It's The eleventh novel in the award-winning Honor Series of historical maritime fiction. January 1889. German and American naval forces are engaged in an escalating confrontation in Samoa in the South Pacific. Warships are at battle stations. Naval reinforcements from both nations are on the way. The press in Berlin, Hamburg, Washington, and San Francisco is calling for national honor to be defended. At any minute, open warfare may erupt. All it will take is one spark. President Grover Cleveland orders Commander Peter Wake, Office of Naval Intelligence, to clandestinely accomplish one of two things: either somehow prevent all-out war between Germany and America, or win it decisively at the outset to prevent combat from spreading worldwide. Coming up with an admittedly makeshift plan along the way, Wake enlists the help of an unlikely trio he encounters in the Pacific: a Hawaiian artillery officer, a renegade Methodist minister, and a beautiful widow. Unfortunately for Wake―and unbeknownst to him―each of them has his or her own motives for heading to Samoa. If he fails, thousands across the world will die. It is a dilemma right out of today’s headlines: When do you cross the line of civilized behavior to potentially save lives? How do you live with the consequences? Amidst this dilemma, Wake decides to employ a repulsive tactic that results in horror for a member of his team, something he will regret for the rest of his life. The intrigue is as deadly as the action in this novel, which culminates in one of the most significant events in Pacific―and American―naval history.

I am a history buff and really enjoy reading about the War Between the States. This is where the series starts and slowly follows the Navy's ups and downs thru the live of Wake. History is "spot on" and stories are excellent. If you haven't read any of these, start from the beginning!!!

Honors Rendered - Another Macomber Home Run By jerome j. burke Bob Macomber has hit another home run with "Honors Rendered", the eleventh book in his "Honor" series documenting the professional life of Commander Peter Wake. Wake became a Union naval officer during the Civil War. Staying in the Navy after the war, he became the first professional naval intelligence officer. The "Honor" series describes Wake's exploits, first during he Civil War in southwest Florida, and then, after the war, worldwide as the United States and its Navy transitioned from an inwardly focused agricultural and commercial presence in the western hemisphere to a worldwide competitor of the British, the French, the Spanish and the Germans.Macomber sets this novel as a personal memoir of Commander Wake, found in a trunk many years after his death in Key West, Florida. It takes but a few pages for the reader to feel as if this were so. It is 1889, and the Germans have set about expanding the German empire into the South Pacific and Samoa specifically. There the Germans have deployed a modern, steel hulled naval squadron which supplies the muscle behind Berlin's political and commercial designs. The antiquated, diminutive post-Civil War U.S. Navy - comprised of wooden hulls, sails and smooth bore cannons - is no match for the Germans. Wake's mission, given him in person in the Old Executive Office Building by President Grover Cleveland and the Secretary of the Navy, is to offset the adverse maritime balance - all by himself - and either prevent an impending war from starting or, should conflict begin there in Samoa, win it for the U.S. and its Navy decisively. And, by the way, he is to do so with "plausible deniability" - he is entirely on his own were his cover as a Canadian investor to be blown by the Germans. The South Pacific is an area of the world most of us know only through Rogers and Hammerstein, James Michener or "Victory at Sea". Having lived and traveled this vast region to research this book, Macomber describes in vivid detail Wake's exploits to accomplish the mission. We see in Wake's first person the geo-politics of Hawaii and the South Pacific in the late 1880s. Macomber's descriptions, character development, and pace are riveting. "Honors Rendered" is a gripping narrative that engages the reader from Introduction. Its only fault is that the novel is 340 pages too short. Most highly recommended.J.J.Burke, Captain U.S. Navy (Retired)

Horrors!!!!! He has finished the kindle series & is now waiting for the Kindle version of the next book. Every morning he recounts last night's chapter so vividly, that I can see the mist hanging over the mountains of Samoa and hear the splash of the waves hitting the ship.We have learned more history from this series than we learned in school! Now when we go to a location mentioned in the book, we visit all the sights mentioned . Who knew that our favorite restaurant in Key West restuarant was the home of Cuban hero Jose Marti!!!?Like a puppy wanders the back yard, distracted by butterflies or sounds, I find myself ,puppy-like, wandering through this series, learning new factswhich lead to more facts which leads to ....Do you know who wrote the wonderful song, Guantanemara? I do now! Thanks, Robert.
