It's 1796, and traveling weaver Will Rees is visiting Salem, Massachusetts. He's in town to buy a luxurious gift for his pregnant wife, a few yards of well-made fabric from the traders at the famed Salem harbor. While traveling through Salem, however, Rees comes upon a funeral procession for the deceased Mrs. Antiss Boothe. When Rees happens upon Twig, a friend who fought alongside him in the war, he learns that Mrs. Boothe had been very ill, and her death had not come as a surprise. But the next morning, the town is abuzz with the news that Mr. Boothe has also died―and this time it is clearly murder. When the woman that Twig loves falls under suspicion, Twig persuades Rees to stay in Salem, despite the family waiting for him back home in Maine, and help solve the murder.

Rees is quickly pulled into the murky politics of both Salem and the Boothe family, who have long been involved in the robust shipping and trading industry on the Salem harbor. Everyone Rees meets seems to be keeping some kind of secret, but could any of them actually have committed murder?

Will Rees returns in Death in Salem, the next delightful historical mystery from MB/MWA First Novel Competition winner Eleanor Kuhns.

Hoyos It is 1796 and Will Rees, a traveling weaver, is in Salem, Massachusetts; he is buying cloth for his pregnant wife, Lydia. Rees has a chance encounter with a fellow war veteran, Stephen "Twig" Eaton, who is a mortician. At Twig's request, Will attends the wake for the wife of a wealthy maritime merchant, Jacob Boothe. The next morning, while traveling home in his buggy, Rees is halted by a frantic Twig who informs him that Jacob has been murdered. The tragedy has been compounded by the arrest of Twig's fiancée, Xenobia, a slave of Jamaican descent. While searching for the true killer, Rees discovers that the Boothe family has many dark secrets--secrets that will cause more deaths in Salem. An extremely dysfunctional family is the center of Eleanor Kuhn's latest Will Rees novel, "Death in Salem" [following "Cradle to Grave" (Cradle to Grave (Will Rees Mysteries)) and "Death of a Dyer" (Death of a Dyer (Will Rees Mysteries))]. Before her death, Anstiss Booth, the matriarch of the Boothe family, was kept in seclusion, her body wracked with pain; her husband, Jacob, denied her the opium she needed. The children are spoiled. Peggy, the youngest daughter, wishes she were a man so she could run the family business. Her brother, William, is power hungry. The other son, Michael, a playboy, wants to be an actor. The oldest daughter, Betsy, wishes only to marry a wealthy gentleman, but too many family scandals may prevent this. Also, it is rumored that Jacob Boothe was having an affair. Salem is a strange city rich with history. Superstition and suspicion still reign more than one-hundred years after the infamous witch trials. Taverns have names such as Moon and Stars and Witch's Cauldron. There is a bordello named The Black Cat. A myriad of dark tunnels lie beneath the city. These tunnels connect homes with warehouses, taverns and bordellos; they aid with smuggling and other illicit activities, including adulterous trysts. Rees's life is jeopardized when he pursues a murder suspect into the tunnels. There is a lot of tension whenever Rees travels beneath the city. Rees's life, it appears, is in constant danger as long as he searches for an elusive killer. To make matters worse, his pregnant wife, Lydia, comes to Salem to aid him with his investigation. She serves as his sounding board. I constantly feared for the safety of her and her baby. In the last novel, "Cradle to Grave," Rees and Lydia adopted five orphans. Rees has a fourteen-year-old son, David, from a previous marriage; David resents his father adopting more children. Father and son don't speak. It appears that Rees is in Salem partially to get a break from a family that has become overwhelming. Furthermore, his sister, Caroline, is still causing grief for him. Indeed, Rees encounters family problems and more family problems. Rees can't escape them, whether they are his own or those of another. He even meets a little girl, Annie, who wishes to leave her mom, One-Eye Mary, who is the madam at The Black Cat. Annie wants to live in the Shaker community where Lydia once lived before marrying Rees. Also, Rees gives advice to a young lad, Billy Baldwin, the same age as David, who dreams of working on a merchant ship. Rees has a kind, generous heart. He makes an admirable detective. The mystery in "Death in Salem" is a complex one. I didn't know the identity of Jacob Boothe's killer until nearly the very end. Neither did Rees. I almost felt as though he was adlibbing when he had gathered all the many suspects together, a la Lieutenant Columbo, and announced the killer at the end of a lengthy dialogue. A complex mystery, coupled with a large assortment of strange characters (one of which is the extremely effeminate, foppish Deputy Sheriff Swett), a creepy setting, gruesome murders, and a lot of emotional drama, makes this novel a must read for fans of historical whodunits. I love stepping back in time with best-selling author Eleanor Kuhns. I can't wait to read the next novel and hope Rees spends more time with his brood of adorable children.

Historical Fiction and Murder Mystery Fans Will Enjoy DEATH IN SALEM By Silver's Reviews Traveling through Salem on his way home, Will Rees encounters an old friend and becomes involved in a murder investigation at the request of his friend, Twig.Rees wonders how he became involved in this investigation when all he wanted was to go home and see his wife, Lydia. Could he bring her here to help?I enjoyed the time period DEATH IN SALEM was set in but am glad I didn't live then. Horse and buggies, no phones, women who had to stay home, women who were not allowed to be educated, some women who couldn't even read. What a time to be a man, right?Being a man meant being a sailor or a merchant in this town. And being a wealthy merchant in this case was bad for Jacob Boothe. His wealth may have been what got him murdered. But, who was the murderer of not one but now two people and then a third? Could Will figure it out or is his investigation putting him in danger. It took a few pages to become part of the story, but I enjoyed DEATH IN SALEM. I liked the characters and the storyline. The characters perfectly portrayed the era. The storyline kept me guessing until the end. The wrap up and solving of the murder was unique. The storyline definitely held my interest, and I am going try some of Ms Kuhn's other books. Murder and mishaps prevailed along with authentic characters who got the job done.DEATH IN SALEM is a book historical fiction and murder fans do not want to miss. 4/5This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation in return for an honest review.

Death in Salem is the first book in the series that I have read. It definitely will not be the last.As a Canadian, I did not learn American history in school. Most of the things that I know I learned by reading books. Reading a delightful novel is the best way to learn history in my opinion! I always enjoy reading books in historical settings.I've been to Salem before and was very intrigued by the witchcraft history. Eleanor Kuhns does a fabulous job of bringing this dark and fascinating period in history to lift. Will Rees is visiting Salem in order to buy a gift for his wife. He is caught up in a murder involving the Boothe family as his old friend Twig's girlfriend is under suspicion.I love the authenticity author Kuhns brings to Death in Salem. She portrays the darkness of Salem vividly. Her characters really bring Salem in the late 1700s to life. I enjoyed the twists in the plot and the mood of the novel.Great historical mystery! Loved learning more about this period. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
