Nothing much changes in historic Eagle Valley, Virginia. That's a good thing for Arden McCrae. It's easier to manage her visions of the future when there isn't much to see. Arden would rather stay buried in the certainty that comes with stories of the past. Fortunately, running the local antique store and keeping up with the Eagle Valley Historical Society gives her plenty of history to hide behind.  When her aging parents are forced to sell their farm to pay for medical care, Arden sees big changes ahead. The sale threatens the historic status of Eagle Valley, and Arden's own store is in peril. Meanwhile, her father's rapidly advancing Alzheimer's keeps him locked in a heartbreaking past. The rest of the McCrae family is left to make difficult decisions for the days to come.  The future that nobody wants is descending fast, and Arden must face the visions she's always avoided. Soon, her town is divided over their historic status and her family is shattered by her father's declining health. Arden will have to choose whether to fight to preserve the past or learn to embrace the future.

The author immediately drew me into the quaint little town of Eagle Valley and Arden McCrae's small, safe world. You wish that she could stay cocooned in her lovely antique store but realize she needs to begin her life anew. The conflict weighs heavily on the reader. Arden's strong bonds with her family and dealings with Alzheimer's ring true for so many of us–it was easy to relate.Ellen Smith's writing was flawless and the story just wrapped me up in its tentacles and wouldn't let me go. I LOVED IT! So refreshing, so innovative, and perfectly executed.

Elephants have long been known to be psychic and use telepathy when they grieve. Well Cassandra is in tune with her premonitions. I love the opening line because it is about Cassandra’s premonition; “I feel change rolling through Eagle Valley like a mist before the storm.” Cassandra feels things before they happen and this is the reason she is often reluctant. She was named for the Greek Cassandra who had the gift of foreseeing the future.Reluctant Cassandra is a brilliant southern novel that has a strong sense of setting. It is set in a historic southern town where change doesn’t happen often, and when it does it is often unsettling. History and family are important. The recession has taken a toll on the ritualistic lives of historic Eagle Valley where American flags line Maine Street and the historic architecture is so iconic. Cassandra works at an antique shop, and she tells stories about the old furniture she sells using her psychic abilities. The mist of change that has taken over the town and Cassandra’s life includes her father being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other problems. She must sell her parents’ home and leave the life she has grown to love. On top of that she and her boyfriend break up. I love this novel because it was relaxing and easy to read. I loved the dog Thor and the characters grew on me. This is a great literary novel. It is about family, friends, and neighbors and coming together. It’s about love overcoming obstacles and individuals being in tune with the universe and their premonitions and who they are. I would recommend this novel to study groups, book clubs, or anyone planning on writing a good southern novel. The book cover, editing, and formatting are all awesome.Maggie CollinsAuthor of Celestial Blue Skies, shortlisted for the Ernest Gaines Award

Reluctant, but not frozen By gogalgodes The author has done an amazing job of creating a community and then gently pulling you into the story in such a way that you feel you are standing next to the main character, Arden, and experiencing the world with her. What you see through her eyes and feel through her reactions is a personal world that is in flux due to outside sources, and her need to make changes in response. Arden needs to find a path to move forward while her 'constants' - her personal relationships, her parents, and her home town - are beginning to recede toward being her past. However, Arden has a unique connection with the past, and in some ways it grounds her. She possess a unique ability to sense how objects touched by people have also borne witness to change, just as people touched by other people do. And while the topic matter is serious and often heart-wrenching, be prepared for a few laughs along the way.
