“The Victory That Wasn’t” begins with people in Hawaii who unknowingly change the course of the Vietnam War, and the new America that follows it. The story is based on real behind-the-scenes events known by only a handful of people. Could minor changes in their actions have resulted in a different kind of America? In “The Victory That Wasn’t” a few subtle shifts trigger a cascade of actions that change everything. Scott Benison and his small team of military journalists have great Army assignments, writing press releases while stationed in Hawaii. Their lives become more complicated as they view strange things happening to a brigade undergoing combat training at Schofield Barracks. Though the brigade is scheduled to fight in Vietnam, it seems to be failing in many ways, and troop morale has hit rock-bottom. When an angry brigade soldier murders his first-sergeant and kills himself, Pentagon generals postpone the unit’s Vietnam deployment. Learning of the murder-suicide, and the low performance of the brigade, the Pentagon assigns unit command to one of the Army’s strongest combat generals, with orders to transform it into a new kind of fighting unit that becomes a model for winning in Vietnam. As Benison completes his short Army career, he is enticed to a civilian job in Vietnam, with a mysterious military contractor. Working with the press corps covering the war—especially his friends from the brigade in Hawaii—he meets a smart, beautiful woman reporter who joins him in launching strategies that ultimately lead to American success in Vietnam. When the two return to civilian life in the US, they help key government leaders in changing America’s future, as the country overcomes major peacetime problems.

The Victory That Wasn’t is a great read, well written with excellent research By Eric Fisher The Victory That Wasn’t is a great read, well written with excellent research. I enjoy alternate histories, and this book includes a seamless combination of fictional events and real history that few people have written about. The story keeps you guessing which is which. At the end, the author’s afterword tells us what was real and what was fiction. The book has the authentic feel of someone who really was a military writer during the Vietnam years. Nicely done!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A well crafted story, meticulous research and it could have been true. By bobbrownson I was in the US Army in Europe just at the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict but did not serve there. As a veteran on Active Reserve after mustering off of active duty I was subject to call up for 6 years. For this reason I was most especially interested in the day to day news in Vietnam. I had many friends there and some that did not survive. The Victory that Wasn't is a book that I might have wished was historically correct because it shows how major events were triggered by seemingly minor details. I have been to Vietnam many times since the war and have always marvelled at the resilience of the people and the almost unanimously gracious welcome that I enjoyed both in South as well as North Vietnam. There are many strings running through this book and at the end all have been ticked and tied very neatly. There are many lessons for us in this book, especially in an election year. Chief among these lessons is "Be careful what you wish for!". Think about what it really means to be Commander in Chief.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book. By ben g. I enjoyed this book. It’s well-written, and offers a picture of how things could have been different during the Vietnam War. It’s an alternate history that shows how America could have changed, if only a few things in the background had been different. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a history, and likes a story with a happy ending.

A Fictional Telling of a Real Revolutionary War Heroine

“But what can women do in times of war? They help, they cheer, they inspire, and if their cause is lost they must accept death or worse. Few women have the courage for self-destruction. "To the victor belong the spoils," and women have ever been the spoils of war.” ― Zane Grey, Betty Zane

Betty Zane was a strong, young frontier woman living in a man's world. In this, Zane Grey's first novel, Betty and her brothers live in Fort Henry, West Virginia and are key figures in one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War.

CHAPTER IThe Zane family was a remarkable one in early days, and most of its members are historical characters. The first Zane of whom any trace can be found was a Dane of aristocratic lineage, who was exiled from his country and came to America with William Penn. He was prominent for several years in the new settlement founded by Penn, and Zane street, Philadelphia, bears his name. Being a proud and arrogant man, he soon became obnoxious to his Quaker brethren. He therefore cut loose from them and emigrated to Virginia, settling on the Potomac river, in what was then known as Berkeley county. There his five sons, and one daughter, the heroine of this story, were born.Ebenezer Zane, the eldest, was born October 7, 1747, and grew to manhood in the Potomac valley. There he married Elizabeth McColloch, a sister of the famous McColloch brotheres so well known in frontier history.Ebenezer was fortunate in having such a wife and no pioneer could have been better blessed. She was not only a handsome woman, but one of remarkable force of character as well as kindness of heart. She was particularly noted for a rare skill in the treatment of illness, and her deftness in handling the surgeon’s knife and extracting a poisoned bullet or arrow from a wound had restored to health many a settler when all had despaired. The Zane brothers were best known on the border for their athletic prowess, and for their knowledge of Indian warfare and cunning. They were all powerful men, exceedingly active and as fleet as deer. In appearance they were singularly pleasing and bore a marked resemblance to one another, all having smooth faces, clear cut, regular features, dark eyes and long black hair. When they were as yet boys they had been captured by Indians, soon after their arrival on the Virginia border, and had been taken far into the interior, and held as captives for two years. Ebenezer, Silas, and Jonathan Zane were then taken to Detroit and ransomed. While attempting to swim the Scioto river in an effort to escape, Andrew Zane had been shot and killed by his pursuers. But the bonds that held Isaac Zane, the remaining and youngest brother, were stronger than those of interest or revenge such as had caused the captivity of his brothers. He was loved by an Indian princess, the daughter of Tarhe, the chief of the puissant Huron race. Isaac had escaped on various occasions, but had always been retaken, and at the time of the opening of our story nothing had been heard of him for several years, and it was believed he had been killed. At the period of the settling of the little colony in the wilderness, Elizabeth Zane, the only sister, was living with an aunt in Philadelphia, where she was being educated.Colonel Zane’s house, a two story structure built of rough hewn logs, was the most comfortable one in the settlement, and occupied a prominent site on the hillside about one hundred yards from the fort. It was constructed of heavy timber and presented rather a forbidding appearance with its square corners, its ominous looking portholes, and strongly barred doors and windows. There were three rooms on the ground floor, a kitchen, a magazine room for military supplies, and a large room for general use. The several sleeping rooms were on the second floor, which was reached by a steep stairway. The interior of a pioneer’s rude dwelling did not reveal, as a rule, more than bare walls, a bed or two, a table and a few chairs--in fact, no more than the necessities of life. But Colonel Zane’s house proved an exception to this. Most interesting was the large room. The chinks between the logs had been plastered up with clay and then the walls covered with white birch bark; trophies of the chase, Indian bows and arrows, pipes and tomahawks hung upon them; the wide spreading antlers of a noble buck adorned the space above the mantel piece; buffalo robes covered the couches; bearskin rugs lay scattered about on the hardwood floor. the wall on the western side had been built over a huge stone, into which has been cut an open fireplace. This blackened recess, which had seen two houses burned over it, when full of blazing logs had cheered many noted men with its warmth. Lord Dunmore, General Clark, Simon Kenton, and Daniel Boone had sat beside that fire. There Cornplanter, the Seneca chief, had made his famous deal with Colonel Zane, trading the island in the river opposite the settlement for a barrel of whiskey. Logan, the Mingo chief and friend of the whites, had smoked many pipes of peace there with Colonel Zane. At a later period, when King Louis Phillippe, who had been exiled from France by Napoleon, had come to America, during the course of his melancholy wanderings he had stopped at Fort Henry a few days. His stay there was marked by a fierce blizzard and the royal guest passed most of his time at Colonel Zane’s fireside. Musing by those roaring logs perhaps he saw the radiant star of the Man of Destiny rise to its magnificent zenith. One cold, raw night in early spring the Colonel had just returned from one of his hunting trips and the tramping of horses mingled with the rough voices of the negro slaves sounded without. When Colonel Zane entered the house he was greeted affectionately by his wife and sister. The latter, at the death of her aunt in Philadelphia, had come west to live with her brother, and had been there since late in the preceding autumn. It was a welcome sight for the eyes of a tired and weary hunter. The tender kiss of his comely wife, the cries of the delighted children, and the crackling of the fire warmed his heart and made him feel how good it was to be home again after a three days’ march in the woods. Placing his rifle in a corner and throwing aside his wet hunting coat, he turned and stood with his back to the bright blaze. Still young and vigorous, Colonel Zane was a handsome man. Tall, though not heavy, his frame denoted great strength and endurance. His face was smooth; his heavy eyebrows met in a straight line; his eyes were dark and now beamed with a kindly light; his jaw was square and massive; his mouth resolute; in fact, his whole face was strikingly expressive of courage and geniality. A great wolf dog had followed him in and, tired from travel, had stretched himself out before the fireplace, laying his noble head on the paws he had extended toward the warm blaze.“Well! Well! I am nearly starved and mighty glad to get back,“ said the Colonel, with a smile of satisfaction at the steaming dishes a negro servant was bringing from the kitchen.“We are glad you have returned,“ answered his wife, whose glowing face testified to the pleasure she felt. “Supper is ready--Annie, bring in some cream--yes, indeed, I am happy that you are home. I never have aa moment’s peace when you are away, especially when you are accompanied by Lewis Wetzel.”“Our hunt was a failure,“ said the Colonel, after he had helped himself to a plate full of roast wild turkey. “The bears have just come out of their winter’s sleep and are unusually wary at this time. We saw many signs of their work, tearing rotten logs to pieces in search of grubs and bees’ nests. Wetzel killed a deer and we baited a likely place where we had discovered many bear tracks. We stayed up all night in a drizzling rain, hoping to get a shot. I am tired out. So is Tige. Wetzel did not mind the weather or the ill luck, and when we ran across some Indian sign he went off on one of his lonely tramps, leaving me to come home alone.”“He is such a reckless man,“ remarked Mrs. Zane.“Wetzel is reckless, or rather, daring. His incomparable nerve carries him safely through many dangers, where an ordinary man would have no show whatever. Well, Betty, how are you?”“Quite well,“ said the slender, dark-eyed girl who had just taken the seat opposite the Colonel.“Bessie, has my sister indulged in any shocking escapade in my absence? I think that last trick of hers, when she gave a bucket of hard cider to that poor tame bear, should last her a spell.”“No, for a wonder Elizabeth has been very good. However, I do not attribute it to any unusual change of temperament; simply the cold, wet weather. I anticipate a catastrophe very shortly if she is kept indoors much longer.”“I have not had much opportunity to be anything but well behaved. If it rains a few days more I shall become desperate. I want to ride my pony, roam the woods, paddle my canoe, and enjoy myself,“ said Elizabeth.“Well! Well! Betts, I knew it would be dull here for you, but you must not get discouraged. You know you got here late last fall, and have not had any pleasant weather yet. It is perfectly delightful in May and June. I can take you to fields of wild white honeysuckle and May flowers and wild roses. I know you love the woods, so be patient a little longer.”Elizabeth had been spoiled by her brothers--what girl would not have been by five great big worshippers?--and any trivial thing gone wrong with her was a serious matter to them. They were proud of her, and of her beauty and accomplishments were never tired of talking. She had the dark hair and eyes so characteristic of the Zanes; the same oval face and fine features; and added to this was a certain softness of contour and a sweetness of expression which made her face bewitching. But, in spite of that demure and innocent face, she possessed a decided will of her own, and one very apt to be asserted; she was mischievous; inclined to coquettishness, and more terrible than all she had a fiery temper which could be aroused with the most surprising ease.Colonel Zane was wont to say that his sister’s accomplishments were innumerable. after only a few months on the border she could prepare the flax and weave a linsey dress-cloth with admirable skill. Sometimes to humor Betty the Colonel’s wife would allow her to get the dinner, and she wou...

Although the reader knows that it is fiction it is impossible not to feel that one is part of the unfolding drama. Betty Zane comes alive as she battles pride, traitors, and Indians to reach the arms of her lover Alfred Clarke. Mixed in this romance is the chilling fight for life by the whole pioneer settlement of Fort Henery. When completed the reader cannot help but be awed by pioneer life and the elequont writing of Zane Grey.

When he stumbles into an injust situation he just can't walk away. A man has been killed and the dead man's twin siters are being forced off their ranch. Brazos decides to help them find the killers and get their ranch back. If you enjoy westerns, especially Grey's westerns, you'll enjoy this one. It has an excellent story with a lot of action and a little romance for the hero on the side. For those of you who wondered what happened to Brazos after Knights of the Range ended, you will be pleased with this book.

By A Customer As a lover of the American West, I have read all of Zane Grey's western novels. This book is one of his very best. He combines his usual descriptive scenery as well as historical scenes in a very interesting fashion. As a woman, I believe this is one of his most romantic novels. The innocence of the relationships during this time period is just as exciting as a modern novel. I highly recommend this book as reading for all sexes.

As silently as it came, the curtain of mist lifted and was gone. James had already taken several steps before he realized that something was terribly wrong! His cry, “Where am I?” echoed back from the silent, still air. Stopping, he slowly turned around and stood facing the river. Stunned by this turn of events, he whirled and began to run towards the meadow. Nothing but a large, empty hay field greeted his eyes. Now thoroughly confused, he ran back to the river, looking for the tracks of the animals watered here only a short time ago. Again, nothing! There was no sign that the Wagon Train had ever been there! Little did he know he had stepped 113 years into the future. Join James in his travels to the future, leaving behind a past that he cannot forgot.

Elizabeth Payson Prentiss (1818 – 1878) was an American author, well known for her hymn "More Love to Thee, O Christ" and the religious novel Stepping Heavenward (1869). Her writings enjoyed renewed popularity in the late 20th century. Mrs. Prentiss has earned a high reputation as an authoress who presents religious truth in the form of narratives attractive to juvenile and often older readers. In this she shows how the course of Providence is full of incidents, which, however grievous or joyous in themselves, rightly improved, at once bring the Christian nearer to heaven, and ripen him for it. It shows a profound insight into the methods of God's dealings with his children, and the workings of a sinful nature and divine grace under the Severe disciplines of life. It is a book to help "heavenward" the erring and struggling soul; to teach useful and needed lessons to the unhappy and the afflicted; and to inspire all with nobler views of duty and higher aims of life.

By Cori White Really nothing I write will do justice to this classic biographical/novel of a young woman's journey through life and love. It is highly recommended by Elisabeth Elliot one of my spiritual mentors and those who have read her books will know what that means. I was immensely influenced by "In His Steps" in my teens, but needed a heart to heart view of another young girls's struggles to grow into a godly women as I moved into my twenties as an unmarried young woman. Elisabeth Prentiss' book addressed a real need I had as a young woman yearning to become a godly woman in a modern and sin ridden culture.

Heredia This book sat on my shelf for 2 years before reading it--wow how I wish I would have pulled it down sooner! It has been very readable--better than most novels! It puts in very approachable and applicable ways some of the most profound spiritual concepts of growth, obedience to God, and the strangeness of God's purpose for each of us. Do your self a favor and get this one--you will never be the same. Worth every late-night moment of lost sleep to read it!

By Danina My best friend and an incredible Christian gave me this book and I've already begun saving to buy copies for many of my Christian friends. This is a book which, if you let it, will change your walk with Christ, and I just thank God that He dropped it in my lap just at the moment when I needed to be reminded of His closeness and greatness. I can give it no higher praise than this: I would break off in the middle of fast-paced chapters because I couldn't go another moment without praying or reading the Bible. Definitely DEFINITELY *DEFINITELY* something to buy for yourself or a friend. Ideally, buy it, read it, and then loan it to the friend. There is no Christian whom this book wouldn't help.

Excerpt from The New Psychic Studies in Their Relation to Christian ThoughtIt is now nearly forty years since Hugh Miller sent forth to the Christian world the following words:"The clergy, as a class, suffer themselves to linger far in the rear of an intelligent and accomplished laity, a full age behind the requirements of the time. Let them not shut their eyes to the danger which is obviously coming. The battle of the Evidences will have as certainly to be fought on the field of physical science as it was contested in the last age on that of the metaphysics. By Renee Brous I might not have purchased "New Studies...' if I had realized that it was written literally 150 years ago. But it was interesting to compare a doctor of divinity of his day with those of today. Very little has changed but he was less accepting of ALL of the practices - especially automatic writting. Versus Echo Bodine who seems to think everything is of God.

Mask of Duplicity (The Jacobite Chronicles Book 1), by Julia Brannan

Review Fast paced, tale that is well written, with passion, action, fights, sensual tension, duplicity, treason, and finding a HEA for Beth. A must read for Historical Romance fans who enjoy action, adventure, and yes, treason. Well researched. I would strongly recommend "Mask of Duplicity" to fans of Scottish Historical, The Jacobite Rebellion and uprising, Historical Romance fans, and fans of Scottish-Brittish history. A fascinating story with a long cast of characters who will capture your interest and hold your attention. A true treasure! An enjoyable and satisfying read and one I would strongly recommend. ~ My Book Addiction and More

About the Author Julia has been a voracious reader since childhood, using books to escape the miseries of a turbulent adolescence. After leaving university with a degree in English Language and Literature, she spent her twenties trying to be a sensible and responsible person, even going so far as to work for the Civil Service. The book escape came in very useful there too. And then she gave up trying to conform and resolved to spend the rest of her life living as she wanted to, not as others would like her to. She has since had a variety of jobs, including telesales, teaching and gilding and is currently a transcriber, copy editor and proofreader.  In her spare time she is still a voracious reader, and enjoys keeping fit and travelling the world. Life hasn't always been good, but it has rarely been boring. She lives in rural Wales with her cat Constantine, and her wonderful partner sensibly lives four miles away in the next village. Now she has decided that rather than just escape into other people's books, she would actually quite like to create some of her own, in the hopes that people will enjoy reading them as much as she does writing them.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I can honestly say that I really looked forward to picking it up to continue with the story. I found the writing style so pleasant to read - I found it easy on the mind and I didn't have to struggle with it at all unlike some authors. That's not to say that it's written in a simplified manner, just that it suits my reading style. I was a little concerned at the beginning of the book by the large "cast list" but my fears were unfounded as it was not necessary to remember all the characters as they were introduced gradually throughout the book. The story is an interesting one and caught my imagination, which made it into a real page turner. The end of the story is satisfying yet leaves it open for another installment in another book, for which I know I will be purchasing. I've just got to know what will happen next!

By Angela Allen I love historical fiction and am always looking for a promising new writer to bring me strong, well-developed, and believable characters set against a tapestry of historical figures and events. I want to be able to believe that these fictional characters could have been unknown threads in the fabric of our history, not apparent at first view, but crucial to the weave. Julia Brannan provides that kind of character development. In Mask of Duplicity, the Jacobite Rising of 1745 entwines itself into the life of Beth Cunningham, a young woman whose life is dramatically changed when her father dies and her estranged half-brother, Richard, returns from serving in the military. Pulled from the English countryside and thrust into London society, Beth unknowingly stumbles into the tangled fibers of sovereignty, loyalty, and rebellion.Fans of the Outlander series will appreciate the way that Julia Brannan is able to bring these characters alive and make you want to give up sleep to keep reading. When you do close the book to get some sleep, you’ll drift off wondering how the characters are doing and what will happen next. If you’re like me, you’ll buy the second book, The Mask Revealed, within seconds of finishing Mask of Duplicity.

I loved the cover and read the fabulous reviews.... Then I got about 20% through and there in starts a my issues with this book and was surprised no on else commented on this.Spoiler Alert!!!!!The heroines half brother attempts to rape her! It was also described pretty graphically. I couldn't stomach it once I saw the road this was taking so I don't know what happened in the end and deleted it from my kindle.I normally don't leave reviews but I felt that others may be disturbed by this like me and would want to know before picking up the book.

By Lenoire I was recently given the opportunity to read "The Midwife's Tale" by Delia Parr and provide my honest opinion in exchange for an copy of the book. The story begins with widow and midwife Martha Cade delivering a baby faraway from home. Upon her departure and excitement to join the rest of her family back in Trinity, she receives news from her brother about her daughter running away to join the circus (does anyone else think of Water for Elephants?). At the time period the book represents, there is quite a "strict" family structure and code in place for the community. Daughters should be home until they are ready to be married and usually follow the career path steps of their mothers. The news, undoubtedly, shakes Martha to the core. She not only has to deal with a daughter whose whereabouts are not known but with being ostracize by the community. To make matters worse, Martha depends on being a midwife to support herself. After, the old doctor from their community dies a new younger doctor comes and believes there is only room for one of them. While, the book provide us insight into Martha's life as not only a mother, widower, a midwife, a community member but as a human who is simply trying to fit in and find a place for herself. The author does a good job creating believable but flawed characters. The book doesn't necessarily bills itself as a historical novel, but I wish it gave a bit more historic information on how lives of a midwife was like during that time period. The book does have little tidbits on how certain herbs cure ailments. The book was a bit a slow in the beginning but not painfully slow, although towards the end, there were so many twists and turns --- one should hold on! But, with that many twists and thrills at the end of the book, it made it feel rushed and that it should have been spread out more. Thankfully though, the book leaves no stone unturned and every question is answered.

In 1830, Midwife Martha Cade is away from her home in Trinity, Pennsylvania, helping a mother deliver her baby when she receives a note from her brother saying that her daughter has run off with a theater troupe during Martha's time away from home. Devastated that her daughter has run away from home, Martha leaves right after the birth to go search for her daughter.Nearly three months later, a discouraged Martha returns to her home in Trinity without her daughter. Upon her arrival, she discovers some new changes in Trinity, the biggest change being that a new doctor has come to town and is threatening Martha's livelihood as a midwife. As Martha is faced with several trials, will she have faith that God will lead her through this difficult time? The Midwife's Tale is a story that revolves around widow Martha Cade and her life in the small town of Trinity. Because Martha is a midwife, there are times in the story where we get to see her do her job as a midwife, delivering babies, and get an idea of what it would have been like to have been a midwife during the time. During Martha's adventures around town we are also introduced to several interesting characters, such as Samuel, the crusty old seaman who lives as a recluse, but who has let Martha befriend him; Fern and Ivy Lynn, the spinster sisters who run the confectionery in town; and a strong-willed orphan boy with crude manners who just needs someone to show him some love and kindness.I liked seeing Martha's strong faith in God throughout the story. She always trusts in Him, even when things are difficult for her. She also thinks of both her joys and troubles in life as gifts from God as there are lessons for her to learn in both.Honestly, this book was a bit hard for me to get into at first. It wasn't until I was about a third of the way into it that I became more interested in the characters and the storyline and it kept my attention. I think part of the reason I had trouble getting into it at first was because of the slower pace of the story; however, although the pace didn't pick up much throughout the story, the more I read the more I wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters, and by the end of the book I was glad I had finished it as I did like it. It was a sweet story with interesting characters, a bit of mystery, some plot twists, and with themes of faith, trust, love, and forgiveness. The story ended with a bit of a cliffhanger that makes me want to read the next book in the series to see what happens next in Martha's and the other characters' lives. Overall, even though it didn't keep my attention very well at first, it ended up being an enjoyable and light read and I plan on reading the next book in the series when it is released.*I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers through Book Fun in exchange for my honest review.

I'd Like to Return to Trinity By Full of Hope I'll confess that The Midwife's Tale by Delia Parr is yet another book for which I didn't remember whatever the book blurb had said before I started reading the book. I barely skimmed the blurb, but the cover of the novel is what got me, not so much on account of its loveliness but because the heroine depicted has gray in her hair. It's nice to read about a more mature protagonist when I can, and Martha certainly has her hands full in this story of small-town life, some suspense, and hints of romance. As far as midwifery goes, it was interesting to see it as a system and culture, not just a lone woman who appears to deliver a baby and disappears from the story again. Though the novel is labeled as historical romance, it's rather light on the romance piece, but it's more a story of Martha's journey of grief, joy, self-discovery, and faith. There are some pretty endearing moments of character interaction, humorous or downright cute, and one duo of ladies in town couldn't help but to remind me of the Baldwin sisters from The Waltons. While much of this novel is easy reading, not unpleasant, it does move slowly, and halfway through the book, the story didn't seem to have hit a clear stride yet, like it was still in the introductions stage. Martha's feelings about her daughter who has run off, Victoria, are well-expressed, but since I as a reader didn't get to see or meet Victoria for myself, I couldn't connect with Martha's sentiments about who her absent daughter is.The novel's strength is in its final fourth or so, and though it was a long time in coming, reading wise, it turned out to be enough to interest me in continuing on with the At Home in Trinity series._________________Bethany House provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.

What would you sell your soul for? And what would you do to get it back? Thousands of years ago, a man sold his soul for a woman he found in Lithuania. She carried the energy of Austeja, the Lithuanian bee goddess, and he refused to hear her songs. His choice to try and control her cost him his life and his soul, and he’s been trying to get both back ever since then. But there’s only two ways he can accomplish his goal: Either trade in her soul for his own, or undo his original wrong. Now, in contemporary times, he’s found her again, re-embodied as a young woman who works in marketing, and has no memory of her previous lives. She doesn’t recognize him. She only knows he might be able to get back a priceless family violin called the Amber, which her brother lost in a bad poker game. She must decide how much that’s worth to her, and he must decide if he’ll use her to achieve his own ends. The rich history of Lithuania, with its sacred trees and placid bees, is the backdrop for their drama, as they both face their ancestral past, and the imperative of their current choices.

In upstate New York silver-eyed Stacy Vitautis's Lithuanian grandmother taught her about the sacred trees and the bees, always advising her she would know what to do when the time came. She meets Nick Vecchio in a dive bar and her life becomes complicated. Bees build massive nests in her office walls, she can't stop singing or her urge to draw, her down-and-out brother loses the heirloom amber violin in a high stakes poker game. She would like to get it back to her family and Nick seems knowledgeable about ways to get it back. His talk of selling her soul for the Amber makes her wary, but she is nonetheless attracted to him, accepting his offer to help find the family violin. He takes her to Lithuania and her family memory comes crashing back with the discovery her songs have power over the bees and forces of evil linked to Nick. Stacy is the contemporary Austeja, the silver-eyed Lithuanian goddess of bees. Nick has been attempting to own and control Austeja since the first millennium. Austeja prefers death to being controlled. Stacy realizes her grandmother's advice implies she has more choices than death or being controlled. To save herself, her brother and Nick, Stacy has to find the solution she prefers and quickly.

After five long decades of tyranny under a series of military governments, the people of Myanmar (formerly Burma) still live in fear as their new military-backed “civilian government” continues to be influenced and controlled by former military dictator. Aung San Suu Kyi (Suu Kyi) is one of the world’s most prominent political prisoners and was sentenced under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of 21 years, which is why she is known as “Burma’s Nelson Mandela.” Suu Kyi now has a chance to change the fate of her beloved country in the general election in November 2015. The world renowned freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner is campaigning to lead her nation to freedom. With her strong leadership skills, Suu Kyi is winning the hearts and minds of the people and gaining political power. However, many citizens of Burma question her authenticity and view her as a western puppet due to her British family ties and promotion of democracy. The hidden and brutal forces that still control Burma plan to keep the masses oppressed for the next century and will do anything to execute their plan, such as ballot rigging as they have done in the previous general election in 2010. Aung San Suu Kyl is truly the last hope to liberate Burma, but is she only there for personal and western gain? She has many enemies within this current military-backed quasi-civilian government. For this reason, I ask the question: “what would happen if Aung San Suu Kyi were assassinated prior to this election?” Would China or the West get involved? What events would lead to a tragedy of this proportion, and how would the country heal itself in the aftermath? This book may be considered too controversial because it explores all of these possibilities. This heart-pumping fiction is based on some actual historical events. [Please note that this book is written as if the narrator is in 2025, but is retelling significant events that happened in 1933, 1945, 1962, 1972, 1988, 2007, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2025.] AUNG SAN SUU KYI: FREEDOM FIGHTER AND DEMOCRACY ICON OR ACCIDENTAL HERO AND WESTERN PUPPET? Engrossing and fast-paced By horrorgirldonna Myanmar (or Burma), under a tyrannical dictatorship for five decades, holds its people under fear and complete control. Aung San Suu Kyi is a political prisoner under house arrest for most than 15 of his 21 year-sentence is known as “Burma’s Mandela,” but now has the chance to change the future of her beloved country in the upcoming election in 2015.The freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner is pushing to lead her country to freedom with her leadership skills. She is quickly swaying many voters to her side, but still there are other who believe she is only a puppet of the west because of her British family ties and democratic views. But there are other players involved, like those who are trying to rig the balloting just as they had done in the 2010 election.Suu Kyi is Burma’s final hope for liberation, but is she there for the west’s gain? Her enemies are many within the Myanmar government and the possibility that she might be assassinated continues to grow in this fictional-based-on-fact account.I have little knowledge of Burma or its political history or current stance, but the book was engrossing and provided me with some in-depth history of an interesting culture. Well-written, fast-paced, and captivating, I surprised myself by my interest in reading and quickly finishing this book (I typically have little interest in political fiction). Peter Simmen has done a terrific job drawing the history of the troubled country while pairing it with a good piece of fiction. Engaging— and I thought the US boasted the most corrupt government in the world!

I have a bachelors in history and I am one of those weird people who in their spare time watch history documentaries on Youtube. However, I am more in tune with American history pre-20th century. Once things like zeppelins and vacuum cleaners come along, my knowledge becomes a bit scattered. You can guess I literally had no knowledge about Burma, except that it was a country. Okay, well, that isn't fully true. As this book mentions, there was a very famous uprising that happened on August 8, 1988 that I kind of knew about (remember the uprising, forgot the country). The only reason I know about that is because is happened on the day I was born (go me showing my age and stuff).I love the portrait on the cover a lot. It's very beautiful and with the red background it pops. The first couple chapters are purely fictional focusing on the assassination of Aung San Suu Kyi (she's still alive if you're confused) and the reaction of the corrupt Burmese government and its saddened and angered people and the rest is more of a nonfictional account with citations.I enjoyed how I got to learn different subject matter. To me it's all brand new material to absorb. I have never heard of any of these people in my life and it was incredibly fascinating to learn the in-depth history. The author even had a lot of citations and sources to back things up.

By Jaime Torres This book does a good job for entertaining readers while they learn the history of Bruma; it provides a short fictional story of the horrific events of what would happen if Aung San Suu Kyi was assassinated, and each chapter has a blend of history and narrative as the author shows you the reality of Bruma in the past, present, and potential future. However, that is not why this book was written. This book was made to show the world of the atrocities in Bruma, and the author has found their own way to bring the travesties of Bruma to light. While I read this book, I enjoyed how it wasn’t a simple history lecture, but knowing that these incidents did happen helped me realize the message that was being sent; to help the citizens stand up against their oppressors in any way we can. Peter has done an excellent job on explaining Bruma’s situation for anyone to understand and presenting a call to action. If you’re interested in what is happening in Bruma, or simply want to learn about the history, this is a great place to start.

Best Ebook Warsaw, by Richard Foreman

"Warsaw is a work of power. It has the authentic feeling that pulses from an important book. The meticulous research and psychological insights light up one of the most ghastly episodes in the history of man's inhumanity to man." Patrick Bishop, author of Fighter Boys and A Good War. The Warsaw Ghetto. 1942. Adam Duritz, a Jewish Policeman, is charged with the duty of selecting five people each day to be transported to Treblinka - or else he will be selected himself. Thomas Abendroth is a German soldier, trying his best to retain his humanity in the inhumane ghetto. Thomas befriends Adam. Both men make enemies of other people in power though. Yet, far more than his friendship with the German, Adam realises that his salvation resides in his love for Jessica Rubenstein. If he can save her, he may also save himself. Their fates - and those of others - will intertwine and be decided during a climactic evening on the streets of the ghetto, where love and tragedy abound – and collide. Warsaw is a novel which lingers long in the heart and mind. For fans of Dostoyevsky’s Crime & Punishment and Thomas Keneally’s Schindler’s Ark. Praise for A Hero of Our Time. 'An elegant novel which is awash with both hope and tragedy. A Hero of Our Time is a must read for anyone interested in WWII or 19th Century Russian Literature.' (Nigel Jones, author of Countdown To Valkyrie) Praise for Raffles: The Gentleman Thief. "Classy, humorous and surprisingly touching tales of cricket, friendship and crime." (David Blackburn, The Spectator). Praise for Augustus: Son of Rome. 'Augustus: Son of Rome forges action and adventure with politics and philosophy. This superb story is drenched in both blood and wisdom - and puts Foreman on the map as the coming man of historical fiction'. (Saul David, Author of the Zulu Hart series) About The Author. Richard Foreman is the author of numerous best-selling Kindle books, including Augustus: Son of Rome and the Raffles series of historical crime novellas. He is also the author of A Hero of Our Time, a literary novel set during the end of the Second World War. He lives in London.

The story follows Jessica , Adam and Thomas who all try to survive the Ghetto even though they stand on different sides. While Jessica and Adam have to deal with fear of death everyday, Thomas is coping with trying to retain his self and humanity. In this setting Foreman works a surprising and touching love story. Between Warsaw and Treblinka there is still love and friendship is possible. Besides the story there's plenty of historical information about the Ghetto, which complimented the fiction. This haunting and beautiful story leaves you cold with images of what life would have been like, together with the feeling of strength of the jewish prisoners and those who managed to survive under such brutal oppression. A special book in many ways.

By Briony Rose I'm a fan of the author's Raffles books and I received a copy of Warsaw in advance of publication. Unlike the short, witty novellas in the Raffles series Warsaw is dark, philosophical and imbued with an all too potent realism. The hero Adam Duritz is a descendant somewhat of Dostoyevsky's Raskolnikov, torn between despair and a desire for redemption. The author states in his end note how he wrote Warsaw partly in the tradition of the nineteenth century Russian novel. Both the reader and characters go on a religious journey in this book. The novel does not always grip the reader throughout consistently, but one is never far away from a gripping episode (whether learning about Adam's back story, travelling to Treblinka, having Thomas fence at a party or being plunged into a shoot out on the streets of Warsaw) which jolts the reader's attention or sensibility.Although centred upon the Jews and the ghetto Warsaw also devotes time to the History and psyches of German experiences of the war, mainly through the contrasting characters of Thomas and Christian (and the memorable and entertaining character of Walter the theatre critic towards the end of the book). You may need to read a Raffles story to cheer yourself after reading Warsaw, but can recommend it.

By LyndsayA A good book can be so for all sorts of reasons; a happy ending, characters getting their just desserts, but I find that a memorable or successful book is often considered so because of the difficult or troubling scenes such as the ones that occur in Foreman's Warsaw. These are the scenes that affect the reader so much so that they have the power to make you want to close the book or turn the page - and (despite some apprehension) I was glad to have turned the page. I enjoyed reading the background to the main characters, which drew me further into the story and helped line up the tragic events that unfold. The author does a good job of exposing the bleakness of life and the good and bad extremes of humanity as well as including a realistic portrait of the ghetto and Treblinka.

In 5093 ED Captain Greybeard set sail from Avalon in search of fabled Dorian’s Purse, said to hold secrets of immortality and divine ascension. His vessel was built from an ancient elvin design, superior to any known ship at sea, and christened the Kelshinua. Greybeard also had maps not seen by any sailor of the time. The word is he even breeched the dreaded V’Pohra Tanzhi. But before the quest could be completed, the ship went down in the turbulent waters of Torsham’s Vault. As the vessel sank, Greybeard thrust the treasured maps into Liam’s hands and threw him overboard. Liam, son of Greybeard’s only known child, spent twenty years seeking the purse, but failed. With no child of his own, he passed the maps to his sister’s adopted son, Jann Raul Jha’Ley. But who is Jann Raul, really? Does he have what it takes to pursue and solve a riddle thousands of years old? What of his growing obsession to sail around the world, a venture long believed to be impossible? And what is the connection with the half-elf who calls himself Timber Wolf? Winds of Torsham is not a sequel, but a Companion Novel to Call of the Wolf. Written in the same 1st person style by Timber Wolf, Winds of Torsham gives the reader critical insights of events, places, creatures and characters necessary to understand as the exploits of Timber Wolf & Company unfold. As well as new characters, we learn more of old ones: see Lath in her most glorious fight; meet U’Lahna, who does not know she has a brother; see Timber Wolf in his years as Coliseum Champion and what of his relationship with Edgarfield; learn more of Lushandri; meet the last survivor of The Kelshinua, or is he; follow Jann Raul Jha’Ley, the most acclaimed captain upon the sea, and the crew of the VNS Clarise; and what of the Great Alignment? J P Nelson again delivers with excellent character interaction and development, new species and fresh take on old ones, rich visual detail and an old world feel, fast swashbuckling action, ancient ruins, all centered around an intricate and well thought out continuing story arc. Winds of Torsham is a must-have for those following the Kohrinju Tai Saga.

By Louis E Wetmore I will confess that I was a little surprised when I saw that he had switched his main character-but ALL of the great writers (Tolkien, Anthony, Martin) have told entire sagas from different points of view-this creates a rich background tapestry that becomes as much of the tale as the story itself.Once I adjusted to this different point of view it becomes apparent that Nelson is not just going to create a story, he is creating entire realities! My only complaint might be that he is so rich in detail and description that it took a few minutes to come back to the real world after putting the book down! I suspect that Timber Wolf (from the first book in the series "Call of the Wolf" Call of the Wolf (The Kohrinju Tai Saga Book 1)) is going to be making an appearance again in the future...In a world that seems dead set on "30 second sound bites" and "complete resolution before the commercial break" entertainment it is unbelievably refreshing (and rare!) to have come across one of the genuine storytellers; one of the greats who can actually make you see and feel the characters as opposed to being spoon-fed lukewarm anecdotes. Make no mistake; you are going to have to totally immerse yourself the various worlds that make up this reality-don't be surprised if you have a little difficulty coming back.It is obvious that this series is set on building to a very high plateau-all I can say is to grab on with both hands and hang on for dear life!

Cathcart I really loved the first book, Call of the Wolf, and i really wanted to love this book just as much. I didn't like it nearly as much but i think that it is actually my fault and not the authors. My expectations were just much different than what really happens in book 2. The problem is that I was expecting the book to pick up right after where the first book ended. I was also expecting Timber Wolf to be the main character again. Unfortunately the books main character is Jha'Ley, who was introduced at the end of book one. Now don't get me wrong, he's a cool character, but he's not Komain/Timber Wolf. Winds of Torsham doesn't actually catch up to where the first book ended until the last few chapters of this book. There are some Timber Wolf scenes that take place at the time period of book 1 where he is a fighter/slave again. The problem i had was that every page i was reading I was hoping that we would catch up to where TW and Jha'Ley meet so we could get on with it. And it just kept not happening so instead of enjoying what was probably a good story, i just could not get into it. It's tough to enjoy a book when every page you are saying to yourself "come on already!" That's why I said earlier that it wasn't the authors fault that i didn't like it as much. I liked Timber Wolf too much and loved that he was the total focus of the first book and expected that to continue. I'm going to read the book again in a few weeks and I think I might really like it more now that I know what to expect. There is some hope at the end of Winds of Torsham that the focus will shift back to Timber Wolf in book 3. I really hope that happens because he is too good of a character for him to be in the background. There have been a few series that i ended up quitting because of this. Like Peter V Bretts Demon Cycle. In book one he introduced Arlen, who was an amazing character but in later books is in it so much less. I really hope this doesn't happen here. I don't think it will though and I'm still very excited for book 3. I hope that people read this review before going into this book because i truly believe you will like the book more if you know going in that Timber Wolf isn't the main character.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed the book By Christer Valkvæ I enjoyed the book, but in my opinion it spent to much time on introducing new characters and worldbuilding and not enough on TW. What made the first book so great, was to follow his journey and getting to know him and see him grow. When i started this book i assumed we would get to read more about him, but 80% of the book introduced other characters etc.. While i liked it i would have enjoyed a 50/50 split more. Still the series is fun to read, but intdocuing new main characters in a second book is a gamble.
