A book I can recommend to everybody By Bill Manuel A book I can recommend to everybody, because it is about everybody, and for everybody.Life presents all of us problems from time to time, and no one is exempt. But in today’s world we live in a culture that attempts to sell us the idea that we deserve to live in an idyllic life in a world where there are no problems, no disappointments, no failures. We are all beautiful or handsome and are entitled to– unlimited sex, drugs and rock and roll, or whatever turns your clock up. All this is accessible at your finger tips if only you buy the right brand of toothpaste, drive the right car listen to the right music and vote Democrat.Sadly, most of us, by the time we reach puberty have noticed that that idyllic world for some reason does not include us. So, we switch brands of toothpaste, and lo and behold… it still doesn’t work out according to the MTV script. So we do the obvious thing and start looking around for someone else to blame. After all it couldn’t be us – could it? Or, maybe it is? Or maybe it’s the 1%ers. Ah ha! It’s God’s fault!Pastor Steve Smothermon’s new book, Big Problems, Bigger God, whatever you need for whatever you face, does and absolutely smashing job at setting the record straight in real world terms. He cites real people who have encountered and endured very real problems, including Bible personalities (of course he would , he is a pastor after all); well known public figures, men and women from his church, and (most surprisingly, if you don’t know Pastor Steve) some of his and his immediate family’s life experiences..According to Pastor Steve, achieving the objective of navigating the vicissitudes of life with the result of developing the best you that you can possibly be, is accomplished by seriously, honestly and completely surrendering your life to God through accepting His Son Jesus as your Lord and savior. Then recognizing that you have just begun the lifelong process of loving and serving Him and His church, and committing to make His Word, the Bible, an integral part of your life by reading and heeding it regularly in order to follow the commands He has given therein for achieving the life He would like for you to have.He reminds us that a Holy God knows each and every time we step off of the path the Word outlines for us to follow, but that if we honestly and truly are sorry for our missteps, God is always the God of another chance. So we are without excuse allowing us to avoid getting up and getting back on the path God has prepared for us. And in so doing we are also performing a service to others among the body of Christ that can encourage and inspire them and provide of a guiding light through example. This is not a book that promises a cheap fire insurance policy if you simply pray a prayer, then go back to living like the devil, nor is it a book that promises unending health, wealth and success if you follow Dr. Phil or Joel Osteen. It does not portray God as a magical genie in a bottle prepared to accede to your every desire, nor a cosmic Santa Claus waiting for your wish list. Rather it portrays God as the self-existent, eternal, unchanging creator of all that exists, and who loves his created image-bearers and desires that each of them become all they can be by following his commands contained in his Word. It is a hard-nosed, tough and real book that makes it clear that life has both good and hard times, but that God desires only the best for us - on his eternal and unchanging terms. If you read God’s Word, you quickly learn the trials and foibles of the heroes of the Old Testament, like Moses, Elijah, David and Daniel, and note the fact that in the New Testament, of Jesus disciples, only John died a natural death of old age. And yet, even though they occasionally grumbled about circumstances, they lived exemplary lives in close communion and joy with their Lord. Can we expect lives with no problems? No, but whatever our problems, God is infinitely bigger. We only need to trust Him that he wants us to be the very best we each can individually be, and live Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Smothermon uses real-life examples of people who have experienced big problems and tells how God has been greater than those problems. He focuses on lessons such as the destructiveness of self-sabotage and learned helplessness, and the importance of remembering that God is the God of innumerable chances. This book does not sugar-coat Christianity, and in fact, Smothermon states that God does not promise that life will be easy, but that He is capable of turning the hopeless into the hopeful. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is experiencing a struggle of faith in their life or who is looking to strengthen their faith.
