I was quickly captivated by Cessarina and her plight--- bound by obligation to the traditions of her mother's faithful, sometimes morbid, devotion to a false idol and subsequent downward spiral into darkness-- leading to the difficult decision to abandon all she knows and leave a situation in which she merely exists in the shadow of her mother's psychosis. Her brave journey leads to many unpredictable choices, love and happiness found and lost. It is a dark, but worthy read which inspires moments of reflection and contemplation of our own free will and the consequences of the choices we made, or didn't. The last few chapters leave you guessing, hoping, till the end. Loved the last sentence. KH

Amy Tan Meets Italian Immigrants with Mother Son Relationships By Rachel Barnard “…all of my lies might unravel all the way back to Italy.” (Kindle Location 3427).Cessarina had known wealth of family and joy before her family had been cursed with the evil eye. Her mother thought that praying to the family skull, Ambrogio, could help lift the curse and she went mad with her purpose, abandoning both Cessarina and her father and retreating into her own mind. Cessarina longed for a normal mother. The only way to fix her situation was to get out of it, but does she believe Ambrogio has the power to help her in a new world with new problems? The language Tonya Fraser uses at times is very beautiful, “My fate seemed to be stitched into my soul as tightly as the lacework I toiled over. I was able to feel it, heavy in the air.” (Kindle Locations 3670-3671).Cessarina is able to think about the bad choices she made, and although she at first attributes them to bad luck and Ambriogio’s lack of help, she is finally able to realize that at times she is at fault for her fate with her actions and lies and decisions.Fraser starts many small story lines but doesn’t follow all of them through, leaving the reader without finality with some characters. The biggest question to me was what happened to Cessarina’s parents? The part where Cessarina steals something didn’t go anywhere like I thought it would. It provided some tension when you thought she would be caught and her world would spiral further down, but nothing came of it and I felt that this part was unresolved. This was a very well written book with an intriguing premise. It was a fascinating story about a young girl who takes her life into her own hands, even as she makes some decisions on a whim. Her story is that of an Italian immigrant trying to make her way in America with bad luck hanging just over her shoulder. Halfway through we switch to the stories of her sons and their tragic lives. The whole book is one long tragedy and though it is hard to sit through so much suffering, it is also something unfamiliar to most American readers and therefore quite eye-opening in the description of the environment Cessarina and her boys lived in as poverty-stricken individuals in 1930’s New Haven.

Dark and Compelling By Sheri J Kennedy This was billed to be a story of Redemption.I teetered on the brink of assigning 3 rather than 4 stars to this book but it was only because I feel it was misrepresented in the blurb, so my expectation was not met for a story that ‘demonstrates the healing power of redemption.’ But the writing is strong enough and the story compelling enough that it deserves 4 stars. The story is about redemption in one sense, but it’s on a ‘Turn or Burn’ basis and the heroine seems to seek redemption as a means to escape negative things. It’s fear based. Also the story follows the time when its heroine is choosing darkness and stops when we might have seen healing but it’s only hinted at not assured or ‘demonstrated.’ As such, it’s a very dark tale. But it is a good one!I was captivated by Cessarina and her story right away and curiosity about her fate drove me forward to read the whole book without wavering. I read several books at a time usually, but this remained my go-to from start to finish. Her world fascinated me and I clung to it even when it became a horror story. I kept looking for moments of joy, but even those were cloaked in darkness, as is fitting for this tale to be true to itself.I found it a little off-putting to be switched to the point of view of Cessarina’s son part way through the book, but his story is also intriguing and soon weaves well with the continuation of her own. The tandem tale brings much more power to the conclusion so is well conceived.Since I’m a writer, I’m always picky about finer points, so here’s one: I found the voice of Allessandro to be almost identical to his mother’s. This was especially odd when he was first introduced as a young boy. Also there were times I wished I could see more detail of where they were or why he or Cessarina felt as they did. I wanted to be more in the moment with them instead of having an overview. But the storyline was compelling enough for these factors to drop into the background quickly and keep me reading. There is one plot issue I just can’t leave unmentioned. I was confused why a boy with a mother and grandparents would be allowed into an orphanage, especially since this was 1933 during the depression when poverty was extremely common. People often squeezed into one room together, so I didn’t understand why he couldn’t stay with his mother when quarters got smaller. And related to this, the reason the grandparents pushed Cessarina out was reasonably motivated in the story, but I can’t imagine Italian grandparents pushing out or even letting someone else take their firstborn grandson and heir away from them. That needed very serious motivation that I didn’t find in the story. Again, however, I was able to let it go and the story of the time at the orphanage kept me reading. The concrete imagery of good and evil, and activity ‘beyond the veil,’ was vivid and well integrated into the inner journeys of the two main characters. I personally found it very creepy and was tempted to quit reading at times, but that attests to it being well-crafted. It reminded me of the strange and sinister characters that appear in the background of Mel Gibson’s, The Passion of the Christ. This aspect of Catholicism has always been eerie to me, and this book explores it well.As a comment on the theme, I didn’t consider Cessarina to be redeemed since her final action that changed the focus of her beliefs seemed motivated from the same choices of self-preservation and selfish ambition as her prior actions. In my personal view, true redemption comes when one learns to reach for and share the bounty of love rather than acting in fear of consequence or desperation for rescue from bad situations. The fact the story solicited this comment shows it did get me thinking about the choices and personal journeys of the characters, so in that sense it achieved what the author presented it would by challenging my understanding of what or who commands my soul.
