Mr. Confer has created a world shrouded in mystery, ripe with opportunities for the characters who inhabit it to seek their fame and fortune through heroic deeds. The hero in question we follow is Ansgar Tapio, a skilled huntsman who is uncannily gifted with his trusty rifle and has a nose for danger. The world feels expansive, as if one could walk in any direction to find a new adventure or creature every day. Exotic fauna make big appearances, their shapes familiar but exotic. I find it exciting when known creatures are given flavor and life within the context of a new world I'm discovering. Strange names flow familiar from the tongues of those who live in Magna Terra, immersing the reader with it's vernacular and history. The titular storm is painted as an ever looming presence, an atmospheric portent of hidden danger. The set pieces are reminiscent of Dungeons and Dragons, Conan the Barbarian and Land of the Lost. Ansgar's fear and determination is visceral, pushing the reader forward to the next page to find out what happens next. There are a few weak points in Mr. Confer's writing, mainly in the character of Ansgar. The Finnish frontiersman feels a bit two dimensional as we have little background on him. However, seeing as this is a short story, it is a flaw easily overlooked as Mr. Confer's other story (The Hunter from the Red Hills) has plenty of backstory for anyone craving to know more about Ansgar and Magna Terra. The author's strength lies in his descriptive prowess and extensive knowledge in what Ansgar proves himself to be extremely adept at.I highly recommend this story to all and look forward to exploring more of this world alongside Ansgar. Did I mention there are dinosaurs?
