Checkmate Run is the riveting, autobiographical suspense thriller of a young man’s deadly struggle against the totalitarian regime of Cold War Russia’s rampant cruelty, where merely thinking or speaking freely under its suffocating communist rule is tantamount to treason.
Author Allan Alexander’s compelling tale of real life events offers a chilling insider’s account of Soviet existence post-Stalin but pre-glasnost for young Alex Loevsky, an aspiring doctor and rebellious poet, whose literary works incite the anger of the ever present authorities. His Jewish heritage becomes just one more area in which the government discriminates against him in an attempt to prevent him from entering medical school. With the help of his aunt Anna and her contacts, he is admitted and throws himself into his studies. With his poetry the only source of personal satisfaction and free thought, he continues to write and subsequently gains much recognition with the help of his literary mentor, Andrey Simyavsky.
Suddenly Andrey is arrested and sentenced to prison after his own novel, Lyubimov, was secretly published abroad. With danger around every corner, and not knowing who can be trusted in the torturous reality of the shadowy world around him, Alex Loevsky’s life becomes a living game of chess as he continually must stay one step ahead of the vicious KGB agents who are out to close in on him as he attempts to smuggle the transcript of Andrey’s “show trial” out of the country and expose this and other atrocities of the regime to the Western world.
The checkmate he is racing headlong towards will culminate in one of two things...freedom, or death. The courage it takes to live life, and find love, and freedom, against all odds is palpable and raw in this heartbreaking novel.

About the Author Allan Alexander was born in Moscow and grew up in a totalitarian state. He was a published poet by the age of eighteen and beat the odds of Jewish admission quotas by being accepted by the Medical School. His collaboration with an avant-garde literary magazine ended with a six-month, politically motivated incarceration. After his release, he returned to his medical studies and became intricately involved in the Soviet Jewry struggle for freedom to emigrate. In 1975 Alexander, his wife, and their young son left the Soviet Union, arriving in the United States with just a couple of suitcases, a lot of aspirations, and thirty-three dollars in their pockets. Today all three of them are successful practicing physicians in St. Petersburg, Florida.

By Murray Silverstein A phenomenal journey filled with suspense, excitement, and duplicity, as seen through the maturing eyes of poet and medical student Alex Loevsky. Alexander's first novel is crisply written and an adventure and love story set against the coercive backdrop of the last two decades of Soviet Russia. Excellently told and well written.
