Margaret of Anjou was Queen of England during the period known as the War of the Roses. As a fifteen year-old bride she had many difficulties to face. She brought no dowry to her adopted land, which was still at war with her native land. Not least of all, her husband was reluctant to come to her bed. With a weak and ineffective king on the throne, rival parties tilted for power. When the struggle escalated into war, Margaret realized she had no choice but to suppress the feminine side of her nature in order to protect her feeble-minded husband and helpless son. Leading her party, dictating policy, dealing with foreign princes, she became, in fact, king in all but name.

This book is a historical novel based during the War of Roses. The story starts with Margaret of Anjou discovering that her husband Henry VI is in a comatose state right before she goes into her confinement. From there she and the Duke of Buckingham try for awhile to hide the fact that her husband is simple minded. We see her grow as a person and get an inside look at how her mind and thoughts work. It took awhile for me to get into it as I thought that it was a romance novel from the cover. But it was a great read non-the-less. If you are looking for a different take on this point in history, than this book is for you.Great writing and the flow of the book worked well.

This is the first book I have read from the stand point of Margaret of Ajou. I liked seeing how she wasn't as cold and heartless as she was made out to be. When she went back to France and sat with her father and cried in his arms it seemed like that relieved her of her stress and prepared her for war again. The only thing I found sort of wrong was that there were just a few small areas that dragged a little. But, overall a great book and I highly recommend it. I was provided a complimentary copy of the book for an honest review

The king seemed like he may have suffered from some kind of brain impairment after his illness. I really like how the author described the places and people in such detail it made me able to imagine in my head what the countryside may have looked like and what the people may have looked like. I think if the nobles had not changed loyalties at the drop of a hat she may have had a chance at holding the kingdom until her son came of age to rule. I had to reread some parts because I got confused as to who was on who's side and what lands. If you are more into the romantic side of this time period you may not enjoy this book as much but I say still read it and you may still ended up enjoying it. I'm surprised the armies could still have the energy to fight after all the marches not to mention the inclement weather they endured. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by this author. I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
