By Nadia Gerassimenko Wind of North is a digest which compiles poems about the New Age philosophy in the realm of the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual. It’s about God lighting one with clarity, joyfulness, and enjoyment and guiding them to their true path independent of anyone or anything else. It’s about seeing God in one’s self and in everyone, feeling interconnected with all beings, and being connected with the universe. It’s about nurturing the childlike quality in one’s self. It’s about positive thinking and self-awakening and self-growth.I am not very well-informed about the New Age, so not all poems are crystal clear to me. Perhaps having written an introduction about the philosophy would have shed more light on it. The titles of the poems in Latin could have included translations in footnotes to give the reader a better understanding of what the poems are going to be about. Besides that, several poems sound forced when read due to uncompromising rhyming structure in some of them; consequently, the essence gets lost when the author is looking for the exact rhyming word with another that may not necessarily fit with the line’s true meaning. With that said, I otherwise think that the poems are very lyrical, enlightening, and hopeful. One doesn’t need to be a believer to recognize the wisdom in the poems as they hold simple universal truths that many can agree upon. They also inspire positivity, confidence, and proactiveness.I especially like the poem Ferre. It’s superbly melodic, and I can imagine a group of fellows treading in an enchanting forest collectively singing it together, especially the lines: And you can see! / Yes, you can see increasingly. / Increasingly. / The gift of King makes everything visible. / Visible. Single Song is another favorite of mine. It touches and uplifts me to know that God is full of compassion; He loves and forgives. His love and light encourage one to feel gratefulness and to open all their senses and free themselves of anything that hinders them from living the life they’re meant to live. These lines particularly speak to my soul: Your heart is awoken / when chamber is broken. / Your soul is singing, / your body is swinging / and moments are bringing / you sense of beginning.

Burd, Jr. Those who struggle to satisfy their appetite for New Age Poetry need look no further than Peter Veter’s “Wind of the North.” Promising “intellectual and philosophical pleasure as well as spiritual growth,” this October 2015 release on Amazon Digital Services includes poems with impressive sounding Latin titles such as “Semita Aquilonem” and “Peregrinatione,” titles which indeed promise an intellectual and philosophical depth few modern poets have successfully approached. The poems themselves, loaded with monosyllabic rhymes and nugatory religious platitudes, offer ample opportunities for comparison with other works in the New Age genre.Readers who are new to the genre may ask themselves what qualities define New Age poetry, and an understanding of the characteristics of this classification can only aid in the appreciation of poetry proclaiming such a label. The belief in an Age of Aquarius, where peace and harmony will rule the world, belief in the power of positive thinking, of spiritual healing, of spiritual beings, and Eastern ritualistic practices, all contribute to the philosophy of the movement. Veter’s poems appear to strive especially to build upon the belief that a positive attitude is a force for positive change, while containing a smattering of other New Age elements as well.Included in this collection is a pair of poems entitled “From Classical Banality Cycle I” and “From Classical Banality Cycle II.” As “banality” is the condition of being unoriginal and unimaginative, the reader is left to wonder why the author would draw extensively on a style he considers both classical and unimaginative. The concept of “classical banality” brings to the mind of this reviewer the act of chewing apart classical poetry containing the rich vocabulary and profound musings of Old World thinkers and vomiting the words back onto the page in haphazard order. This particular illustration of “classical banality” surely was not our poet’s intention. On the contrary, Veter’s intentions are clear, both in his promise to readers of spiritual growth and pleasure, and in his decision to present this literary compilation under the banner of New Age thinking. The final determination on whether such promises made are indeed fulfilled must ultimately be made by each sojourning reader.
