By Italophile Book Reviews Messina is a historical romance novel with a very unique setting: the aftermath of the destruction of the Sicilian city of Messina in 1908 from natural disasters. The author makes her protagonist doctors, Lucy and Giovanni, part of the relief effort. We are put on the ground with them to be eyewitnesses to the tragedy. This story is rich with Italian culture, romance, medicine, faith and some very moving melodramatic touches. In many ways Messina is an old-fashioned novel with the monumental setting, characters writ large, the force of history ever present, belief in God central to the characters' story, and a pure romance between a saintly man and a virginal woman. The author makes the most of these elements to create a ripping good yarn, to use old-fashioned language.Just so you know...The Messina (and Reggio) earthquake hit on December 18, 1908, at 5:20 a.m. and was quickly followed by multiple tsunamis. Fire then hit the ravaged city. Ninety percent of all buildings in Messina were destroyed. Because of the timing of the disaster, most of the city's 200,000 inhabitants were in bed when the quake hit, so they were buried in the ruble. The unprecedented disaster prompted an impressive international rescue and relief effort. Mass emigration of survivors occurred to other cities in Italy and abroad. New Messina was built over the ruble of the old city, making it several feet higher than the old city. The few buildings to survive the disaster are clear to see, sitting several feet lower than their surrounding buildings. Many of Messina's survivors refused to return to the reconstructed city. They did not want to live over the unmarked tombs of their compatriots who were never dug out.Dr. Lucille James is a young American surgeon who has a severe case of daddy-worship along with a chip on her shoulder and a dent in her self-esteem. Her relationship with Dr. Giovanni Castello, a driven, ascetic surgeon who is damaged from traumatic loss, is the central emotional story in Messina. However, the ravaged city's story is told too, with heartrending details that can make the reader feel like they were there on the ground. The total devastation surrounding our heroes creates a war-zone feeling, and their tented hospital quickly takes on a M.A.S.H. feeling with emotionally and physically exhausted personnel struggling to maintain their humanity and sanity. Giovanni quickly forms a tight bond with Lucy so he can protect her from a place where she insists on being. Their relationship grows into friendship and beyond."To have someone befriend and accept her made even the ragged mess tent seem a beautiful place."The narrative style is 3rd person limited, letting us in only one character's mind. But the point-of-view of the narration alternates generally between Lucy and Giovanni, but we also get to see into the minds of a few of the supporting cast. The characters grow though the events related, each blossoming into a better person by the end. There are some medical scenes that may be a bit much for the squeamish, but they are quick and the author does not revel in gore. By the mid-point of the novel, the medical story and the disaster of Messina takes a back seat to the growing love story. The romance language flows then."Every time he held her, she felt the same way, as though she had always been a part of him."Lucy and Giovanni are an attractive couple, each becoming a better person through their love for each other. Theirs is a chaste courtship, however, in this clean romance novel, since both of them embrace their religious convictions and the proscription of intimacy before marriage. Their faith is integral to the story, just as peoples' faith was generally much more integral to their lives in those days. One of the supporting cast is Lucy's father, Henry James. Yes, I know, it is an unfortunate choice to name him after the famous author. It distracted me throughout the tale, to be honest. Dr. Henry James is a bigot and a father who created a much too intimate relationship with his daughter. The author includes much about Italy in the story, and many Italian words and phases. To help the reader, she provides an Index with translations of the Italian used in the book. The peasants in Sicily at the time are shown, as well as the landed aristocracy, of which Giovanni is a member. The customs and traditions of the aristocracy, which are closely linked to Catholicism, are touched on in interesting detail.Messina is an old-fashioned romantic drama in the style of The Painted Veil. I received a review copy of the book. This is my honest review. Please visit my full and illustrated review at Italophile Book Reviews.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. where people are facing a catastrophe like no other By Nora A. Stlaurent This author whisks readers to the city of Messina, Italy 1908, where people are facing a catastrophe like no other. The main character Dr. Lucille James; is determined to help these people with her father’s blessings. Not only is Lucille a female surgeon facing horrendous conditions, trying to help people with almost non-existent medical supplies, but then there’s the opposition from the medical community about a female surgeon working period the end. She’d face this situation in America however opposition in Italy seemed worse. She was with her father at a conference when the earthquake hit. In a single night one hundred thousand people never woke up after the tsunami and fire hit Messina, Sicily. One Dr. tells the others, “I had the opportunity to observe Miss James’ work when I visited Boston last summer…This young lady has convinced me that women, on occasion, can make marvelous physicians.” The problem is they needed one now.Lucille’s dad pipes up, “My daughter graduated top of her class I’m proud of her.”She’s asked why a woman would want to be a surgeon. “I love this profession. Medicine runs in my family. And I seem to be good at it. My father is a Dr. My mom was a brilliant nurse…My older brother graduated with a medical degree three years ago.”She listened to their prejudices, “If you marry, I don’t know any man who would want his wife doing surgeries. It’s too ugly a job for someone like you! As for the Medical community it took years for them to finally admit that Florence Nightingale was right in her discovery of hospital sanitation.”“I sincerely believe that God has given me a gift and I must use it. Somehow he’ll find an avenue for he’s given me. As for marriage, I have no intentions of marrying unless I can find someone with whom I can work as a partner.”Physicians and staff are cold to Dr. James hoping she’d quit and head back to America. Among the many things that Dr. James did that annoyed her fellow Doctors and got under their skin was the fact she prayed for each and every patient before an operation. One doctor finally questioned her, “I need to know how you can still believe in God after all this?...Can’t you see that this God you keep talking to is just a fantasy?’This novel brings to mind all first responders do to save lives. We caught a glimpse of them hard at work when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, N.Y. on Sept.11th just to mention a few. This author doesn’t get extremely graphic in describing her work environment. But she does give you a peek at the situation the city was in. She leaves much to your imagination. I liked that.I rooted for this feisty young lady determined to beat the odds and do with her life what God has called her to do. This is a story of faith, hope and love with well-timed humor and a love story developing during tragic times. It’s a vivid account of an actual event that you won’t soon forget. The author includes an index of Italian phrases to help readers. This is not something I normally read but I was drawn in by this cutting edge American father/daughter team who challenged old ways of thinking. Bonus readers gets to know about Italy and some of the issues they faced in 1908Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. beautifully written! By R. H. This is the first book I've read by author, Liz Galvano. It is a beautifully written historical romance by this author. I loved the setting in Messina, Italy. This story is a wonderful read filled with historical facts and charmingly written fictional romance and love. My favorite characters are Giovanni and Lucia, of course. Both of these characters are doctors and yet very different temperaments. Dr. Giovanni was an Italian man of great medical knowledge, yet his faith in God had been tested and Giovanni had been found wanting as he chose to not trust God. Can he change his way and see how big God really is especially in working side by side with Dr. Lucia? Dr. Lucia was a cutting edge American doctor for the early 1900's, working in Italy when tragedy struck. She had a faith so big that all who came in contact with her could not help be blessed by her. She did have a strong will and was very vocal in her thoughts. As an American, she was challenged by the Italian's old way of life and how women were looked upon. Can she give in to some of the old ways and let people see God through her loving these wounded people, both emotionally and physically? I was thrilled to read this book as it had so much in it that worked the emotions, both laughing with the characters to crying as tragedy was great within its pages. A delightful read! I would definitely read another book by this author! I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.
