Billiwack, California, 1884. Cardno This is a really fun alt-history/sort-of-steampunk/wild-west/mystery mash-up. There's a potential supernatural element teased throughout (and I'm not sure we know the truth even at the end), there's weird science tech (not steam-based, but still reminiscent of the Wild, Wild West tv show), there's various levels of political intrigue (both in the university department Rosetta and Vincent work in, and on the larger local scale), and there's the mystery of the stone itself. There's also a few deaths, and two burgeoning romances. And it's all balanced really well and paced pretty perfectly across twelve short chapters.The author also doesn't shy away from realistic attitudes of the time period towards women, Jews, homosexuals and lesbians. While the name of the gentleman's club may be cheeky enough to fit an Oscar Wilde play, all of the characters who visit it know that one wrong word about the place, or one puritanical outsider moving to town, could result in bad news for everyone. Likewise, Rosetta is quite aware that as a woman, she was expected to leave academia after four years of study to settle down and find a husband. She's also aware that her family's status as European immigrants of Jewish descent causes some to look down on her. And yet these characters all rise above the limitations/expectations placed on them by society -- yes, even the "rich white boy" Vincent, whose father expected a different career path for him.It's a tightly told story, with characters and a world I'd love to see Faraday explore more.
