From the Back Cover Pinkerton detective Maggie Cartwright has no intention of walking down the aisle. . . .   But her current case has Maggie posing as a mail-order bride for widower Garrett Thomas, the prime suspect in the Whistle-Stop Bandit robbery. No sooner does Maggie arrive in Arizona Territory when she’s confronted by his meddlesome aunt who insists the two set an early wedding date. With the clock ticking, Maggie sets to work to uncover the truth. Maggie is nothing like the woman widower Garrett expected from her letters. But he’s immediately smitten with the blue-eyed beauty and feels the need to protect her, not only from his aunt’s critical eye, but also from the ugliness of his past. As the day of the wedding draws near, Maggie begins to panic. The investigation may be progressing, but the real problem is that the more she gets to know Garrett and his two charming children, the harder it is to keep up the deception. Can a man as kind and gentle as Garrett really be the Whistle-Stop Bandit? Or has the possibility of a home, family, and a handsome husband blinded Maggie from seeing the truth?

Her husband-to-be is the number one suspect in a train robbery that happened two years ago. The Pinkerton Agency never gives up on a case and has been working this case for two years. Now, with Maggie on the scene, they hope to finally wrap this one up. Maggie has created a fictional past in her letters to Garrett Thomas during their previous months of correspondence. She has arrived in the Arizona Territory under the pretense of marrying Garrett, but what she is really been assigned to do is learn where he has hidden the money from the train robbery and who is partner in crime is.She moves in with the family, searches the house and begins taking care of Garrett’s two young children. As time progresses, she finds no evidence of the money anywhere and begins to care for the children and Garrett. She tells herself to stay on task, to not get emotionally involved and finish her assignment, but the wedding date looms closer and closer. She finally stumbles onto a clue, but will it be enough to prove who the criminal is to solve the case? After reading the first book in the series and finding it just so-so, I wanted to give the series a second chance before writing it off. I’m glad I did. I enjoyed this second book in the series much more. I thought the story flowed well with a good plot, the characters were likeable and the faith of Maggie very evident. I loved the character of Aunt Hetty! The mystery portion of the story was not much of a challenge, but the journey to discover the answers was entertaining. I’m now looking forward to book three in the series to see what interesting situation the next Pinkerton lady detective finds herself in and how she will solve the case.

By Rebecca Maney Pinkerton detective Maggie Cartwright has gotten herself into a conundrum of a situation when she poses as a mail-order bride for widower Garrett Thompson; he appears to be . . . . . . exactly what he appears to be; a loving father, a successful businessman, and a kind, compassionate future-husband who is looking forward to his wedding . . . to Maggie. Where is the rich, vicious bank robber, murderer, that the agency has sent her to expose?Garrett Thompson cannot believe his good fortune; a second chance at love. He never expected his mail-order bride to completely capture his heart, much less the hearts of his two children. How could such a beautiful, intelligent, albeit adventurous young woman like Maggie want to marry a simple, war-scarred man like himself? Why even his grumpy old aunt has taken to the young lady, miraculously recovering from her various aches and pains to enthusiastically plan their wedding.Just when it seems that Maggie's time has run out, new evidence forces her to make the most difficult decision of her life. Will Garrett ever forgive her? And how can she forgive herself for ruining the one person whom she has grown to love the most? This thrilling escapade by Margaret Brownley will have her readers laughing out loud, shedding a few tears and wanting to read "Undercover Bride" all over again!

The characters stand alone and the reader does not feel that she is missing something.Maggie Cartwright, aka Maggie Taylor is Garrett Thomas' mail order bride, but in reality, Maggie is a Pinkerton agent out to prove that Garrett was the Whistle-Stop Bandit. Once Maggie meets Garrett, she begins to doubt that Garrett actually WAS the Bandit. Still it's her job to find the evidence to prove the charges one way or the other. In the meantime, Maggie falls in love with Garrett's two children, and then falls in love with Garrett himself. While Margaret Brownley did follow the accepted romance formula, she did it in a most entertaining way. Her books are always marked with humor and light-heartedness and this one is no different.Maggie has had to take on many roles in her job as a Pinkerton, but she's never really learned the homemaking arts--especially the essentials like cooking, so she hides her discrepancies as best as she can. She uses a cookbook but she doesn't let anyone else know about it by hiding it after she uses it.I have loved every one of Margaret Brownley's books that I've read. I recommend this one to anyone who likes light-hearted historical romance. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a Pinkerton Agent who'll find all your secrets. My thanks to Barbour Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.
