Abandoned as an infant and adopted into a circus troop, Tuesday longs for a normal life outside the clutches of her cruel and degrading employer. While trained as a tumbler and aerialist, Tuesday’s eight year old body is covered in tattoos that are her trademark act in the sideshow. After a near-death experience, Tuesday sets out with a loyal companion in search of a normal life. Set in the Prohibition-era American South, Tuesday’s Gone is a reflection of a bygone era, often misunderstood and misrepresented in popular culture. The underlying themes represent the culture of the day, as well as capturing the essence of the American spirit in a post-reconstruction setting.

The author really brought the '20s back to life both through great descriptions and characters that were true to the time. And really, what's not to love about a girl that works in a circus for a living? I've always been fascinated with travelling shows and I think the author did a great job capturing the nature of freak shows and circuses. It was often gritty and brutal, a more of a behind the scenes look into carnies rather than the glitz and glamour show they perform for customers and I appreciated that. The author also gave us the perspective from an eight year old girl, which felt genuinely child like, which is hard to do.So why only three stars? There's a couple reasons, mostly grammatical. There's a lot of run on sentences, missed punctuation and misused words, problems that could have been easily fixed by another run through with an editor or proofreader. The author also jumps from character to character and often without warning, which is jarring. One minute you're reading from the perspective of an eight year old girl, and in the next, you're in the lion's head. These errors drew me from the story and they happened a lot. The plot was also a bit straightforward with only a few twists, but it's a good book to read in a sitting or two.

The plot is truly unique and the characters are so complex and well written it's hard not to fall in love with them. James Windale uses his finely tuned writing skills to craft a beautiful piece of fiction.

Fall in love with the characters, even the ones you love to hate. I knew when I read the first chapter, Judah was going to be my favorite and make me want a pet lion of my own. I can't wait for his next book!
