The picture this book paints of a royal family defamed and torn apart is more realistic than a silly girl saying, "Let them eat cake," chiseled into our simple collective memory of her as another reason for the French Revolution. The royal family watched from their captivity as food meant for the starving population was dumped into the Seine by a political rival in order to cause more privation in order to turn the people against the royal family.I hated the cruel abuse Marie's young son suffered. He was a child, only eight years old when taken from his mother and put into solitary confinement. Rats, tumors, scabies, sores, and madness from insufficient nutrition, lack of ANY light, a toilet, or human contact for many months on end were his fate. He clung to the kind doctor finally allowed to see him, but it was too late to reverse the physical damage caused by his incarceration. The young king could no longer stand up because of tumors in his knees. He died in this state at ten years of age. That this should happen to ANY child at any time, for any reason caused me to ache inside.I had previously wondered what had become of Marie's children. They never deserved the treatment they received. If France had not so heavily contributed funds to the cause of revolution in America, the French Revolution and its cruel and bloody ways may not have happened as it did. Times of fear and hunger give evil and cruel men a foothold in society. The convoluted way that the fate of the last king of France was identified after two-hundred years is a mystery worth reading. It was interesting to hear accounts from the people who were actually a part of this part of history quoted in this book.I was kept up at night by this book, I found it impossible to put down. The humanity of this family was brought to life. A fourteen year old girl marries a a fifteen year old boy. They are really just children, starting a family. Their positions were thrust upon them.Marie and Louis XVI were surrounded by people they should or should not trust, without the maturity to discern the difference.Marie endured the deaths of two children before the revolution. She was still mourning the death of a son when arrested. This was not a shallow woman only interested in candy, clothes and jewelry, used to having all her heart desired. Marie and Louis endeavored to do what was best for their country and children while financing colonists in America fighting for freedom from England. This hard look into their personal lives changed my view of the French Revolution and that portion of French and American history.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the French Revolution or the French royal family and its fate. It is compelling, detailed, and well researched. It is NOT fiction based on historic events. It is a portion of history, laid out with care.

By Jane Williams Couldn't put the book down and now am reading nonfiction to learn more about that period...which is what good fiction should do!
