Meg Files' new novel is set in Michigan in the early 60s, when the worst thing a girl could do was get herself "in trouble," when domestic violence remained hidden in silent basements. It tells the stories of Dulcie White, a bright, confused college girl distracted by sexual discoveries and the power of her boyfriend's neediness, and track star Lonnie Saxbe, who is caught up in his own confusions and compulsions. The Third Law of Motion offers an intimate look at the subtleties and the complexities of the dynamics between a battered wife and a violent husband, where nothing is so simple as a fist punched through a wall.

She is wickedly accurate in her portrayals of the complexity of human nature and the consequences of both action and inaction. Dulcie is a typical privileged college student, drifting through life with a naivete that is as understandable as it is tragic. This novel tells two coming-of-age stories: Dulcie's, a Tchaikovsky-loving midwestern girl of the 60's who becomes a young woman caught in a trap of her own passivity; and Lonnie's, the product of a damaged childhood who grows into a damaged man, haunted by demons beyond his control. It's a page-turner, a pitch-perfect tome of a time when college girls had curfews and went to dances and made mistakes. I wanted to shake her, stop her, lecture her before it was too late, and then I wanted to save her. What remains at the end of this inspiring story is the knowledge that one can ultimately choose to stop punishing oneself and can find sustainable, if not complete, redemption. As Dulcie says, "And so I made a current and I made a boat and I carried us away".

This is part of the story you won't read many other places. The title, The Third Law of Motion, sent me to look up what that law is since I didn't remember it. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Wow! Anticipation!I looked forward to seeing just how Ms. Files' characters would act - what would they do - what actions one would take, then what reactions that would cause in the others, particularly after I read the book's description. I started reading this book and just kept going. The story is perfectly told about that time. I "knew" Dulcie and even Lonnie for that matter. These things happened to so many kids. No one talked about it and those caught up in the maelstrom of such marriages lived in them in as much secrecy as possible.I missed getting things done while I read this book, turning each page, wondering what would happen - what would be the final action/reaction. Wanting to know how it ended and afraid of what I'd find on the last pages. Great read.

The first is the writing, which captures one of the two points of view with lyrical prose, the other with visceral prose, the combination drawing the reader deeper and deeper inside two troubled lives and the damaged marriage that results. The second way the book works is by inverse plotting, whereby train wrecks that the reader sees coming from miles away are caused by hidden flaws in the parallel tracks themselves, flaws that are only reveled as the traversed mileage stretches back to the initial horizon.Thirdly, the book forces you to keep reading, even as you shake your head and cry. You hope that there can be redemption, happiness, and freedom, so you have no choice but to keep going, if only to get yourslelf out of the spell that Files has cast.
