Engrossing and fast-paced By horrorgirldonna Myanmar (or Burma), under a tyrannical dictatorship for five decades, holds its people under fear and complete control. Aung San Suu Kyi is a political prisoner under house arrest for most than 15 of his 21 year-sentence is known as “Burma’s Mandela,” but now has the chance to change the future of her beloved country in the upcoming election in 2015.The freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner is pushing to lead her country to freedom with her leadership skills. She is quickly swaying many voters to her side, but still there are other who believe she is only a puppet of the west because of her British family ties and democratic views. But there are other players involved, like those who are trying to rig the balloting just as they had done in the 2010 election.Suu Kyi is Burma’s final hope for liberation, but is she there for the west’s gain? Her enemies are many within the Myanmar government and the possibility that she might be assassinated continues to grow in this fictional-based-on-fact account.I have little knowledge of Burma or its political history or current stance, but the book was engrossing and provided me with some in-depth history of an interesting culture. Well-written, fast-paced, and captivating, I surprised myself by my interest in reading and quickly finishing this book (I typically have little interest in political fiction). Peter Simmen has done a terrific job drawing the history of the troubled country while pairing it with a good piece of fiction. Engaging— and I thought the US boasted the most corrupt government in the world!

I have a bachelors in history and I am one of those weird people who in their spare time watch history documentaries on Youtube. However, I am more in tune with American history pre-20th century. Once things like zeppelins and vacuum cleaners come along, my knowledge becomes a bit scattered. You can guess I literally had no knowledge about Burma, except that it was a country. Okay, well, that isn't fully true. As this book mentions, there was a very famous uprising that happened on August 8, 1988 that I kind of knew about (remember the uprising, forgot the country). The only reason I know about that is because is happened on the day I was born (go me showing my age and stuff).I love the portrait on the cover a lot. It's very beautiful and with the red background it pops.The first couple chapters are purely fictional focusing on the assassination of Aung San Suu Kyi (she's still alive if you're confused) and the reaction of the corrupt Burmese government and its saddened and angered people and the rest is more of a nonfictional account with citations.I enjoyed how I got to learn different subject matter. To me it's all brand new material to absorb. I have never heard of any of these people in my life and it was incredibly fascinating to learn the in-depth history. The author even had a lot of citations and sources to back things up.

By Jaime Torres This book does a good job for entertaining readers while they learn the history of Bruma; it provides a short fictional story of the horrific events of what would happen if Aung San Suu Kyi was assassinated, and each chapter has a blend of history and narrative as the author shows you the reality of Bruma in the past, present, and potential future. However, that is not why this book was written. This book was made to show the world of the atrocities in Bruma, and the author has found their own way to bring the travesties of Bruma to light. While I read this book, I enjoyed how it wasn’t a simple history lecture, but knowing that these incidents did happen helped me realize the message that was being sent; to help the citizens stand up against their oppressors in any way we can. Peter has done an excellent job on explaining Bruma’s situation for anyone to understand and presenting a call to action. If you’re interested in what is happening in Bruma, or simply want to learn about the history, this is a great place to start.
