A hermit finds an outlaw, who gives his name only as John, dying at the forest's edge. He nurses John back to health and in return, John tells him Robin Hood's true story. Cursed by chance, he hunts the King's deer as a wolf when the full moon rises, and leads a pack of shape-changers like himself who worship the goddess of the woodlands. He wins Marian’s love when she escapes prison, shoots in the great archery contest where the prize is a werewolf-killing silver arrow, struggles with the vengeful Sheriff of Nottingham and the berserker Guy of Gisbourne, and at last dies...only to be reborn. But one question remains—who is John, and what dark enemy still watches him from the forest, waiting for a chance to strike?

Surprising Twist on a Well-Loved Tale By Elizabeth Horton-Newton, Author As a reader who grew up loving Robin Hood and stories of his adventures with his Merry Men in Sherwood Forest I began "Robin Hood: Wolf's Head with more than a touch of suspicion. I wondered if a modern writer could capture the excitement and appeal of the characters I loved. Eric Tanafon has definitely injected new life into these worthy characters and added a twist that makes the stories jump out of the pages. From the very beginning, when John encounters the mysterious woman in the forest, I was hooked. However it is when the unconscious John is found in the forest by a hermit that the story truly picks up. Regaining consciousness for a few minutes John is able to give some hint of his identity to the hermit. When John once again becomes conscious he begins to slowly relate his story to the hermit. It is to Tanafon’s credit that he uses this style of story-telling without having the pace slow or the book become dull. Instead what he has created is a vibrant and fascinating new take on the Merry Men and life in Sherwood Forest. Without revealing too much, the tale revolves around the surprising twist of shape-changing heroes. Robin and his band have the added advantage (and sometimes disadvantage) of being able to assume the shapes of wolves. As the hermit listens to John’s story he is somewhat skeptical. Somewhat shocked by what is a pagan lifestyle the hermit faces his own dilemma; kill the werewolf or continue to hear the compelling story. This is a lively book that captures the attention of the reader and manages what could have been an unbelievable spin on a well loved story. I highly recommend it for any reader who enjoys good, well written fantasy.I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book By Kat Mandu Reviews You think you know the story of Robin Hood – but you’d be wrong.Kat Mandu says…In this series of stories within a story, Tanafon twists a new tale about Robin Hood and his gang, giving them shape- shifting abilities and endless loyalty to each other. Each story is recounted by John (and no, not Little John), a man from Robin Hood’s group who finds himself under the care of a hermit after a mysterious enemy injures him. As John tells the Hermit ballads of his epic journeys and adventures, the Hermit has to wonder if killing John – a pagan – is worth the effort, or if keeping him alive is a worse fate.I loved this book, so it earns a shiny four. The characters are great and I like retellings with engaging plots. Each story goes in depth with favorite characters in the Robin Hood universe and weaves tantalizing tales of suspense, love, and faith. Though some parts were a bit slow and cliché, I nevertheless enjoyed reading it.

A New Spin on an Old Legend By Fantasy Book Lane A member of Robin's band of merry men sits down with a hermit to set the record straight about the legends of Robin Hood.I'm a big fan of all things Robin Hood, so I was already predisposed to liking this book. Where this story differs greatly from other Robin Hood re-tellings (at least the one's I've read) is that it introduces the idea that Robin and his men (and women) were werewolves. And they aren't the overdone, Hollywood-type werewolves that honestly get on my nerves. These are werewolves who operate under their own rules among the forest, true to the spirit of Robin Hood. I'll admit, adding such a paranormal element could have gone very wrong, and I was a little skeptical at first. But it only took me a few pages to jump on board with this, and it worked out surprisingly well. The writing throughout is top notch. The author doesn't dwell on descriptions, rather adding them in an almost casual way. The narrative flows easily, and I felt fully immersed at the hermit's home as well as in the greenwood. The dialogue is also fantastic. The banter between John and the hermit, and between Robin and his men, is incredibly natural. Having one character tell stories while the other listens doesn't always work, and the dialogue could have become boring. But it doesn't! I was very impressed how the author made the back and forth flow. This isn't a big Q&A like I've seen in high fantasy (an overused method of giving backstory that becomes quite boring). The tales told by John flow without interruption, presented like short stories of their own. This could be considered a series of short stories, strung together by the interactions of John and the hermit. The hermit's inner struggles were also a nice touch. He doesn't know what to believe, or how he should react to someone who proclaims to be a werewolf. It goes against what he believes as a man of faith, but he's intrigued and open-minded enough to accept John and listen to his tales. Both characters are nicely developed and well-rounded.All of my Robin Hood favorites are present: Robin, Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale, Marian, Tuck, and of course the evil sheriff among others. This book is delightful, and I don't just say that as a Robin Hood fangirl. As a fan of good writing, great characters, and fun action scenes, I highly recommend this book. I had a great time reading, and I suspect many others will as well.I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

By Rebecca Maney "A woman who kept her word would surely keep her vows", wouldn't she? . . . . . wonders the man who cannot decide about marrying someone who has admittedly made some mistakes when it comes to love. And the woman in question has plenty of reasons to doubt a man who drove his mail-order bride of only seven months straight into the arms of another. Doesn't she?Silas Jonesy and Kate Dawson meet under the strangest of circumstances. Silas has responded to a letter from his unknown-to-him -dying wife, while Kate has not only befriended Lucinda Riverton Jonesy, but has voluntarily made sure that her young son is well cared for during his mother's extended illness. When Anthony Riverton's mother quietly passes away, Silas is confronted with a second man claiming to be Anthony's biological father. Kate finds no reason to release the boy to either man, but when a judge makes the final decision and Anthony disappears, Kate and Silas spend days searching for him, ultimately realizing that they have much more in common than a lonely, frightened little boy. Unfortunately, they also discover some possibly insurmountable differences."A Bride at Last" has a clever, intriguing beginning and a "boots and bottles" scene near the ending which was deeply emotional and brilliantly written. Add interesting town folks and numerous "sparks-flying" conversations and this historical read has much to offer any admirer of inspirational fiction. I am grateful to the author for an advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy) I was expecting a simple mail-order-bride where the a women goes out west and and falls in love with a troubled man, but that isn't exactly what I got here. The story here is set in my home state of Missouri, where the main characters, Silas and Kate, have already both tried to find love through mail-order-bride way and both failed. I wasn't for sure if I was going to like the book, but by the fifth chapter I was hooked into the plot and quickly finished reading it. Overall, A Bride At Last is a well-written romantic tale with a few surprises here and there.I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is the fourth offering in her "Unexpected Bride Series" and in my humble opinion, it is her best yet.The story begins in Missouri in September 1885 where we meet schoolteacher Kate Dawson, the heroine of the story, and her student Anthony Riverton. In time we meet homesteader Silas Jonesey, the story's hero. I must say he is definitely swoon-worthy. The picture on the cover of both characters serve them well.I want so much to tell you everything about this wonderful story but I never give out spoilers. I can tell you this, there are mysteries hidden within the covers of this book. While it is a historical love story, the reader is drawn into a story that has a few twists and turns that lead the reader deeper into the story. If I had had the time, I would have read this book in one sitting. As it is, once I began reading I lost all track of time and when I had to pull myself out of the story I was quite reluctant to do so.This is a story about forgetting old hurts, learning to trust, and reaching out to others. The characters in this book were so lifelike that they became real to me and I truly hated to see them go. There are times when I finish a book I begin to wonder after I finish what happened next. Of course I have to remind myself it is just a story. But in A Bride at Last, Ms. Jagears offers the reader an Epilogue that allows us to see eight years into the future. I truly appreciated being given that gift.Would I suggest this book to others? Definitely. I would suggest it to anyone who loves a good clean love story. The Christian theme that flows throughout the book is not overpowering but adds to the story quite nicely. On a 5-Star Scale - 5 HUGE Stars!!!!!I would like to thank Ms. Jagears and Bethany House for my copy of A Bride at Last. I received my copy for free in order to read it and give my honest review, which I have done.

The intoxicating new novel of magic and intrigue by “a master storyteller” (Cosmopolitan), for fans of The Night Circus and Water for Elephants

Over the course of three decades of writing, bestselling novelist Rosie Thomas has earned an untold number of awards and the devotion of millions of loyal readers. Her new novel, The Illusionists, set in London in 1870, is a thrilling step forward―a captivating tale of passion and fantasy set in the theater world. At the start of The Illusionists, we meet Eliza, a young, beautiful woman of limited means. Eliza is modern before her time. Not for her the stifling if respectable conventionality of marriage, children, domestic drudgery. She longs for more. Through her work as an artist’s model, she meets the magnetic and irascible Devil―a born showman whose dream is to run his own theater company. Devil’s right-hand man is the improbably-named Carlo Bonomi, an ill-tempered dwarf with an enormous talent for all things magic and illusion. Carlo and Devil clash at every opportunity and it constantly falls upon Eliza to broker an uneasy peace between them. And then there is Jasper Button. Mild-mannered, and a family man at heart, it is his gift as an artist that makes him the unlikely final member of the motley crew. Thrown together by a twist of fate, their lives are inextricably linked: the fortune of one depends on the fortune of the other. And as Eliza gets sucked into the seductive and dangerous world her strange companions inhabit, she risks not only her heart, but also her life, which is soon thrown into peril.

The Illusionists: A Novel, by Rosie Thomas

Review “Beneath this buoyant tale of down-market entertainers in Victorian London rumbles a heavyweight novel . . . As intricate and thrilling as any accomplished bit of conjuring.” (The New York Times)“Gripping . . . Rosie Thomas ably captures the magic of Victorian London―including its spectacular advancements in technology, such as the phonograph, electric lighting and automata―yet she does not neglect the seamy, hardscrabble life so prevalent among theatrical performers.” (Shelf Awareness)“Thomas’s sprawling follow-up to The Kashmir Shawl combines several elements: a story of a theater company, a thriller, and, most successfully, a portrait of a woman trying to create an equal partnership with a man . . . The heart of the book is Eliza’s long, slow attempt to not only marry Devil but to live in parity with him. Since she has no models for the relationship she wants, Thomas shows Eliza working to invent a new kind of life; a creation as novel for her time as the mechanical illusions at the Palmyra. ” (Publishers Weekly)“This character driven novel is filled with odd and unusual characters whose personalities and quirks are revealed as the story progresses. . . . The story-line is compelling for its vivid descriptions and fascinating characters who are anything but normal and predictable . . . Definitely, an entertaining read that stands out for its unique qualities.” (Historical Novels Review)“While the background details on stage magic and the theater business are captivating, Devil and Eliza’s ardent love story is the book’s emotional heart, and the ever-changing connections among all its intriguing performers fill it with genuine life and vitality.” (Booklist)“Rosie Thomas has the rare and wonderful ability to create stories and characters that take you instantly into another world.” (Penny Vincenzi - Praise for the work of Rosie Thomas)“Thomas writes with a sharp nib, not a dull computer key. She is neither mawkish nor squeamish, but full of fresh images.” (Washington Post Book World - Praise for the work of Rosie Thomas)“A master storyteller. ” (Cosmopolitan - Praise for the work of Rosie Thomas)“Thomas’s novels are beautifully written.” (Marie Claire - Praise for the work of Rosie Thomas)“Thomas can write with ravishing sensuality.” (The Times - Praise for the work of Rosie Thomas)

About the Author Rosie Thomas is the author of numerous critically acclaimed, bestselling novels, and has twice won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award. Born in a small village in northern Wales, Thomas discovered a love of traveling and mountaineering when her children were grown. In the years since, she has climbed in the Alps and the Himalayas, competed in the Peking to Paris car rally, and trekked in the footsteps of Shackleton on South Georgia Island.

I must say the setting feels authentic and the characters are very complex, but alas, I didn't find the protagonist, Devil, very sympathetic. Moreover, the plot plods along. This novel hovers between popular and literary fiction, but the slow development doesn't serve either. After a fast start, I found this effort tedious.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fairly entertaining Victorian melodrama - but 100 pages too long By Alan A. Elsner This story set in the late 19th century in London brings us a love affair between two unusual individuals. Devil Wix is a self-made entertainer determined to claw his way to the top of his profession armed with little other than his personal charisma and drive. Eliza Dunlop, daughter to a lower middle class family of limited means, is a young lady of remarkable independence who also wants a career in the theater. These two gather around themselves an oddball collection of characters -- a talented dwarf Carlo, a very weird Swiss engineer who manufactures automatons which he believes are almost human and a couple of others. They form the group "The Illusionists" and perform incredible magic tricks at the half-derelict Palmyra Theater.Wix is a natural gambler and trickster and stakes everything he has on winning control of the theater. The scene in which he plays for the prize is appropriately dramatic. The plot meanders along in an interesting enough way, held together by the sexual attraction between Wix and Eliza. There are many plot strands that are whirled into the air like a juggler's balls. Not all are pursued or resolved. But the book loses its way badly after Devil and Eliza finally find each other and the final 100 pages are totally extraneous and badly detract from the novel as a whole. A good editor would have chopped them off and ended the book at its natural ending point. What we're left with is an interminable coda.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Falls flat after the first third By Jojoleb The Illusonists: a Novel, by Rosie Thomas, follows a scrappy band of up and coming magicians who wish to conquer the entertainment scene in Victorian era London. I really loved the overall look and feel of the novel and enjoyed the first third of the book, where the characters are introduced and their plan starts to come together. And I really wanted to like it more than I did: it was always readable, but the book suffers from odd choices in character development and a slow pace that drags the book down.As the book progresses, mystery and intrigue are replaced with the hum of daily life, a linear plot, and occasional random jolts that fail to shock the reader because they are too out of place. Thomas makes contrived character development choices that strip her characters of interest. Friends inexplicably turn into enemies or interesting characters simply fall flat. For example, the main character Devil Wix starts off as a down and out, mysterious rogue. Wix's success is too sudden, his mysteriousness is too quickly revealed, and all we are left with by the end of the book all that is left of his roguishness is his roving eye for women. Eliza, who starts off as a headstrong, independent woman becomes hobbled and marginalized by mid novel. Even the dialogue degrades becoming banal and stilted.Avenues for the plot that seemed like interesting possibilities--such as a tie in with the White Chapel murders--are hinted at but never seem to transpire. There is also a near-rape scene that I found detestable. I won't reveal the exact circumstances, but end of that scene was not only implausible but disturbing in a way that was certainly not intended. Carlo Bonomi, the cantankerous dwarf who is truly a master illusionist, should have had a stronger presence throughout the book. Bonomi is truly a complex character and his initial interactions with Wix suggest an interesting relationship that is both a friendship and a rivalry. However, after Bonomi's initial burst onto the scene, Thomas banishes him into the background by keeping him infirmed or reducing him to being simply cantankerous. And of course, there are the illusions. If this were a play or a movie, the illusions might have elicited major oohs and ahs. In a book, of course, it is far more difficult to convey the wonder of a stage trick unless you can get your readers into that zone where they are actually seeing what you write. When David Copperfield pulls off a major illusion in front of a live audience, you really get the wow factor. On a movie screen, you know they can use visual tricks and CGI, but you still get an amazing visual that allows you to suspend your disbelief. But when you are writing, you can't amaze me by just telling me what I'm supposed to be seeing. If I write that I just made an elephant (poof. applause.) appear in your living room, it's not all that convincing. Some of the illusions Thomas described are fairly complex. In just describing what it was supposed to look like, I never got that magical feeling that the audience was supposed to ge and just figuring out what Thomas intended it to look like on stage was in and of itself a bit of a mind bender. This was not all bad, however. In spite of the flaws, the characters were drawn up well enough in the first third of the book. I actually cared about them enough to want to read the book to its finish. Thomas has a good eye for scenery and does a much better job on some of her secondary characters. Sadly there was not enough here for me to recommend that you buy this book, but it wouldn't be a bad one to check out from the library if you want to pass the time.

After the dance was concluded, the whole party was entertained with brawn and beef, and stout home-brewed. The Squire himself mingled among the rustics, and was received with awkward demonstrations of deference and regard. -from "Christmas Day" Warmly convivial and delightfully festival, this charming and long forgotten holiday classic, by one of American literature's most beloved writers, was inspired, in part, by Dickens' A Christmas Carol and other celebrations of oldtime Yule. Splendid suppers and rural churches, cheerful dances and hearty spirits imbue this short novel with the magic of the season. This festive work, first published in 1896, deserves to be a holiday tradition alongside Dickens in the celebrations of the winter solstice. American author WASHINGTON IRVING (1783-1859) wrote extensively in the areas of history and historical biography but is best known for his short fiction, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

From the war-torn Jordan Valley to our nation’s capital, Exiles reaches into the life of one man and one woman to explore one of the longest-lasting and most painful situations in our time: the displacement of the Palestinians and the unceasing turmoil in the Middle East. This is a story about the search and battle for identity of a people who have paid the price of no peace in the land of the Bible, who are expected to pay a debt to the dead and disinherited, and who are fated to act out decisions made by others long ago.   When Harry Mann arrives in Amman for a tour of diplomatic duty in 1969, he finds a nation heading for upheaval and he sets about to put it right. His Chicana wife, Mercedes, fresh out of an alcoholic treatment center, is discontent to play the empty and unfulfilling role of a Foreign Service Officer’s wife. She is, in many ways, as displaced a person as are the Palestinian refugees who now life in Jordan.   Nabil Dajani is one of those Palestinians who now serves as Minister of Public Works in King Hussein’s cabinet. Like Mercedes, he is a man in great conflict: torn by the inner struggle between his liberal, internationalist outlook and the confines of traditional and provincial Islamic fundamentalism. Alienated from his wife, it is only a matter of time before he and Mercedes seek, in one another, some solace for their discontents.   In its careful evocation, Exiles transports us to a land that resonates with ancient majesty and today’s heartaches and joys. One reads not only to discover the fate of its characters, but also to gain a growing understanding of the complex changes occurring in the Islamic world.

Exiles, by M. Cruz

From Publishers Weekly If this nation can survive its own Foreign Serviceas it is portrayed here from an insider's jaundiced perspective (Cruz is, we are told, the wife of an American diplomat)it can survive anything. The scene opens in 1969 in Vientiane, where Harry Mann, a career diplomat, is preparing for transfer to Amman. Mercedes, his wisecracking, fast-talking Chicana wife, tries playfully to knife him for maligning her to her best friend (whose own little escapades include flings with some generals, a couple of Presidents and a papal nuncio). Harry has described Mercedes as "wacky," "crazy," a "total space case,"all because she's a riotous drunkard who requires periodic drying-out. Once in Amman, Mercedes, now on the wagon, meets Nabil, a minister in Hussein's cabinet, and it is something else at first sight. As a Chicana, she is an "exile," and as a Palestinian "refugee" in Jordan, so is he, a technocrat suspended between the ancient tribal ethos and the modern world. Their protracted affair, on which the narrative focus is fixed, comes finally to naught. By turns the novel is amusing and irritating, shrewd and ingenuous, serious and frivolous to the point of silly slapstick. One must decry some serious lapses in judgment and tact on the part of a talented writer. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Americans living in foreign lands as dependents of diplomats walk a fine line to avoid infringing on local customs. It's especially hard when the host country is volatile Jordan and the diplomat's wife is an extravangantly temperamental Chicana with a taste for alcohol. When she is attracted to a Moslem bureaucrat who's close to the King, her husband nudges her to do some informal data gathering. Mercedes sparkes an answering glint in the minister's heart, and by a miracle of coincidence, the two get to spend a passionate week in Washington, D.C. Because the author successfully frames the lovers as emotional exiles yearning for a safe harbor, the affair is really an exploration of the harsh contradictions of marriage, friendship, and personal identity in a violent age. The author, herself a wife stationed in an Arab land, conveys these feelings with affecting lucidity and colorful authenticity. The Queen of Sheba is a must Read By Joe Gaboury Mattie's depiction of the Queen of Sheba was conceived out of her desire for an intimate relationship with God. I love how she revealed the spirit of the Queen of Sheba. She did not just tell about her but brought her to life in a way that will delight those who read about her. You better start this one early in the day cause you will not want to put it down. Well done Mattie.

It is full of details of what life must have been like for those living in the day of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, and also includes some fascinating additional recent archaeological finds in her afterward. The story is riveting as well as thought provoking. But what I love above all else is that this book is full of bits of wisdom that apply to our lives even today. On page 39 a brief conversation was like a word of counsel to me in a current day relationship, "Always remember, my love, that you need not know the answers for her. Your love for her is your gift. You are a strength and constant reminder to her that she is not alone." And of course the words of Solomon are full of wisdom, and many are taken straight out of the scriptures. Mattie has also described quite poignantly the deep intimate delight found in experiencing the presence of a powerful yet loving God in a way that only someone who has walked in living faith can do. This is a book you can safely throw yourself into whole-heartedly without reservation. Expect to be blessed!

She masterfully combines her biblical and historic knowledge with her understanding of humanity around the characters Queen of Sheba, King Solomon and his God Jehovah. The Queen's complicated character is well developed. Living in the pagan world of Sheba she rules over a wealthy land. Gradually news of King Solomon and more importantly the God Jehovah fill her soul with only the Joy that comes from the Lord. The author then creatively pulls the King & Queen together in Jerusalem after an adventure filled caravan journey across the desert. No doubt the bible chapter "Song of Solomon" was written for His Queen of Sheba".Reading this book was truly inspiring.

The book tells the story through the protagonist's dealings with the animals at the farm. Sometimes everyday life is the most interesting thing one can write about. In stories from everyday life we see and examine ourselves in light of what we encounter. This story is like that. A great story.
