Girl with Parasol is a suspenseful novel about looting of Jewish-owned artworks by the Nazis during World War II. These crimes recently hit the headlines with the discovery of an art cache in Munich in 2013, and the release of George Clooney's film "The Monuments Men" in 2014. "Girl with Parasol" is the name of a portrait painted by Monet in 1905. It shows a girl with a white parasol standing on a bridge above a lily pond. The model was the daughter of Monet's art dealer, Tania Wertheimer. When the Germans invade France in 1940, Tania's daughter Corinne keeps the painting hidden. The Nazis expropriate the family gallery and confiscate the stock. Corinne turns for help to her friend Rose, who is a curator at the Musée du Jeu de Paume. The Nazis use the Jeu de Paume as a transit point for artworks looted from the Jews. Rose is the sole French curator allowed to remain. She spies on the Germans and risks her life to pass details of mass-scale looting to the Resistance. In 1941, Corinne meets Thomas, a German diplomat. Thomas is handsome, entertaining, and openly sceptical of the Nazis. At first she resists his advances, but they begin an affair, and start to fall in love. And then Foreign Minister Ribbentrop announces he wants a Monet portrait, word gets out that Corinne owns "Girl with Parasol", and Thomas is pressured to get hold of the painting. Trapped, desperate and panicking, he triggers a chain of events that will lead to disaster.

Corinne works in a gallery for her uncle, and admires Girl With Parasol, a painting by Monet of her mother, Tania, that she keeps in the apartment. Rose works in the Jau de Paume gallery in Paris, and Hanna works for the ministry, in Berlin. Over the next five years, nothing could have prepared them for what they had to face. Corinne's husband is imprisoned in Germany, she becomes involved with a German who betrays her. Rose fights to retain works of art in Paris, and even sells fakes to the Germans. Hanna, in Berlin, observes the theft of art works by the top Nazis, and worries about her husband fighting in the German army at the front. Gradually, the underbelly of the Nazis regime is explored. No one is exempt. Corruption operates at every level and everyone is affected. Black and white judgements do not apply in this context. To stay a good person you need some degree of normal context. Who knows how anyone would behave in the evil atmosphere of Nazis control? It's easy from the outside, try being right in at the centre, and see just how sound the moral judgements you make. This is one of the strengths of Girl With Parasol - it operates at many levels. Exciting dramatic narrative, where you really are absorbed and interested in the characters' fates. Accurate historical detail - the sexual relationship formed by Hanna with a Russian officer in order to survive in Berlin. Just how far are you prepared to go, morally, to protect works of art? Is art more or less important than life? The writing keeps you involved to the very end because you want to learn the fates of the characters. When you finish the book you put it down, let the emotion drain, and maybe feel lucky that you were born a bit later than Corinne, Rose and Hanna - three wonderful, brave women.

A riveting read that clearly has been carefully researched, both in terms of the Parisian art world and how the German occupiers functioned in and manipulated this artistic milieu to abscond with thousands of paintings. This intelligent story is skillfully nuanced and the character development avoids the stereotypes often found in works dealing with the period. Highly recommended!

The reader is launched into Nazi-occupied Paris. As the plot develops so does the level of fear, the atmosphere thickens with complications and advanced levels of dread. The characters are very attractive and intriguingly, inevitably compromised by their circumstances. There's a lot to be learned as well.Bravo Mrs. Leroy!
