Paradise Sky, by Joe R. Lansdale

Review "Fantastic . . . Lansdale has pulled out all the stops to deliver a rip-roaring tale."―Paula L. Woods, Los Angeles Times"[A] breakout novel . . . Addictive fun . . . A rollicking ride that's suspenseful, hilarious and satisfyingly redemptive. . . . Lansdale at his funniest and most energetic, with some of the most engaging writing you'll read this year. . . . Lansdale has unleashed something remarkable."―Dwight Silverman, Houston Chronicle"Joe R. Lansdale takes on Nat Love and the legend of Deadwood Dick in his new novel, Paradise Sky, and hosannas should be sung to him for doing so. Paradise Sky is a remarkable achievement, an instant classic of Western lit. . . . It sometimes seems as if [Lansdale] has published around a thousand novels, and he, no doubt, will publish many more. Paradise Sky may well prove to be Lansdale's best."―W.K. Stratton, Dallas Morning News"A deftly told yarn. Everything about Paradise Sky is classic Western drama . . . You can almost smell the beans heating up on the campfire and see the rugged beauty of the frontier."―Evan Rodriguez, Austin American-Statesman"Lansdale is a master storyteller and this novel is a prime example of his talent. Paradise Sky is at times exciting, inspiring, surreal, and heartbreaking. In other words, the novel is true to life."―Josef Hernandez, Examiner.com"Beautiful literary prose . . . He fills each page with heartbreak, suspense, hope, and laughter."―Eric J. Guignard, New York Journal of Books"Folksy, cinematic . . . Lansdale fills his pages with true-hearted heroes, dastardly scoundrels, and rollicking adventures."―Publishers Weekly (starred)"Paradise Sky is a rowdy, funny, suspenseful, and often quite moving yarn."―Booklist (starred)"This fast-paced Western with its multicultural cast of characters is a winner."―Library Journal (starred)"It is a full-blooded western, served up unapologetically and masterfully Lansdale-style and set in the 1870s....Paradise Sky is an unblinking and unvarnished look at a rough-edged time and place in United States history, one that never becomes overburdened with the sorrow of tragic events while respecting the good times and recognizing their temporary nature. Lansdale is one of those very rare authors who can have his readers howling with laughter during one sentence while bringing tear to their eyes with the next."―BookReporterPRAISE FOR JOE LANSDALE:"Reading Joe Lansdale is like listening to a favorite uncle who just happens to be a fabulous storyteller."―Dean Koontz"Too often overlooked in American literature is that lineage descending from our early humorists such as Bierce, and from Twain: regional, darkly comic, bizarre. That's where Joe Lansdale lives. He's very Texan, very American, very funny--and a stone brilliant writer."―James Sallis, author of Drive

Wild West lollapalooza By Cheryl Stout Former slave young Willie Jackson started on this incredible misadventure by simply looking at the rear end of a married white woman. Her husband thought this was such a grievous crime that he spent years trying and sometimes succeeding in hurting Willie and killing the ones Willie loves. On the lam, Willie ends up being taken in by a man that teaches him to shoot plus many other needed life skills and Willie honors the man by taking part of his name and becoming Nat Love. This is the story of Nat's younger years, dodging the irate (read also crazy) husband, gaining friends and wisdom and the nickname of Deadwood Dick. This story, loosely based on the true-life adventures of Nat Love, is a romp, a lollapalooza, a wild tale full of names you've heard before (Wild Bill for one) with adventure, tragedy, and a heaping helping of the dark humor Lansdale is famous for.The characters are so vivid you would recognize them immediately if you ever met them. Lansdale's dialogue, full of patois, is a pleasure to read. The descriptions of the countryside and the people of the Wild West are colorful and even educational.Joe Lansdale is the writer I'd like to be stuck on a desert island with. I am quite sure that he would have enough stories to tell so that neither of us would ever feel the want of entertainment. He is a storyteller extraordinaire. And since I'd rather read a good book than eat, food on the isle wouldn't be my first consideration either. (Of course, Lansdale might have other ideas on who he'd rather be stuck with.)He has written some of my very favorite books of all time - A FINE, DARK LINE; THE BOTTOMS; and THE THICKET. I don't rate PARADISE SKY quite as high as those treasured reads but it definitely is well worth reading.NOTE: I was lucky enough to get this book from Mulholland Books through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

Lansdale’s work in a volume of an anthology series titled Night Visions, which was published by Dark Harvest, a gone-but-not-forgotten horror imprint that I miss to this day. Lansdale remains with us, sustaining a writing output that sacrifices neither quality nor quantity while cutting across and through popular genres like a well-honed sword through soft cotton. I will confess to being unable to keep up with him, given his penchant for writing novels, short stories and graphic novels with the same ability as we less mortals have mastered breathing. While his prose is marked well with grim humor, unflinching violence, and turns of phrase that you will never want to forget (where does he get all of those, anyway?), it is his characters who are by and large the most important element of his work. This is especially true in his latest novel, which also happens to be one of his best.PARADISE SKY is a deceptive name for a rough-edged book such as this, but if you feared that perhaps Lansdale had turned his hand to writing romances, you need not fear. While the book does have its rough-hewn romantic moments, it is a full-blooded western, served up unapologetically and masterfully Lansdale-style and set in the 1870s. Think of it as a dime novel within a dime novel, told in the voice of a popular historical figure --- one who, yes, actually existed --- who wants to set the fictional record straight. The nation is still reeling from the effects of the Civil War, and resentments on both sides continue to boil over. One of those who gets burned is a 20-year-old man named Willie, who is in the wrong place --- rural Texas --- at a very wrong time. Young and black, Willie runs afoul of Sam Ruggert, an unpopular but nonetheless influential local property owner. Within just a few hours, everything and everyone Willie has ever cared about is gone, and he is on the run, pursued by Ruggert and a makeshift posse for hire. Willie, by chance, is able to take refuge with a man named Tate Loving, who shelters him for an extended period and, among other things, teaches him how to shoot --- and shoot extremely well.Willie changes his name to Nat Love and, after some misadventures in the Army as an Indian fighter, makes his way to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he finds employment as a bouncer and a kind of friendship with a legendary sharpshooter named Wild Bill Hickok. A shooting contest brings Nat into contact with a fellow sharpshooter and erstwhile author, who subsequently creates a dime novel character based on Nat called “Deadwood Dick.” Ruggert, however, has doggedly continued to pursue Nat; on what becomes the best and worst day of Nat’s life, he exacts a measure of revenge.Nat, down but not out, engages in his own pursuit of Ruggert, even as his own life course is forever altered once again. It becomes obvious that the cat-and-mouse chase that has continued for many years will end only when one or both of them are dead. But who will ultimately triumph, if anyone? And in what manner? That is the question that Nat ultimately answers here, noting, of course, that no one likes the dull parts.PARADISE SKY is an unblinking and unvarnished look at a rough-edged time and place in United States history, one that never becomes overburdened with the sorrow of tragic events while respecting the good times and recognizing their temporary nature. Lansdale is one of those very rare authors who can have his readers howling with laughter during one sentence while bringing tear to their eyes with the next. And for those who want more, Lansdale’s prodigious output --- and unique presentation --- has provided us with at least one other novel of Nat and his travels in a volume titled BLACK HAT JACK. There may be more. But try PARADISE SKY first.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

This book is a wonderful piece of fiction by a true American original. I won't rehash the plot as you can read the other reviews and the book summary for that. All I will say is that this book made me feel many emotions all the way through. I laughed, I smirked—I even shed a couple tears. That's what a good story does, it makes you feel. But hell, this story is great. Can't recommend it high enough. I'm proud of Joe for writing this one. It sits right up there with my favorites of his: The Bottoms, The Thicket, and Edge Of Dark Water.Put this next on your "To be read" list and buy a copy now. You won't regret it.
