2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent History, Worthy Read By MedievalHistorian 13+ for violence.I enjoyed this classically written medieval tale. For a debut novel, I found it contained enough of the elements of a good story to make for a adventurous and enjoyable read. The history was impeccable, the research admirable, and the classical style was very similar to that of Haggard or Henty. The story spans many years, is partially complex, and, perhaps surprisingly, contains no romance and is far more straight-forward (rather than emotional) in the description of the characters. Aside from a few scenes containing a big more violence than I as a woman prefer to read (although Henty readers will find no objection), there was nothing questionable or objectionable in the story. The elements of salvation and Christianity were my favorite aspects of the tale. I also enjoyed the portrayal of very manly men - men who fought for honor and lived to noble characteristics such as obedience to authority and keeping one's word.I applaud Platt for his hard work and research on a fun and educational medieval tale. Recommended for homeschoolers, teenage boys, classical readers, and true medieval enthusiasts.

You’re engrossed in wondering what will happen next. The growth of the two main characters is enjoyable to watch. You’re immersed in an unusual place—the Middle East of the Middle Ages. And not only that, you learn things from this story … whether it’s how battles were fought (I was amazed by the sharp detail of the author’s battle plans), customs of cultures far removed from you, or the inspiring story of Wycliff and the Lollards. It contained a wonderful message of true courage at its heart, and it proved its message in a very clear yet entertaining way. The youth of the author does show at times (I read an earlier version of this story, so I cannot comment on the improvements that were made since), but young teenage boys especially will enjoy a story told from their point of view. I applaud the author! (And isn’t that a gripping cover?)
