How sad the way they were treated By Karen Grossaint Book really made me think about what these American born Japanese American citizens went thru at the hands of our government. How sad the way they were treated. This book evolves the characters so well with just enough info about them and not so much that you get bogged down with their personalities. Just a marvelous book that gives so much insight into what the Nisei's went thru. How they worked so hard to build their lives and then to have it taken away and have them herded into these camps, how badly they were treated and how awful the conditions. OMG I admire and respect them for their perseverance and how they all worked together and were so respectful of their parents. Haro worked hard and applied himself and fought hard for this country after how badly he was treated. It was a different time...you won't find many kids today with this kind of respect for their parents nor their work ethic. Just an amazing and enlightening book! Can't wait for the sequel!

What I found was a part of our American history I really knew nothing about. The story at moments angered me, how could we do that to American citizens. Then I understood, the fears of the unknown, the differences that may cause one to become fearful. I may not agree with how things were handled, however, I can say the book was well written and the story beautifully told. I know Courageous Footsteps is a historical fiction and embellished to make it flow, yet, I am happy I took the time to read it and will recommend it to others.

"How is this possible?" These words will not leave my thoughts and my heart anytime soon. They are compelling me to think outside of my comfortable and privileged life about so many people--past, present, and future--and the courage and strength it must take to live every day in the throws of injustice, hardship, and loss. This book is more than a good read. It is a great book for discussion and for action.
