A Remarkable Work of Historical Fiction By Sean Lynch The history and emotion in this work of fiction fuse together to form a powerful book that takes on many dimensions as the plot develops, albeit the plot does develop slowly at first. The characters' bewilderment is palpable as they arrive in the New World and fight in a bloody civil war tearing apart a new nation that cares little for its recent immigrants' lives. But that's just the background to the engaging mystery young Harrison Cormack must solve, the murder of his beloved mother before the imposing presence of the Shot Tower. This landmark becomes a complex symbol of not only the oppression of developing industrial society, but also the power that men hold over each other's fates. All in all this book makes for a tantalizing read as soon as the second chapter. Especially amusing and interesting are the familial quips and tales of Irish culture and history. Shot Tower made me both smile and feel sorrowful. This is a wonderful read, and worthy of publication by a major press. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Rushton Having been born and raised across the river from Philadelphia, being of Irish descent and a lover of historical novels, I really enjoyed this tale. It was a bit difficult to get started, but once the narrator became comfortable with his story, it moved along nicely. I liked the connections between the murder he wanted to solve, his friendship with a black man - difficult considering the times- and the scenes of Philadelphia and New Jersey. I also enjoyed the side comments of his wife - actually wished she had more to say. Thanks for an enjoyable read!

It grabbed my attention from page one and kept it throughout. Not only is the story itself very good but the way it is intertwined with true events was done extremely well. The research is so accurate it continued to amaze me. I have lived in the Philadelphia area for most of my life and did not know these pieces of history. The storyline kept my fiction side interested and the true events fascinated my historical side. A great book! I hope to see and read more from Mr. Shefski!
