7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Long and drawn out By Amazon Customer This book was slow. Seems like the 3 books currently in series could've been condensed to 2 books easily. The journal entries/lyrics/whatever that is in italics is very distracting in pretty irritating- used WAY to often. I am not sure if I will give the next book a shot or not and certainly hope that's the last book of series. It's becoming to long and drawn out.

By Lynn I'm going to be honest and say that I'm a tad bit annoyed with the fact that nothing much really happened in this book. It felt to me like a filler book when for some reason I thought it was the final in the series, at this point I feel like the plot is dragging. I hope that the next one that comes out later this spring will be the continuation of this story otherwise I just might save my money and give up on these two...

Every book I think I love her more By Christy Baldwin BBU I’ve raved about this series so much because of how much much lighter (in a way) and different it is than her other series. Even though it still has some mystery and emotional times, it still has so many moments that make me smile. And that reason is still Lyric. Every book I think I love her more. I love her upbeat and optimistic outlook. She is exactly what Ayden needs. Especially right now.Ayden is going through a rough time. Looking for this sister, looking for answers about his past. It’s a lot to handle. Therapy isn’t working as well as they’d hope and he still can’t remember much. Plus, ‘they’ are still after him. Someone is still out there watching him. He’s finding it hard to cope.Ayden’s life is falling apart in one way, but in another way, it’s coming together completely. He has Lyric. Lyric Scott, his best friend and girlfriend. Even though he feels like he doesn’t deserve her, he has her completely. He has her friendship, which means everything to him, but he’s also ready. Ready to try to take things a little farther. Adyen makes huge strides in this installment.Lyric is still the best character Jessica has written. She is so fun and lovable. She’s caring, giving and has the best attitude. She is always there for her Shy Boy. She is everything Ayden needs in a girlfriend and friend and always lets him know that he is good enough for her. I also love the relationship she has with her parents. There was a certain scene or two that had me laughing with Micha… ;)
Honestly, I thought Awakening You was going to be the final book in this series so I was a little surprised when things didn’t start to wrap up in the end. I think this could have been a bit longer and concluded, but who am I to complain there is going to be more Lyric and Ayden?

About the Author Dr. John Owen (1616-1683), theologian, was born of Puritan parents at Stadham in Oxfordshire in 1616. At twelve years of age he was admitted at Queen's College, Oxford, where he took his B.A. degree in 1632 and M.A. in 1635. During these years he worked with such diligence that he allowed himself but four hours sleep a night, and damaged his health by this excessive labour. In 1637 he was driven from Oxford by his refusal to comply with the requirements of Laud's new statutes. Having taken orders shortly before, he became chaplain and tutor in the family of Sir Robert Dormer of Ascot in Oxfordshire. At the outbreak of the civil troubles he adopted Parliamentary principles, and thus lost both his place and the prospects of succeeding to his uncle's fortune. For a while he lived in Charterhouse Yard, in great unsettlement of mind on religious questions, which was removed at length by a sermon which he accidently heard at St Michael's in Wood Street.

Excellent for People Mature in their Christian Walk By Mona Windmueller I've found this book to be valuable in trying to understand why and how Christian people can do bad things. It speaks to all who call themselves Christians because we all have our issues with sin until we die, leave this earth, and are given a new body. The book can be somewhat difficult to understand at times because it was first published in 1656. However; there is much wisdom to digest and contemplate, and for that reason it has been a slow read for me during my devotional time. When I first heard about the book, from my son, I thought how can the author, who at the time of its writing in the 17th century was the Dean of Christ Church and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, relate to the struggles Christians are having in the 21st century? I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Christian walk through the ages tends to be the same -- the times, issues, places, names and faces are what change. I've heard that many pastors read this book to make sure that their Christian walk is on track, to ensure spiritual growth, and not hinder the free flow of the Holy Spirit in their ministries. I need the same for the ministry that the Lord has given me in His Will.

Resolve to kill sin in your life By Linda Gabriel The Mortification of Sin, published in book form in 1656, originated as a series of sermons Owen preached in Oxford. Owen is not the easiest to read, but if you're comfortable reading the King James Version, you should be able to manage Owen just fine. If the language proves to be a challenge, a slightly modernized (but unabridged) version of this book has been published under the title Overcoming Sin and Temptation, which also includes two companion works, Of Temptation (1658) and Of Indwelling Sin in Believers (1667).As you read the book, you should be aware that Owen uses a few terms for sin that we may be unaccustomed to. When he uses the word "lust," he uses it in the Biblical sense to mean any natural, sinful desire (not necessarily sex-related, as we are used to thinking of it). He also uses the term "distemper," which typically refers to an illness or disease, but in this case it refers to spiritual illness, ie. sin. Of course, like all good Puritan theologians, Owen makes good use of the Scriptures and includes many references throughout the book to support his statements.In his introduction to the book, J. I. Packer remarks that many of today's readers will find it difficult to relate to and to take to heart what Owen has to say for four reasons. He believes that today's churches don't emphasize enough: 1) God's holiness, 2) The significance of motivating desires within, 3) the need for self-scrutiny, and 4) the life-changing power of God. Owen believes that mortifying sin - putting sin to death - is essential to the life and spiritual health of every believer. He uses Romans 8:13 as his key verse: "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live" (New King James). In this verse we see the what, who, why, how, and condition of mortifying sin. Owen says, "The vigor, power, and comfort of our spiritual life depend on the mortification of the deeds of the flesh," and he goes on to define mortification of sin, explaining the duty and importance of this, followed by the dangers of neglecting this duty, and finally offers some instruction and directions for specifically addressing sin in one's life.Owen explains what it means to mortify sin and why it's important:"Indwelling sin is compared to a person, a living person, called the old man, with his faculties and properties, his wisdom, craft, subtlety, strength; this must be killed, put to death, mortified, that is, have its power, life, vigour and strength to produce its effects, taken away by the Spirit."While it's true that a believer has been forgiven of his sins, the price having been paid and peace with God obtained by Christ, the fact is that we still reside in this life in a "body of death" from which we will not be delivered until the end of life here on earth."Now, though doubtless there may be attained by the Spirit and grace of Christ, a wonderful success and eminency of victory against any sin, so that a man may have almost constant triumph over it; yet an utter killing and destruction of it, that it should not be, is not in this life to be expected...Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin, or it will be killing you. Your being dead with Christ virtually, your being quickened (alive) with him, will not excuse you from this work."Owen puts forth two principles that govern the process of the mortifying of sin. First, he clarifies that only true believers in Christ can begin to mortify sin. If a person is an unbeliever, repentance and conversion must come first, for the work of putting sin to death can only be done with the help of the Holy Spirit, and "how shall he mortify sin who has not the Spirit?" Owen remarks.Secondly, Owen observes that "without sincerity and diligence in the universality of obedience, there is no mortification of any one perplexing lust to be obtained." In other words, we don't get to just pick and choose certain sins to address simply because they are inconvenient, bothersome or uncomfortable to us, while neglecting other sins. "Hatred of sin as sin, not only as galling or disquieting; a sense of the love of Christ in the cross; lie at the bottom of all true spiritual mortification."Owen goes on to offer practical ways of dealing with sin in one's life. He states that mortifying a specific sin involves three things:1) Habitual weakening of it; 2) Constant fight and contending against sin; and 3) Success in weakening indwelling sin.Owen offers a few danger signs that indicate that serious attention and action need to be taken. One of these signs is inveterateness - something you have been allowing and tolerating for a long time. The conscience becomes seared by regularly ignoring a particular sin:"When a lust hath lain long in the heart, corrupting, festering, cankering, it brings the soul to a woeful condition...it grows familiar to the mind and conscience, that they do not startle at it as a strange thing...Indwelling distemper grows restive an d stubborn by continuance in ease and quiet... As it never dies of itself, so if it be not daily killed, it will always gather strength."Another bad sign is when attempts are made to excuse, justify, or rationalize away sin. When we don't consider the seriousness of sin, but just say to ourselves, "It's just a little thing," and when a certain sin is frequently successful this enables and strengthens it. If sin is consented to, even if only inwardly and not actually acted upon, it has been successful. There may be a number of self-centered reasons that a person may choose not to act on a sinful thought or idea, such as the inconvenience of doing so or the possible negative consequences. But being negligent and careless regarding sin is, practically-speaking, the same as being willing to accept and tolerate it. This is also dangerous.Owen explains, "Mortification prunes all the graces of God, and makes room for them in our hearts to grow. The life and vigour of our spiritual lives consists in the vigour and flourishing of the plants of grace in our hearts." Owen goes on to compare the heart of the believer with a garden in which herbs and useful plants have been planted, but when left unattended weeds and thorns will grow around them and make them weak and unhealthy. He explains,"The heart is like the sluggard's field, so overgrown with weeds that you can scarce see the good corn. Such a man may search for faith, love and zeal, and scarce be able to find any; and if he do discover that these graces are there, still alive and sincere, yet they are so weak, so clogged with lusts, that they are of very little use; they remain indeed, but are ready to die."This is why we need to often search our hearts and work to root out the weeds of sin. We always have to be diligent in this because as long as we live in these mortal bodies, we will never be able to completely root out or destroy all indwelling sin. This can be discouraging to some, but it should serve to humble us and cause us to constantly look to and depend on Christ, for without Him we can do nothing.When addressing specific sin, Owen suggests considering the guilt of sin, the dangers of sin, and the evil of sin. Sin grieves the Holy Spirit and shames and insults the person, work and name of Christ, who died to pay for it. Grace weakens the power of sin, but strengthens the guilt of sin. However, the heart is deceptive and will try to minimize sin.It also pleases the Enemy and damages your testimony and effectiveness for the Kingdom of God.Next Owen offers further practical advice and direction for dealing with sin, including:1) Keep one's conscience sensitive to the guilt of it by bringing it under the lens of both the Law and the Gospel. Owen points out that it's the law of God which shows us our sin and holds up before us the standard of holiness. God uses his Law not only to convict lost men, but to expose sin in converted men as well, and to bring us to sorrow and repentance over it.2) Avoid opportunities and situations which may give sin an advantage. "Men will do this with respect to their bodily infirmities and distempers: the seasons, the diet, the air that have proved offensive shall be avoided. Are the things of the soul of less importance?"3) Take action at the first notice of sin arising. If you give sin and inch, it will take a mile. Make every effort to stop sin in its tracks and nip it in the bud as soon as it rears its ugly head. "It is impossible to fix bounds to sin. It is like water in a channel; it if once break out, it will have its course."4) Continually encourage and stimulate the desire for deliverance from sin's power. We can become accepting and tolerant of a particular sin, especially if it's part of our natural temperament.5) Read and contemplate often on the greatness, majesty, and holiness of God. This will always help to give you a right view of your sinfulness.In the last chapter, Owen reminds us of the roles of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, whom we have helping and sanctifying us. As our great High Priest, Christ suffered and died to destroy sin and to present us holy and blameless (Col. 1:22), and He continues to intercede for us before the Father. We have also been given the Spirit, "who alone clearly and fully convinces the heart of the evil, and guilt, and danger of the corruption, lust or sin to be mortified; Without this conviction, there will be no thorough work made." The Spirit also assists, empowers, and encourages us, and intercedes for us when we pray.I leave with you this encouraging reminder from Owen: "Christ, by his death, destroying the works of the devil, procuring the Spirit for us, hath so killed sin as to its reign in believers, that it shall not obtain its end and dominion." When you are in the midst of the struggle, remember, "In thy greatest distress and anguish, consider that fullness of grace, those riches, those treasures of strength, might and help, that are laid up in [Christ] for our support."

Williams If I were giving a review for the portion of the book that took place in 19th century Paris it would be a 5-star review. Unfortunately, that would be reviewing only a portion of the book. The modern-day portion of the story featured a most detestable woman who was whiny, petulant, and ultimately, a hypocrite. Towards the end I found myself skimming her chapters because I hated her so much. But the 19th century chapters were fascinating and I enjoyed them thoroughly.

By Book Barmy I admire any first time author who has the courage and fortitude to keep writing and get a novel (any novel) published, so it is with mixed feelings that I must tell you I tried to look at this debut from several different viewpoints, but there is no getting around my disappointment.Perhaps I had unrealistically high expectations - what a great story could be told -- the unopened apartment, the story behind the painting, Marthe and the time of the Belle Epoque. Then contrast that with the modern-day story of the antiques experts who must have been agog at the opportunity to research the priceless antiques and delve into Marthe's journals.The actual Marthe started out as a bartender at the famous Les Folies Bergères, became an elegant courtesan known for having famous lovers, including a few prime ministers, a French president and the artist Boldini. Marthe left the apartment to her granddaughter, Madame de Florian, who shuttered the apartment and fled Paris at the start of WWII.So, I was seriously excited to open this book and settle in for a good read.The chapters alternate between Marthe de Florian's story told through fictionalized diary entries and April Vogt, a current-day American furniture expert from Sotheby’s who is called to Paris to help prepare the contents of the apartment for auction.Marthe's storyline was at times fascinating and the author (thankfully) took much from her actual life -- how she created her name, her elegant persona and how she dug herself out of a brothel into the high class society during the Bell Epoque. In contrast, the modern day story of April Vogt reads like poorly written chic-lit. I found my self slogging through April's chapters and only somewhat enjoying Marthe's.There is some magical writing - the description of the famous chandelier at Les Folies Bergères is wonderful. The Paris setting(s) are beautifully and deliciously described. However, Ms. Gable stumbles in re-telling Marthe's story, her diary entries seemed staged and she lets modern day language creep in. Sadly April is completely one-dimensional, so much so that this reader ended up disliking her character and her storyline was so predictable that I found myself imagining other outcomes. The novel borders on the raunchy and is written with such tactlessness that I cringed for the real Marthe de Florian. I found the ending almost ridiculous and in need of major editing - or perhaps, even completely deletedSigh -- The Paris Apartment gets many 4 and 5 star reviews on both Goodreads and Amazon, so I am in the minority here. (Perhaps you'll like this novel - go and seek it out if it interests you.)Unfortunately, I wanted more -- more richness, more depth, better writing - not this breezy and shallow version of what in reality must have been a fascinating story. 125 of 137 people found the following review helpful. Great Story, but By labergerebasque I really wanted to like this book, so in spite of limited enthusiasm when I read the sample I ordered it. I kept wanting to like it, but the "cinq à six" à repétion (it is "cinq à sept" for the afternoon dalliance), credibility was lacking. Maybe I had hoped too much to read the "real" story about this fabulous find, the forgotten Paris apartment. The story wasn't too bad, but the writing was too much Danielle Steel for me, as though an adolescent had written it for the following masses. I prefer far more "personality" and intelligence in prose. I probably would still be wondering about this book had I not read it...but there is no getting around my disappointment.

What does this situation mean for her and her family?Maggie lost her biological parents during World War II, and her beloved younger brother died in an orphanage after the war. Heartbroken and scared, she was raised by foster parents near Bristol, England. In the 1950s, British mothers often told their children that a midwife or a stork brought each new baby, so many young women were naïve about the facts of life. Maggie and her foster mother never discussed where babies came from.Maggie craves love at the beginning of this story, but the father of her baby has sailed away from their coastal village, and she knows this unexpected pregnancy will humiliate her foster family. Since she has no place else to turn, Maggie begins to contemplate suicide, thinking it will be better for her child to be cradled in heaven rather than dying slowly in an orphanage like Maggie's brother.Q: Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor spans four generations of women, slipping back and forth between a past and contemporary story. Why did you choose to include that aspect as part of her story?Parents of kids on the autism spectrum often experience a lot of guilt and shed many tears on behalf of their son or daughter. Until parents have a diagnosis, there is a lot of confusion as to why their child is different than other kids and why they struggle to do seemingly simple tasks when really they are fighting to survive. There can also be judgment from teachers and other adults who are confused or uneducated--like my husband and I used to be--about this spectrum.Children on the autism spectrum often struggle with self-control and relationships, but they can also be incredibly bright, passionate people, such as Libby, who excel at art or science or whatever talents God has given them. In this story, I wanted to celebrate these wonderful kids and encourage moms, in particular, who might feel hopeless and alone.Q: Willow Cottage, the home of the Doyle family, sits in the shadows of the Croft family's Ladenbrooke Manor. What is the significance of these shadows?The Crofts are an upper class, noble family in England while Walter and Maggie Doyle are solidly middle class. During the 1950s, there were strict society rules between the British classes, but both Oliver (the son of Lord and Lady Croft) and Libby (the Doyles' daughter) defy these rules. Like the boundaries of society, a stone wall separated Ladenbrooke Manor and Willow Cottage until tragedy strikes both families and these social boundaries begin to crumble. Ultimately God's light shines through the shadows on both sides of the wall.Q: Your favorite characters to write about are everyday heroes and heroines who sacrifice their lives for someone else. Do any of your characters sacrifice their lives in Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor?I am fascinated by seemingly ordinary people today and throughout history who have done extraordinary things to help others. In Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor, Walter chooses to sacrifice his career and his plans for the future to raise Maggie's daughter. He grows to love Libby, and even though his emotions are tumultuous throughout this story, Walter ultimately decides to accept and care for this girl he believes God has given him. Also, Maggie originally thinks that taking her own life, along with the life of her unborn daughter, is the most loving thing to do for her child, but Walter stops her from killing herself. She ultimately sacrifices herself to fight for Libby and to care for Libby's daughter.Q: There seem to be some similarities in time period and setting between the BBC's surprise hit Call the Midwife and Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor. Why do you think Call the Midwife has become such a popular program in both England and the United States, and what are some of the parallels between this show and your latest novel?Viewers love Call the Midwife for many reasons, but some of the main reasons are because it's a show about a character reflecting back on her life during the 1950s with new clarity and because of the rich themes of faith and morality that echo through the generations. Also, the stories take an honest look at both the beauty and sometimes sorrow that happen with each new birth. Each episode is authentic in its display of inner and external conflict while maintaining its focus on the relationship between God and humanity.The story in Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor is also bound together by Walter's journal entries as he reflects back on life in England during a similar era. I hope readers will appreciate the honest perspective of the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy and wrestle through their own emotions alongside the characters. Also similar to Call the Midwife, the themes of faith and grace are integral to this story.Q: Could you tell us about the trip you took to research this book?I visit all the main settings of my novels to capture the spirit and culture of each location along with the sights, sounds and even tastes of the area. I spent a week on a "whistle stop" tour of England last spring, exploring Oxford, London, Bristol and the lovely manor homes in the Cotswolds. I thoroughly enjoyed my many pots of English tea, sleeping in homes that were almost 1,000 years old and meandering through cottage gardens around Oxford. I also had the pleasure of meeting up with friends and fellow novelists Carrie Turansky and Cathy Gohlke while they researched for their upcoming novels and then spending the day with a lovely British woman named Evelyn who thought my novel should be set in the quaint village called Bibury. Terrific and intriguing story that will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime By Connie Fischer Clevedon EnglandWhen Margaret (Maggie) Emerson finds herself pregnant and deserted by Elliot, a foreign sailor, she accepts the proposal of Walter Doyle, editor of the local newspaper. When her pregnancy begins to show right away, many of the local gossips figure she was pregnant before she got married. When her daughter is, Libby, is born, she is a tiny baby so Maggie convinces Walter that she is premature.Walter loves his job writing for the newspaper, but Maggie finally persuades him to move somewhere else because she is afraid he will find out that she was pregnant when he married her. He gets a job as a postman and she gets a job as housekeeper to the family at Ladenbrooke Manor and the family lives in a house adjacent to the Manor grounds.As Libby starts to grow, it is obvious that things are not as they should be with her. She will not do her school work nor will she stay off the grounds of the Manor as requested by the owners. Her happiness is found in watching and later, painting, butterflies. I guess she is what someone might then have called a fey child. However, today, we would know that she has a form of autism. She soon gains the attention of the son of the Manor and a relationship develops. When she becomes pregnant by him, her family hides the pregnancy and she gives birth to a girl she names Heather. Even though Libby nurses the baby, her attention span is not good enough to care for Heather properly, so Maggie says she is Heather's mother.The story then jumps to Heather who is a divorced woman living in Portland Oregon and the mother of a girl who has just gotten married. When after the death of her parents Heather arrives at their home to clean it out to prepare it for sale, many secrets come to light that have been hidden for many years. She meets up with a man she once loved when she was a girl and their relationship soon rekindles.There are so many secrets and twists and turns in this novel that the reader will not want to put it down. I was completely enthralled and enjoyed it immensely.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Expertly woven complex story By A.R.S. Melanie Dobson has written a very thoughtful, heartbreaking and at times heart-wrenching novel. This is a family drama that affects several generations of women and the men that they love. Told from multiple points of view, we have 45 year old Heather, who after the death of her father needs to go back to the family home in England and get it ready for sale. Burdened by secrets of her own, she and her daughter Ella begin going through the home and its contents. Heather uncovers her late older sister Libby’s book of drawings of butterflies. As her parents never really shared any information with her concerning her sister and her death, only that she was sick, Heather decides to learn more about the sibling she never knew. We the reader, like Heather, are then pulled into a story of secrets, lies, forbidden love, family sin, sickness, and even murder. As Heather is learning all this, she then realizes that even her secrets are just too costly to keep. This was a riveting read with a Gothic feel and I enjoyed Ms. Dobson’s way of telling the story in both the past and the present, always keeping us on our toes with wanting to find out how each story will resolve itself. Bravo. I look forward to more of her books. I received a copy of this book for an honest review from the author and the publisher, Howard Books, and the opinions are my own.

I was glued to the book and was not disappointed. The characters were solid and the story was well written. I did not want the experience to end. Going back and forth between the present and past drove the story and helped to understand and root for even the characters I might not agree with yet so believable it made me want to go find the Ladenbrooke Manor. From beginning to end time stood still and these people were so real that I forgot I was reading a fiction book. I wanted to know all the people and by the end no one can say that for a little while these characters were real. The mistakes that take on a fantastic beauty of forgiveness, love and tragedy. That these characters were so real and had a depth of character that I am richer just for having read this. Ms. Dobson took the failings of these people and wove beautiful story of redemption. The richness of this story and the previous book are a benefit to every reader who wants to experience life’s complexities even if it is only vicarious. The world is more vivid and people are a mystery worth interacting with just to uncover the longings of an individual and sharing these triumphs that sometimes seem so tragic at the start.I would like to thank Net Galley and Howard Books for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

By Nischal Prajapati A nicely written book about a young girls life as she adjusts to a new place and struggles against her parents and what they have decided is best for her. The characters were real, not stiff and this is a book I will read again in the future.

Alisdair (Alec), former spy and heir to a Scottish earldom, has been ordered to return home and face his responsibilities. I did have some difficulty understanding the Scottish inheritance rules and family connections, and the ending felt a little rushed. But overall, I enjoyed this romance. This series is a must read for me By Gaele I think I fell in love with this series when I read Tall, Dark and Royal, and each installment since then has been pure delight. With plenty of humor from both heroes and heroines, understandable angst and some fairly steamy passages, Vanessa Kelly has created stories that intertwine with familiar characters but stand solidly alone without great loss of understanding for the reader.Eden is the focus of this story: headstrong, daring and bold, she’s felt herself at somewhat of a loss since her twin’s marriage. So, to test her powers, and perhaps dare to experiment a bit, she is found in a compromising position with an utter bounder. The gossip and cut directs will not end, so Eden’s only choice is to retreat from London until talk dies down.Alasdair Gilbride, best friend and cousin to Eden’s brother in law is one of the only men able to distinguish Eden from her twin Evie, and he finds the irrepressible and slightly madcap Edie much to his liking. I only read her first novella in the Renegade Royals series but had fun reading the fourth story. It’s an excellent blend of romance and adventure set in the Highlands! I received a copy of it, from NetGalley, in exchange for an honest opinion.Ms. Kelly nicely blended her charming characters Alasdair and Eden into a captivating love story filled with twists and turns! The plot was well developed, lots of passion with a dash of humour.The chemistry between them is like going on a roller coaster ride, up and down!I totally loved this book and lovers of Scottish romances will be in for a treat!

Her third book, "Sine Curve..." does not disappoint, and in fact is her best yet! Each page is a mastery of language and storytelling, leaving you desperate to get to the next page and chapter. I always look forward to what Scharmyn comes up with next!

I found myself organizing my day so that I would have time to read. I am a fan of science fiction authors like Neal Stephenson and Isaac Asimov, and while this book borders on fantasy, the author is clearly finding a voice of her own and created a world that I felt like I could see in mind. This is a great read and I strongly recommend it.

Harvey This novel is thematically a Western although its settings are non -traditional for the genre .Much of the book is set in Alaska when it was owned by Russia and was the focus of a concerted attempt by some US politicians to acquire the territory from its exploitative owners ,A key section takes place in Siberia and at the court of the Czar in St Petersburg .Throw in lenghty sections set a sea , including a rousing sea battle and you have several elements not normally found in the archetypal Western ,Yet ,withal ,a Western it is, with Cossacks standing in for Native Americans and Russian aristocrats as the despoilers and bandits .The hero is a typical L'Amour protagonist .Jean LaBarge is rugged ,two -fisted and well capable of looking after himself in a fight both armed and unarmed .He wins the hand of a beautiful aristocratic young woman and carves out a niche for himself in the world by dint of energy and vision .The opening four chapters are essentially a pre-amble to the main story and depict Jean as a young man growing to manhood in the swamps along the Susquehannah ,becoming friends with the bokish Rob Walker who later becomes a prominent political figure with a vision of an American Alaska .They tell of his capture by an outlaw band and how he goes on to be a world traveller ans a moderately prosperous trader .The novel does not begin to really get going until the action shifts to Alaska ,a land which is Jean's obsession .He falls for the fair Helena , a niece of the Czar and wife to an honourable Russian administrator ,but earns ther enmity of the corrupt and ruthless Zinnovy who seeks to exercise total control over Alaska turning it into his personal fiefdom .Before events reach their climax in an Alaskan courtroom murder has been done ,a chase has taken place acros place acros the frozen tundra of Siberia and Jean has been flung into prison and condemned to deathThere is a lot of plot to get through and now and agian it feels rushed but the pace and vigour of the storytelling compensate and there is -as usual with this writer -some splendid descriptions of the natural beauty of the landscapeThis is never dull and I recommend it to lovers of historical romance as well as Western readers

Mckinzie Louis L'Amour turned his attention to historical fiction in this story of America's acquisition of Alaska. Some of the characters in the book really did exist. But the main character is fictional. It's a departure from his usual Western Action writing (which he did occasionally, with great success) but still has enough action to satisfy fans who like a lot of that. It's my second favorite L'Amour book and I, as well as others, have waited impatiently for it to be released on Kindle. I contacted the Louis L'Amour website and his son said that there were delays because of it being a different publisher, or something of that nature. Whatever the problem; I'm glad it's released. Basically, it's a story of two young boys who become unlikely friends and stay friends all their lives. One leads a life of adventure and the other one leads a life of quietly helping to shape a nation, sometimes using information from his adventurous friend. While some of the things that the adventurous one does are almost too much to believe, but that's true in real life, too.

By Melinda I read this mostly because I'm obsessed with Alaska, and I was a little disappointed because so much of it took place in other locations.I might have given this a four if it were more my genre, but I simply don't like heroes who are so good at EVERYTHING. He's the best rider, the best fist fighter, and knows more about Alaska than anyone alive, even before he goes there for the first time. He's charming and handsome and brave and smart and a princess falls in love with him. Seasoned sailors bow to his wisdom. Politicians listen to him. It's a bit too much to take.I also found a few parts confusing, partly because I don't know enough about sailing terms and Russian Politics of the mid 1800s.There was some good excitement, though. I especially loved the portage scene. And though the hero and his Russian princess fall in love at first sight (another of my least favorite tropes), I loved Helena's character, and the way they are so honorable about their love, not acting on it since she is married (by arranged marriage) to an older man she isn't in love with, but whom she respects and loves in her own way. That felt very fresh.L'Amour's prose isn't bad, though sometimes it does get bogged down in long descriptions or repetitions that hit the reader over the head with a frying pan. He does have some great insightful lines, however.Overall, a good read if you like the genre.

The two settle in and Anna meets the owner’s son, Jacob, the same handsome cowboy with the dazzling blue eyes she’d seen at the mercantile.Through the next year with all the wilds of Texas including bad weather, cattle rustlers and wondering bears, Jacob learns he can’t live without her and she learns she needs to let God guide her life.Ms. Beller has written a delightful story of the Texas frontier. This is book is well written with characters that you will fall in love with. It is set in my favorite era for historical books, the Civil Ward era. I am looking forward to book 2 in this series. My thanks to the author for the pleasure of reading and reviewing her book. I received a copy of the book for this honest review. I highly recommend.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book! By deedee62 Anna and her brother travel to Texas to live with relatives of her deceased parents. With her she takes her little brother Edward.Edward is offered a job at a ranch and as he is only 15, Anna has a big problem with that. She is afraid that ranching is a dangerous job and she doesn’t want her little brother to get hurt. As a result, she pays a visit to the ranch owner asking that he not hire her brother. Instead of not hiring him he offers her a job as well, as a cook to his family and ranch hands. He does this as a favor to her, so that she will be close by to watch her brother. Unbeknownst to this man, Anna is a very good cook and thus a win, win.Jacob, son to the ranch owner after having been away for a few weeks returns and meets the young lady he once saw briefly in town. He is immediately drawn to the beautiful girl, however he wants to concentrate on his job and not a woman, although feelings for each other get stronger.This type of storyline is what I really enjoy reading. The main characters in this book treat each other with mutual respect. There is none of the rude man/woman towards the other for a time. I can’t stand when one of the characters is especially rude to the other for ½ the book. While I do like to read about the man attempting to keep his distance from the woman, maybe because of past hurts, there is no need to be rude in the process.When I saw this book I immediately decided to read it because I believe you cannot go wrong with Ms. Beller’s books. I have read the books in her mountain dreams series (and await the next) and have already pre-ordered the next two in this Texas Rancher series. Kudos to this wonderful author.
