Northumberland, 1809: A beautiful young heiress disappears from her locked bedchamber at Linn Hagh.
The local constables are baffled and the townsfolk cry ‘witchcraft’.
The heiress’s uncle summons help from Detective Lavender and his assistant, Constable Woods, who face one of their most challenging cases: The servants and local gypsies aren’t talking; Helen’s siblings are uncooperative; and the sullen local farmers are about to take the law into their own hands.
Lavender and Woods find themselves trapped in the middle of a simmering feud as they uncover a world of family secrets, intrigue and deception in their search for the missing heiress.
Taut, wry and delightful, The Heiress of Linn Hagh is a rollicking tale featuring Lavender and Woods—a double act worthy of Holmes and Watson.

Cole Based on actual events uncovered by work on her family history, Karen Charlton's The Heiress of Linn Hagh is an absorbing glimpse into a Regency England far from London. Detective Stephen Lavender and his partner, Constable Woods, must deal with people who dislike any sign of authority-- farmers and gypsies-- and as they delve deeper into the facts of the case, they begin to understand why. I loved the way Lavender conducted his investigation and how he pieced the clues together. The comradery and humor he and Woods share is welcome relief from their dealings with suspicious townsfolk and supercilious gentry.Although there was little doubt as to who instigated Helen Carnaby's disappearance and why, Charlton really made me wonder just how far those people would go to get what they wanted. All in all, a most satisfactory case for the detective, although I did have one small quibble.... In a very exciting scene at the beginning of the book, Detective Lavender comes in contact with a mysterious (and very attractive) Spanish woman. Yes, she did provide a bit of mystery and romantic interest, but I found this entire subplot unnecessary and distracting. Charlton hooked me with her eery, suspenseful tale and I didn't want to be pulled away from it for a second. Now after seeing how Lavender and Woods can solve a case, I have only one thing to say: I want more!

I enjoyed the characters - especially the crime-fighting duo, Lavender and Woods. Charlton really gets into the muscle of her characters with dialogue to die for and a host of vivid descriptions that leave the reader salivating for more. Although all the clues were there, I still couldn't work out how Helen Carnaby escaped from Linn Hagh - or where she went. Charlton is exceptional at creating true-to-life characters. I really can’t think of anyone who does this better. The research is outstanding, the customs, the dress ..... all a far cry from the superficial research we sometimes get in Historical fiction books that never quite put us there. You'll be in the thick of things in this book, the smells, the sounds, the visuals. Crisp writing and a unique voice makes this novel a five star mystery. I will definitely be looking out for more books by this author.

What turned me off was a question of character. Firstly, the (mostly female) supporting characters we’re introduced to are not exactly three-dimensional. There’s a drunk, passed out prostitute who’s the target of jokes, there’s a shrewish older sister, a sweetness-and-light younger sister and a hapless slip of a girl maid. There’s also a cook who’s motherly. In addition, there’s also a mentally disabled brother who of course is largish, likes to sneak up on people, and is often abused by the sneering evil older brother (it’s uncertain if he’s been given a mustache to twist). As for Woods and Lavender, we’re barely introduced before they are rushing off on a carriage ride to Northumberland. One traveling companion is a Spanish noblewoman who seems haughty to her peers - but shows kindness to her maid, by switching carriage seats when the maid wants to look out the window. (A small bit of business that gives a nice depth to her character, at least.) For this basic humanity, the lady is rewarded by Lavender ogling her in her sleep and fantasizing about what he would like to “do to her” (not “with”, but to – a telling distinction). This is pretty much where I got off the bus, and I’m thankful I only lost $2.99 for the Kindle version. The thing is, I like good character. Certainly in the sense of three-dimensional characters, yes, there’s definitely that. But I also mean in the sense of personal qualities. If I’m expected to take an interest in the good guy or good gal, I want them to be, well, good. This doesn’t mean they should be some kind of plaster saint. But for me it means that they’re mostly admirable with a few flaws here and there. If within the first few pages, I decide that the lead character is kind of a sleaze, it’s hard for me to want to read more about them after that, let alone root for them.
