Her search leads to an unlikely alliance with Mr. Keegan, friendship with freed blacks, learning to read and write, and the choices to change her life, on her own terms.

I love reading stories about people and places I have no experience with, and through "Pearl" I was plunged into the world of an 18th century slave as she travels from her native Barbados to England in search of her brother. I loved the character of Pearl and her relationship with her employer, especially since it did not at all take the predictable turns of most slave/master relationships in fiction. It was moving, fast-paced, and incredibly well written. Perfect for a rainy afternoon or the beach.

This book surpassed my expectations in almost every way. Ms. Athy was wonderful in building characters, writing dialogues, scene setting, and world building. She weaved a compelling and thoughtful narrative – about a spunky lady’s maid traversing from Barbados to England in search of her identity, personhood, voice, and her brother – without any cliches to boot. Her deft writing skills brought Pearl’s story to life with very turn of the page. I could not put down this book until the very end and even then I was left wanting more.

I couldn't put it down and stayed up late to finish it in one sitting! Pearl is a wonderful character and I agree with another review I read of this story - once you finish it, you too will find you miss the main character. I wish the book could have been longer!
