Scott Benison and his small team of military journalists have great Army assignments, writing press releases while stationed in Hawaii. Their lives become more complicated as they view strange things happening to a brigade undergoing combat training at Schofield Barracks. Though the brigade is scheduled to fight in Vietnam, it seems to be failing in many ways, and troop morale has hit rock-bottom. When an angry brigade soldier murders his first-sergeant and kills himself, Pentagon generals postpone the unit’s Vietnam deployment. Learning of the murder-suicide, and the low performance of the brigade, the Pentagon assigns unit command to one of the Army’s strongest combat generals, with orders to transform it into a new kind of fighting unit that becomes a model for winning in Vietnam. As Benison completes his short Army career, he is enticed to a civilian job in Vietnam, with a mysterious military contractor. Working with the press corps covering the war—especially his friends from the brigade in Hawaii—he meets a smart, beautiful woman reporter who joins him in launching strategies that ultimately lead to American success in Vietnam. When the two return to civilian life in the US, they help key government leaders in changing America’s future, as the country overcomes major peacetime problems.

The Victory That Wasn’t is a great read, well written with excellent research By Eric Fisher The Victory That Wasn’t is a great read, well written with excellent research. I enjoy alternate histories, and this book includes a seamless combination of fictional events and real history that few people have written about. The story keeps you guessing which is which. At the end, the author’s afterword tells us what was real and what was fiction. The book has the authentic feel of someone who really was a military writer during the Vietnam years. Nicely done!

By bobbrownson I was in the US Army in Europe just at the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict but did not serve there. As a veteran on Active Reserve after mustering off of active duty I was subject to call up for 6 years. For this reason I was most especially interested in the day to day news in Vietnam. I had many friends there and some that did not survive. The Victory that Wasn't is a book that I might have wished was historically correct because it shows how major events were triggered by seemingly minor details. I have been to Vietnam many times since the war and have always marvelled at the resilience of the people and the almost unanimously gracious welcome that I enjoyed both in South as well as North Vietnam. There are many strings running through this book and at the end all have been ticked and tied very neatly. There are many lessons for us in this book, especially in an election year. Chief among these lessons is "Be careful what you wish for!". Think about what it really means to be Commander in Chief.

It’s well-written, and offers a picture of how things could have been different during the Vietnam War. It’s an alternate history that shows how America could have changed, if only a few things in the background had been different. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a history, and likes a story with a happy ending.
