About the Author
Pamela Manners is a fourth-generation, born and bred Oklahoman.
Manners served on the psychology faculty at Troy University from 1985 until she retired in 2009. She earned her BA in elementary education and taught third and fourth grade at a Department of Defense school in England. She then earned her MA in reading education and taught remedial reading to middle school students before pursuing her PhD in educational psychology with a focus on adolescent development. She received all her degrees from the University of Oklahoma. .
Between the two of them, Manners and her husband have four children, four grandsons, and one granddaughter, dispersed over three countries and two states. They live in Alabama in a house built in 1880, which they enjoy sharing with Rita and Lucy, their golden retrievers.

Emmy is a fun loving girl looking for adventure and she finds more than she bargains for. Nevertheless she lives a long life, weathering four marriages, two of which end abruptly in tragic circumstances; survives the booms and busts of Oklahoma’s oil discoveries and the Great Depression with its dust storms and poverty. Emmy’s first romance is a text for what young girls should avoid and her graphic description of her mother giving childbirth can save parents from explaining the birds and bees. However, the book is not all about Emmy, it is also the story of how the American west was settled and survived, told in terms of simple family life and death. By Catie Strickland Emmy Rowan, a young girl in early Oklahoma territory and daughter of John and Maudie Rowan, is mainly expected like her older sister, Carnie, to help her mother, Maudie with the younger children and the chores that come with a hard-scrabble existence. Emmy who is eagerly helpful at her chores is also smart and creative at escaping what she finds boring or a bother. Even so, one can't help but feel that Emmy (short for Emerald) is the daughter that John and Maggie find both irritating and truly loving and lovable. Her personality is infectious and creates many adventures, good and not-so-good throughout her childhood, adolescence, and into the trials of adulthood. She handles her increasing responsibilities with the same verve that took her her this far. Emmy manages to grow in wisdom while maintaining the curiosity and love of life that she came into this world with and leaves behind for future generations that same spirit of individuality and true zest for life. I loved reading Emmy's time.

The characters in the book face many hardships as most people did during this time in history. The story is set in Oklahoma and takes the reader through a lot of the state's history. The book is a suspenseful, page turner that leaves the reader dying to know what happens next. I could not put this book down until I finished it. Definitely a great read!
