on the Event Group Thrillers
“Fans of UFO fiction will find this a great read, and fans of military fiction won't be disappointed.” ―SFsignal.com on Event
“Imagine mixing in a blender a Tom Clancy novel with the movie Predator and the television series The X-Files....readers who enjoy nonstop action and lots of flying bullets will enjoy Golemon's series.” ―Library Journal on the Event Group Thrillers
“Golemon puts his military experience to good use in this promising [series]…evokes some of the early work of Preston and Child.” ―Publishers Weekly on the Event Group Thrillers

Time after time the jerk Speaker of the House is called SENATOR (whatever his name was). Was anyone paying attention to continuity in this book? One cannot be a Senator AND be Speaker of the House of Representatives. There were numerous instances where absurd numbers were thrown out that simply made no sense in the context given. Number of personnel, number of casualties, number of ship based weapons, illogical distances in space.

The event group series takes us through many mythologies and histories... Filled with action and imagination. I really enjoy reading the series. There is one thing that continually takes me out of each of these stories... The character of Jack Collins.Jack Collins role at the event group has been that of chief of security. Unfortunately, during his tenure the event group complex has been breached at least twice. That alone suggests his security measures have not been effective... When you consider the decades the event group complex has existed without having been breached, this failure becomes even more significant. In one of the recent books before Overlord, Jack Collins is the one who has a tracker placed on him by an enemy agent. Jack Collins doesn't even realize he is carrying the tracker that leads the enemies directly to event group complex. Seriously... The head of security has no countermeasures for a simple tracking device?I mention all of this to support what I'm about to say. In the story we are asked to believe that Jack Collins is one of the most elite, strategic leaders the world has to offer. In this story alone so much is placed on his shoulders to lead the defense of earth. Unfortunately, there really isn't any evidence in this series to suggest Jack Collins is particularly suited for such a role.In this story alone, Jack Collins spends more than half the book either seeking out to murder the person who killed his sister, defying orders to the contrary, riding in planes to a destination he is clueless about and put in charge of executing on a plan he is completely in the dark about.Even in this book, we don't see anything in Jack Collins behavior to suggest he is the leader that the world needed during the crisis presented in the story. What we are given is the opinions of other characters that Jack Collins is this amazing leader. What they reference as evidence is his behavior in previous stories. But if you go back over those stories and really analyze Jack Collins performance, you see a person who does not lead, jumps into conflict situations without a plan and typically only survives by luck not strategy.I really do enjoy reading these stories, but I find myself having to make significant suspensions of disbelief in order to accept Jack Collins' character as a leader.

Mohr SPOILER ALERTS IN THIS REVIEW, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ IT YET.I really enjoyed this book; it has actually been quite a while since I last read an Event book, so I was a bit rusty on the characters and the plot, but it came back to me as I read. I was able to read about half the book on and off over the last month, but I finally the finished the last half in a marathon read during a long fight. Here's some of my criticisms:1. David, you need a technical expert, or at least a proofreader, when it comes to military hardware. As a servicemember myself, and an avid firearms enthusiast,I get very frustrated when an author doesn't do a cursory check on the hardware he is writing about. In this book, there are numerous caliber mistakes (7.65mm when 7.62mm needs to be used), hardware mistakes, and designation mistakes (AH-64, not AH-69), just some examples.2. I am also an astronomy enthusiast, this coupled with the above is what made this book so appealing to me. David, the Hubble space telescope cannot see images in real time millions of light years away. Hence the term "light years." If the Hubble captured these images, it was seeing what was there millions of years ago, not right now. This put a big kink in the book for me, because this was a major point in Overlord and it is simply not possible. Obviously, this series requires a deal of suspension of disbelief. But when an author attempts to make it accurate but then flubs the most basic detail, for me personally, it negatively impacts my enjoyment.3. I understand shaking some rust off at the beginning of the book, but I don't know quite why the author insists on making sure everyone is introduced in every chapter by their full names. After the first couple chapters, and the series, I know who Will is. I know who Ryan is. etc. etc. But the dialogue is very choppy. If I were to walk into my squadron tomorrow, I would not say, "Tell Major Jack Collins I say hello." No, I would say, "Tell the Major I said hi," or, if I was a friend, "Tell Collins yo." Even in conversation, the characters insist on using title and full name even in casual conversation. I dunno, I guess it's just weird for me is all.4. The use of the term "brevet" that is completely wrong. Brevets are honorary ranks with no actual authority. Jack and Everett were not a brevet General or brevet Admiral, respectively. What they actually were were temporarily commissioned to a higher rank. Had they been brevets, they would not have been able to hold the commands they were given. I'm sorry, but a basic dictionary query would have nipped this one in the bud.Okay, those aside, I did really like the book. The plot was solid and I felt there was a nice even flow. I look forward to many more books from this author, and I hope they keep improving as they have been. Good luck!
