Review This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer -- Raymond Chandler

About the Author Deemed ‘the father of the scientific detective story’, Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman’s place amongst the finest of crime writers.

Heady mix of adventure, romance and mystery By Patto This Dr. Thorndyke novel might just be my favorite so far.Much of the action takes place on the Gold Coast of Africa, and on the high seas. Freeman draws on his experiences in colonial Africa to make this a particularly vivid and exciting novel. He served in the colonial service as a ship's surgeon and was involved in a diplomatic mission. His colorful career was ended by a bad case of backwater fever, and he was sent home to England to recuperate. In other words, Freeman had a full spectrum of African adventures, as does the hero of this book.John Osborne is a young gentleman who has left England "under a cloud." He settles in Adaffia, an ends-of-the-earth type of town on the Gold Coast. Almost immediately he gets into a fight defending the only other white man in town, a drunken trader. And we see that Osborne is a tremendous fighter skilled at ju-jitsu, boxing, wrestling - and strategy. These skills will come into play again and again, in a mutiny, a rebellion and other struggles with formidable opponents. His adventures at one point throw him into the company of a willful young lady who has an appetite for danger, and she and Osborne fall in love. But their love seems doomed, for Osborne is a fugitive.Meanwhile back in England, "a certain Dr. Thorndyke" is investigating the crime that Osborne is supposed to have committed. This second half of the book is just as much fun as the first, involving bizarre searches for clues and meticulous examinations of minutiae, from mustache hairs to wormwood dust.So this is a book with two heroes - the buccaneer-like Osborne and the obsessively scientific Thorndyke - as well as a charming, clever heroine. A Certain Dr. Thorndyke is a reading experience rich in thrills, dry British humor, and forensic marvels.

By Amazon Customer This is really two books in one.Half the book is dedicated to the adventures ofthe a Mr. Oswald who is come to Africa to hideout for a time. The othe half of the book is Thorndyke's investigation of a robbery of valuable jewels. The way that Freeman begins with the adventures that Oswald goes through is really different because these chapters can almost be read as a really well written adventure book. And then there is Thorndyke and Polton.Really well written and wonderful characters...

The action adventure is fast-paced and credible. The romance is a bit overdone, but of its time. The detection is all meticulous questioning and investigation. I find both parts delightful in their way.
