Beautiful Star of Bethlehem: A Christmas Novella, by Lori Copeland

Review “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem caught me totally unprepared. I expected a sweet Christmas story, but instead discovered a poignant, tender love story that evolved into something deeper and richer than I’d anticipated. While Copeland’s story has its sad moments, the beauty of family and depth of love portrayed is not to be missed.”   Miralee Ferrell Bestselling author of Blowing on Dandelions & more“Lori Copeland has long been one of my all-time favorite authors. Her ability to weave a heart-tugging tale shines in Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, a memorable story of love lost, love renewed. . .and love everlasting.”   Carol Cox, author of Practically Christmas, A Woman’s Place, and Truth Be Told“Lori Copeland’s Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is a Christmas book I will never forget. From the stunning—and surprising—opening to the lovely and perfect ending, I fell into the tale and didn’t want to leave the friends I made there.”   -Kathleen Y’Barbo, bestselling author of Firefly Summer and The Secret Lives of Will Tucker series“Prepare to be entertained and inspired as you travel on this heartfelt Christmas journey!” -Anita Higman, bestselling authorThis Christmas novella costs a light on and even adds levity to the confusing life of someone with a traumatic brain injury. There are a number of heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes, making this perfect for the holiday season. A poignant reminder that happiness is a state of mind, not people, materials or circumstances. (Leslie L. McKee RT Book Reviews 2015-10-01)While this story may not have the typical feel-good scenarios of other Christmas stories, it is sure to warm your heart and increase your gratitude for the aspects of life that most others take for granted. Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is a Tough Read By Blessings N' Bloggings Jack and Arlene are new grandparents and on their way to meet their first grandchild. They have built a great Christian-based life together and in their later years are enjoy the fruits of the labor. When I first began Lori Copeland's Beautiful Star of Bethlehem I loved Jack and Arlene Santana and thought that this was going to be a great book, however by the time I finished it I had change my opinion. The book revolves around Arlene after she and Jack were involved in a horrific accident on their way to meet Ella Parker Santana, their first grandchild. Arlene's story continues as she enters a rehabilitation home for people with traumatic brain injuries and this is where the rest of the story begins. I understand that Lori was writing a book about what it is like for someone or for families who suffer with a family member that has this type of injury however, I found the book difficult to read. With a brain injury like that suffered by Arlene occurs they remember and forget things at random so it was very difficult for you as a reader to follow. There seemed to be a need for an anchoring story line to help you stay on track, for instance she would remember her sons sometimes and even remember personality traits of them and two chapters later she would have no memory of them at all. I found myself having to look back to make sure I had not forgotten or missed something. So for this reason I can only give the book 3 stars. This book was given to me by NetGalley for my honest opinion. The publisher is Barbour Publishing.

By lighthouse88 What an exceptionally touching tale so relevant to the current issues of loving and caring for people with memory issues. The main female character named Arlene has been married for years and is now on the way to meet her first grandchild with her husband. Suddenly life takes a jolting, heart-ripping twist and life for Arlene and her family is forever altered.Throughout the novella, Arlene has moments where she remembers events, people and her faith though sometimes the thoughts fade as quickly as they come. Now, her sons and their families are under tremendous stress from grief and long term care for their mom. Through the fuzzy moments come words of wisdom, love and care of a mother, friend and grandmother when crisis come to her attention.Depending on your life experiences, the hope of this novella might really touch your heart deeply, and like me it might even remind you that through all of life God makes beauty from ashes. Like the characters we might go through a myriad of emotions so intense we feel stress that we just cannot find a way to express. However, at some point, we will see God’s hand has been with us throughout the whole season we just walked through. When we come out, we aren’t the same people who went into the season of hardship, heartache or broken dreams, but our walk with the Lord will be so different, more real perhaps.Stars shine brightest against a black background; God shines brightest and draws us near when we look to Him in the backdrop of our trails. Thank you Lori for writing a very heartfelt story one and all need to read; they’ll never forget it that’s for sure!

The cover is gorgeous and I love the flaps, the rough-cut page edges, and the tree border illustrations at the bottom of the pages. The story itself was not at all what I expected. It is a narrative about Arlene Santana who has suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as the loss of her husband in the same accident. For her each day is a new experience because she doesn’t remember the previous one. She still has memories of her life before the injury but usually doesn’t remember the visits from her sons. As the years go by, one Christmas after another, Arlene yearns to go home she misses. I liked the fact that although Arlene had such memory loss, she never forgot who she was and never lost her love for her family. As is usual in Copeland’s books, it is beautifully and skillfully written. I have to admit though, much of this book depressed me. Yes, there were some quite humorous moments and the ending was encouraging. It was revealing to see the other side of memory loss and the frustration for the one experiencing it. The problem was not the book but perhaps my own frame of mind. I have seen too many friends and relatives with loved ones who suffered from dementia and recently watched as a friend and her husband experienced his difficult and losing battle with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. I feel sure that the author has a special purpose for this book and I sincerely hope that it reaches those whose lives will be touched by it.This book was provided for review by Barbour Publishing.
