By Christian Fiction and More In this second book in The Southold Chronicles we once again enter the lives of the Horton family and their many friends, this time during the year of 1653. Benjamin Horton, the second oldest son, is in love with his childhood friend, Heather Flower. Heather Flower, princess of the Montaukett tribe, struggles with her emotions following the rescue from her kidnappers who killed her groom on their wedding day. Benjamin understands her need for time to heal, but worries about the intentions of her rescuer, Dutch Lieutenant Dirk Van Buren who also has eyes for the lovely princess. Through the telling of Benjamin’s story, DeMarino reveals the bond between the members of the Horton family and their dearest friends. She opens a window for her readers to see how the English and their native neighbors learned from, supported and depended upon one another. I found the descriptions of how daily chores and winter preparations were accomplished fascinating, and how bits of free time were spent inspirational. I am anxious to try Mrs. Horton’s recipe for pippin [apple] pie. The story moves at a slow, relaxed pace, and will appeal to readers who like characters to be fully developed. It will be less appealing to those who prefer being kept in suspense, steep climaxes and lots of action. The author was inspired by her own family’s history in the settling of what would become Long Island, and fans of historical fiction will appreciate the research behind her writing. While I don’t always read an author’s acknowledgements section, this time I did. When reading the author’s comments about her father, Howard M. Worley, who authored his first book at the age of eighty-nine, I was reminded of an article I had recently read in Guideposts magazine. Sure enough I flipped through and found Rebecca DeMarino’s article about her father’s writing and how it was impacted by a heart attack in the May, 2015 issue! The article demonstrates that Rebecca’s own family has a strong support system, maybe being what inspired the same among her fictional Horton family. I thank Revell Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for providing To Capture Her Heart for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

To Capture Her Heart by Rebecca DeMarino By Tina Rice To Capture Her Heart***** book 2 Southold Chronicles by Rebecca Worley DeMarinoHeather Flower, a princess of the Montaukett tribe, is celebrating her wedding feast when tragedy struck as a rival tribe attacks and kills her husband, taking her captive. After her ransom was paid she was bound and left to die by her captives—until Dutch Lieutenant Dirk Van Buren comes and rescues her. Staying with her aunt and with the help of English friends—Horton family—Heather Flower is recovering from her ordeal and grieving the loss of her husband. Two men compete for her heart, longtime friend Benjamin Horton and Lt. Dirk. How does she choose between these two honorable men?Even though I have not read the first book in this series, A Place in His Heart, I was able to get a feel for the relationships of the characters in the story. There is much to like about this book, the real-to-life characters face challenges much like we do today. However, since this is set in 1653, there are many challenges they faced unique to the time and Rebecca DeMarino described those challenges well. I especially liked the in-depth descriptions of the bead work Heather Flower used to create beautiful items and the wampum’s. I liked the historical aspect of the story, which included the conflict between the different tribes as well as between the English and the Dutch. I could feel how hard the decision Heather Flower faced was in choosing one of the men who loved her, or choosing another path and her desire to follow God's leading in whichever path she choose. I found myself going back and forth between Ben and Dirk, and which one would she ultimately choose. I knew who I wanted her to pick, the ending was an unexpected surprise. The secondary characters are an important part of the story-line and the way their lives intertwine together. This story is full of drama, adventure, grief, joy, hardships, tragedies, triumphs, love, strong faith woven throughout the story and so much more to make this a fantastic story.~I won a copy of this book on Colonial Quills Tea Party and author, this is my honest review~

Review from Rambles of a SAHM By Amazon Customer The book that began this series, A Place in His Heart, was the first book that I read by Rebecca DeMarino. It was a fascinating tale about the journey to the New World with Barnabas and Mary Horton. To Capture Her Heart picks up the story several years later when the colony is well established and their son Ben is a grown man thinking of settling down. He's recently been dumped by his intended so now he is determined to win the affection of his childhood friend Heather Flower. When the story begins we are swept up into the rescue of Heather Flower by Dutch Lieutenant Dirk Van Buren. While everyone is grateful that Dirk was able to rescue Heather Flower he is still Dutch and most of the townspeople don't trust him. But right away he captures Heather Flowers affection much to the irritation of Ben.As the story moves along the author continues to give us a bit of insight into the beginnings of our great nation. It's easy to romanticize it all but even after leaving the persecution and establishing a colony there were many obstacles to face and conquer.I enjoyed the continuing story of the characters that we met in A Place in His Heart. I also look forward to the third book in the series. There's a sneak peek in the back of the book that will make you wish it would hurry up and be published! Rebecca DeMarino does a splendid job of combining history and romance to keep the pages flying. When a book is part of a series I'm always asked if it can be read as a stand alone novel. The answer this time is probably but you'll be missing out on so many details from the first novel that I wouldn't recommend it. In my opinion I think you need to know the background of the Horton family to understand some of the dynamics going on. I say just treat yourself and read both books . . . and then pick up the third when it is out!I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Captain Barney, daring privateer and officer in the infant United States Navy, was a man who could have walked in the footsteps of John Paul Jones. Great hero in the victories over the British Navy that turned the tide finally in favor of the Americans, his exciting private life was as full-bodied and fascinating as his fighting career on the high seas. Jan Westcott's absorbing recreation dramatizes also the story of Lady Douglass Harris, the high-spirited, independent English woman for whom Barney risked his life ― and whose unconventional behavior often made him bitterly regret it. The story revolves around Philadelphia, where Barney lived, and Statia, an informal name for the little known Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius, that was the key American supply base for foreign war materials. The story intermingles romance, tensions, sailing ships with outwitting the enemy, and brings a stirring narrative sure to please Jan Westcott's fans.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. great historical book, once you get past society stereotypes By A Customer ...When my neighbor moved into a nursing home she got rid of a whole lot of things, and my brother gave me an old copy of this book that was going to be thrown out. It's written very accurately, and has enough action and even romance involved to keep you interested. Some parts can drag, but not for very long. The only thing that [upset] me was the way females were depicted, but then again, it takes place during the Revolutionary War, and that was the way women were supposed to be during that time. Even so, sometimes I wanted to just grab one of the main female characters, Lady Douglass, and tell her to decide things for herself, with her own ... mind. And now, a little about the book, since there's no real explanation:It centers around twenty-six year old Captain Benjamin Barney, an American privateer who (at the beginning) is in a British prison. After escaping, he meets up with the Virginian Joshua Harris (who's thirty), of Harris and Co., and his sister-in-law, the beautiful English widow Lady Douglass (who is twenty). Barney and Douglass become romantically involved, while Joshua pressures Barney into going back into privateering, something he is opposed to doing. And somewhere during that time, a seventeen-year-old French girl, Lucie, becomes Douglass's maid-servant, and a charming little romance between her and Joshua sprouts.Eventually Barney concedes to Joshua's suggestions, and sails for Stasia, a little island--practically lawless--in the Caribbean that is his "home-base"--for lack of a better word. A good amount of action occurs periodically, especially once Barney goes back to privateering, in command of the vessel "Athena." And the rest I won't say--don't want to give too much away. ;-)Overall, a great book in my opinion; the type that a member of either gender could read and be pleased with, though some women who like and are in support of a strong female character (like me) might be disappointed. But, like I said, if you can look around that, then you should enjoy it.

Review "Fantastic . . . Lansdale has pulled out all the stops to deliver a rip-roaring tale."―Paula L. Woods, Los Angeles Times"[A] breakout novel . . . Addictive fun . . . A rollicking ride that's suspenseful, hilarious and satisfyingly redemptive. . . . Lansdale at his funniest and most energetic, with some of the most engaging writing you'll read this year. . . . Lansdale has unleashed something remarkable."―Dwight Silverman, Houston Chronicle"Joe R. Lansdale takes on Nat Love and the legend of Deadwood Dick in his new novel, Paradise Sky, and hosannas should be sung to him for doing so. Paradise Sky is a remarkable achievement, an instant classic of Western lit. . . . It sometimes seems as if [Lansdale] has published around a thousand novels, and he, no doubt, will publish many more. Paradise Sky may well prove to be Lansdale's best."―W.K. Stratton, Dallas Morning News"A deftly told yarn. Everything about Paradise Sky is classic Western drama . . . You can almost smell the beans heating up on the campfire and see the rugged beauty of the frontier."―Evan Rodriguez, Austin American-Statesman"Lansdale is a master storyteller and this novel is a prime example of his talent. Paradise Sky is at times exciting, inspiring, surreal, and heartbreaking. In other words, the novel is true to life."―Josef Hernandez, Examiner.com"Beautiful literary prose . . . He fills each page with heartbreak, suspense, hope, and laughter."―Eric J. Guignard, New York Journal of Books"Folksy, cinematic . . . Lansdale is one of those very rare authors who can have his readers howling with laughter during one sentence while bringing tear to their eyes with the next."―BookReporterPRAISE FOR JOE LANSDALE:"Reading Joe Lansdale is like listening to a favorite uncle who just happens to be a fabulous storyteller."―Dean Koontz"Too often overlooked in American literature is that lineage descending from our early humorists such as Bierce, and from Twain: regional, darkly comic, bizarre. That's where Joe Lansdale lives. He's very Texan, very American, very funny--and a stone brilliant writer."―James Sallis, author of Drive

Wild West lollapalooza By Cheryl Stout Former slave young Willie Jackson started on this incredible misadventure by simply looking at the rear end of a married white woman. Her husband thought this was such a grievous crime that he spent years trying and sometimes succeeding in hurting Willie and killing the ones Willie loves. On the lam, Willie ends up being taken in by a man that teaches him to shoot plus many other needed life skills and Willie honors the man by taking part of his name and becoming Nat Love. This is the story of Nat's younger years, dodging the irate (read also crazy) husband, gaining friends and wisdom and the nickname of Deadwood Dick. This story, loosely based on the true-life adventures of Nat Love, is a romp, a lollapalooza, a wild tale full of names you've heard before (Wild Bill for one) with adventure, tragedy, and a heaping helping of the dark humor Lansdale is famous for.The characters are so vivid you would recognize them immediately if you ever met them. Lansdale's dialogue, full of patois, is a pleasure to read. The descriptions of the countryside and the people of the Wild West are colorful and even educational.Joe Lansdale is the writer I'd like to be stuck on a desert island with. I am quite sure that he would have enough stories to tell so that neither of us would ever feel the want of entertainment. He is a storyteller extraordinaire. And since I'd rather read a good book than eat, food on the isle wouldn't be my first consideration either. (Of course, Lansdale might have other ideas on who he'd rather be stuck with.)He has written some of my very favorite books of all time - A FINE, DARK LINE; THE BOTTOMS; and THE THICKET. I don't rate PARADISE SKY quite as high as those treasured reads but it definitely is well worth reading.NOTE: I was lucky enough to get this book from Mulholland Books through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. PARADISE SKY is an unblinking and unvarnished look at a rough-edged time and place in US history By Bookreporter I first stumbled upon Joe R. Lansdale’s work in a volume of an anthology series titled Night Visions, which was published by Dark Harvest, a gone-but-not-forgotten horror imprint that I miss to this day. Lansdale remains with us, sustaining a writing output that sacrifices neither quality nor quantity while cutting across and through popular genres like a well-honed sword through soft cotton. I will confess to being unable to keep up with him, given his penchant for writing novels, short stories and graphic novels with the same ability as we less mortals have mastered breathing. While his prose is marked well with grim humor, unflinching violence, and turns of phrase that you will never want to forget (where does he get all of those, anyway?), it is his characters who are by and large the most important element of his work. This is especially true in his latest novel, which also happens to be one of his best.PARADISE SKY is a deceptive name for a rough-edged book such as this, but if you feared that perhaps Lansdale had turned his hand to writing romances, you need not fear. While the book does have its rough-hewn romantic moments, it is a full-blooded western, served up unapologetically and masterfully Lansdale-style and set in the 1870s. Think of it as a dime novel within a dime novel, told in the voice of a popular historical figure --- one who, yes, actually existed --- who wants to set the fictional record straight. The nation is still reeling from the effects of the Civil War, and resentments on both sides continue to boil over. One of those who gets burned is a 20-year-old man named Willie, who is in the wrong place --- rural Texas --- at a very wrong time. Young and black, Willie runs afoul of Sam Ruggert, an unpopular but nonetheless influential local property owner. Within just a few hours, everything and everyone Willie has ever cared about is gone, and he is on the run, pursued by Ruggert and a makeshift posse for hire. Willie, by chance, is able to take refuge with a man named Tate Loving, who shelters him for an extended period and, among other things, teaches him how to shoot --- and shoot extremely well.Willie changes his name to Nat Love and, after some misadventures in the Army as an Indian fighter, makes his way to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he finds employment as a bouncer and a kind of friendship with a legendary sharpshooter named Wild Bill Hickok. A shooting contest brings Nat into contact with a fellow sharpshooter and erstwhile author, who subsequently creates a dime novel character based on Nat called “Deadwood Dick.” Ruggert, however, has doggedly continued to pursue Nat; on what becomes the best and worst day of Nat’s life, he exacts a measure of revenge.Nat, down but not out, engages in his own pursuit of Ruggert, even as his own life course is forever altered once again. It becomes obvious that the cat-and-mouse chase that has continued for many years will end only when one or both of them are dead. But who will ultimately triumph, if anyone? And in what manner? That is the question that Nat ultimately answers here, noting, of course, that no one likes the dull parts.PARADISE SKY is an unblinking and unvarnished look at a rough-edged time and place in United States history, one that never becomes overburdened with the sorrow of tragic events while respecting the good times and recognizing their temporary nature. Lansdale is one of those very rare authors who can have his readers howling with laughter during one sentence while bringing tear to their eyes with the next. And for those who want more, Lansdale’s prodigious output --- and unique presentation --- has provided us with at least one other novel of Nat and his travels in a volume titled BLACK HAT JACK. There may be more. But try PARADISE SKY first.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

This book is a wonderful piece of fiction by a true American original. I won't rehash the plot as you can read the other reviews and the book summary for that. All I will say is that this book made me feel many emotions all the way through. I laughed, I smirked—I even shed a couple tears. That's what a good story does, it makes you feel. But hell, this story is great. Can't recommend it high enough. I'm proud of Joe for writing this one. It sits right up there with my favorites of his: The Bottoms, The Thicket, and Edge Of Dark Water.Put this next on your "To be read" list and buy a copy now. You won't regret it.

Katy Kippling has an abundance of personality, or so she was told by a recent male acquaintance. Trying to conform to the etiquette of an 1880’s lady is difficult enough, without adding the challenges of having an abundance of personality. Katy loves the Cana Island Lighthouse, serving her small lakeside town in Bailey’s Harbor, Wisconsin. In the summer of 1880, the new lighthouse keeper arrives. While Katy imagines his stately captain’s beard and noble brow, Blake Strawberry, the new keeper, is quite the opposite. Blake is a young man searching for something to heal the pain and heartaches of his past. By moving west and accepting this new position, he plans to forget all of his painful memories and disappointments. What he hasn’t counted on is that the Lord’s voice can be heard just as clearly in Wisconsin as in Massachusetts. Throughout the story, another character, Horatio Spafford and his beloved hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul,” play integral roles in the characters’ lives. Will Blake surrender to the message of this song and allow it to change his life, as it has changed the lives of those he loves? Will Katy move beyond her tangible child-like faith, and trust that her Heavenly Father can truly make her soul well, even when she doesn’t understand His ways? And will Blake and Katy relinquish the control they have on their own lives, allowing the Lord to work in His time and in His perfect way-understanding that His ways are not always our ways.

March 1880, Limehouse.

Kitty Peck, a spirited but vulnerable seventeen-year-old, is the reluctant heiress to Paradise, the criminal empire previously overseen by the formidable Lady Ginger. Far from the colour and camaraderie of the music hall where Kitty had been working, this newfound power brings with it isolation and uncertainty. Desperate to reconnect with Joey, her estranged brother, Kitty travels to Paris. Reunited at last, she is unable to refuse his request to take a child back to London. Within days of her return it's clear that someone has followed them... and this someone is determined to kill the child... and anyone who stands in their way.

Kitty Peck and the Child of Ill-Fortune is a fast-paced historical mystery with breath-taking twists and turns that takes us from the decadent, bohemian world of late 19th-Century Paris to a deadly secret at the heart of the British empire.

About the Author Kate Griffin was born within the sound of Bow bells, making her a true-born cockney. Kitty Peck and the Music Hall Murders, Kate's first book, won the Stylist/Faber crime writing competition and was shortlisted for the CWA Endeavour Historical Dagger. Kate's maternal family lived in Victorian Limehouse and her grandmother told her many stories of life around the docks. Kate lives in St Albans.

I thought this was by another "Kate Griffin", who has written books set in Victorian London. Oh well, take each book on its merits and review accordingly ...Kitty Peck has just chosen to take on the criminal enterprise centred on the Limehouse docks previously run by her grandmother, the formidable Lady Ginger. But as she comes to grips with her new responsibilities and awaits her first meeting with her fellow lords of crime, a subplot arises involving her not-dead-after-all brother and his dodgy friends, a baby boy and a secret people will kill to conceal.I'm rather lukewarm on this book. It was exciting in parts, but it wasn't interesting enough to grab me from cover to cover. I agree with other reviewers who called it unsophisticated and, like them, suggest that it might be better placed on the young adult shelves. This is primarily because the plot was thin and obvious, with no surprising plot twists and no big pay-off; not what I want from a mystery novel. However, that's something Griffin can work on, and her writing does have strengths. From memory there weren't any infelicities or obvious anachronisms in her prose, the story flowed and the elements were well-balanced against each other. There were some good descriptive passages. Another element that needs work is the transitions. Scenes tended to be cut short abruptly and then the action jumped forward in the same manner each time in a forced attempt to increase tension.I didn't warm to any of the characters, but perhaps I would have if I'd read the previous book first. Most lacked definition and their motivations were frequently weak or unexplained, but it may be that certain things will become clearer in the next book. Kitty has some appeal, and it's nice to find a character whose internal voice is actually a reasonably good match for her position in life (something all too many authors get wrong) without burying the reader in Cockney and apostrophes. However, it's hard to sympathise with her in some respects, and the very end of the book, well ... not a good move for the character or the author, I would suggest. There is a reasonable amount of period detail that is well integrated into the flow of the plot, but I would have preferred a stronger period atmosphere. A point on the large number of minority characters in this book: as the action is set in Limehouse and the Parisian demi-monde their inclusion is justifiable, but the constant stream of love and acceptance doesn't seem credible. Fantastical adventures are one thing, but I question the value of setting them within a misleading picture of the past.I may seek out the prequel and sequel to The Child of Ill Fortune, I may not. Due to the violence, drug use and adult themes, my suggestion is that this book is suitable for mid-teens and above.

By Jo I have read all of Kate Griffin's novels and it is my opinion that she is one to today's best fantasy writers.I just finished Kitty Peck and the Child of Ill-Fortune. It was as enjoyable as the rest of Ms. Griffin's books. I see Kitty as a heroine of high morals, but also having a very practical, realistic side to her. This review is a difficult one for me to write because I do so enjoy Ms. Griffin's books. In the second installation of the Kitty Peck series, I noticed a downward and darker turn of character involving Kitty. I don't want to spoil the ending for others who will read this book. So, I will just say this. I've already read Sherlock Holmes. I don't want to read the third installment of this series and find that Kitty is traveling the same broken road as he did. I feel that Kitty does not suffer fools gladly. Hopefully, she will end her own foolish behavior the same time she began it in the final paragraph of the book. She is not her grandmother. You, of course, Ms. Griffin must write your novels as you envision them. I, however, will not be able to continue with this series if things progress the way I suspect they will. Best of luck.

Her work is wonderful: appealing characters, excellently plotted novels and very, very well written. This is a sequel to Kitty Peck and the Music Hall Murders which was the better novel: many of the mysteries in that novel were more of a whodunnit and I for one couldn't spot the culprit. The sequel had less immediacy and less a sense of urgency than in the former. However, that is a very minor complaint, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Highly recommended.
