He was raised in a liberal Jewish home with a strong emphasis on civil rights and social justice. So to Glen Feigman, there was no question that Dr. King’s speech would be the catalyst for a brighter future—one in which children would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
Now, in the year 2011, Glen is an out gay man living in the city of Chicago. But when he, along with his elderly mother, witnesses one of many violent attacks plaguing his hometown, he begins reflecting on his past and childhood—questioning everything he thought he knew about race, character, and the true nature of acceptance.
Glen traces the influence of racial tension and pervasive prejudices throughout the 1970s, ’80s, and 2000s, including a shocking event that would forever change the way he viewed race relations.
With eye-opening honesty and candor, The Color of Character is a coming-of-age tale that raises questions about the true state of race relations in America today.

By Denise C I read this book over the course of a few days while on vacation and cried when I finished it -- I didn't want it to end. I just loved Glen so much! The author's writing is so bravely honest and the book brought me back to my childhood growing up on the Northshore of Chicago where the book takes place in the 60's and 70's. The varied stories of adolescence, friendships, and just trying to fit in were spot on, all the while being raised in a tight knit traditional Jewish home that was also very liberal. It was such a satisfying read, and quite often humorous at just the right times. I thank the author for temporarily bringing me to a place that I loved so much with such interesting characters and complicated relationships, all through his expert eyes. I am still thinking about it. All I can say is BRAVO! There is a lot to learn and feel from the author's literary prose. Thank you, Glen Shuld, for inviting us into your world. I can definitely see this being a hit movie!

By Joan Curto A coming of age story that is thought provoking, yet still current given the political times we are in. Mr Shuld writes about one boys experiences in a time of integration in the 70's in the Midwest. Honest & bold, yet remains entertaining; incorporating the humor of his Jewish family against the times of racial unrest and integration. Mr Shuld is a terrific writer with well developed characters, and some of them are " characters" and a story that comes from the eyes of a boy;searching for his own identity at the same time a nation is searching for the same. I can easily see this story as a movie- one withgreat depth dealing with the confusion that occurred for many, and still does, at times today. I can see many conversations occurring due to the themes he presents. A triumph for a first novel, or any novel for that matter.

It is coming to know who you are, your beliefs, attitudes, prejudices and your level of tolerance. What I found interesting and sad is that not much has changed regarding racial intolerance, while great strides have been made in the acceptance of alternative lifestyles, I found myself questioning why there is still so much racial discrimination in our country. On one hand, I believe that blacks in America have done it to themselves. On the other, whites have certainly played their part. This book will explain what I mean when I say blacks are their own worst enemy. The author shares much of the confusion and pain that he endured growing up. The book is well written and definitely worth reading. You will find yourself questioning your level of tolerance, prejudice and acceptance. The author creates a very satisfying ending.
