The mists are death. And the mists are everywhere. “Oh, the men here worshipped him as a god. The god who had fought a jotunn, fought trolls, fought varulfur and won, time after time. Except when he didn’t.” ~~~~ For nearly five thousand years the mists of Niflheim have enveloped Midgard. And in those mists the chosen of Hel--the Niflungar--flourish while the rest of mankind hides behind the fragile protection of flames. But Odin has slain the Niflungar prince and rejected their princess Gudrun, and now their sorceress queen has sent armies of trolls and draugar to destroy the Aesir. Despite Odin’s rejection, Gudrun cannot deny her heart longs for the Aesir King, but neither can she refuse her mother’s command to hunt him down. She’ll do everything in her power to find Odin and make him hers--even if it means killing his wife. And if Gudrun cannot win Odin back, she won’t stop her mother from turning all the unholy power of Hel against the Aesir. ~~~~ Norse mythology and historical fantasy collide in book 2 of the Ragnarok Era. Review In the second installment of Larkin's Ragnarok Era series, the Mists of Niflheim, Larkin carries forward with the mystery and magic which surrounds the world of Midgard. While in the Mists of Niflheim we find Odin suffering the repercussions of murdering the Niflungar's heir, Larkin drives his readers deeper, not only into the hero's life, but into the lives of his supporting characters. The personas that we find beneath the exteriors painted by Larkin are the beauty of this segment of the Ragnarok Era. Larkin artfully creates the storyline of the Aesir on their epic crusade to reach the land of the Vanir, while simultaneously gifting his audience with a deeper sense of who, and what, the supporting cast of characters embody. The Mists of Niflheim is an action packed read that is a purely wonderful delight as book two in Larkin's Ragnarok Era series.-E. Bagley, Amazon Customer
From the Author Interview with the authorQ: Do all your fantasy novels take place in the same world?A: The Worldsea Era, the Skyfall Era, and the Ragnarok Era take place in the same world, but at vastly different time periods. The world undergoes cyclical destruction and recreation, with each new iteration differing, but following some familiar patterns.Q: What is "Mythic Fantasy"?A: People sometimes use this term to mean different things, but in the case of my work, we're talking about re-tellings of real world myths in a historical fantasy setting. Every myth, legend, and fairytale you've ever heard probably happened on this Earth. It survived and came to us through a kind of collective unconscious, becoming the stories we know and love. However, the way things happened and reasons behind them might be different.I adore mythology from any culture. Hindu, Norse, Greek all of them. Mythology helped shape the fantasy genre. And while lots of fantasies pull in aspects of mythology, I wanted to create something to reconcile all world mythologies into an epic fantasy whole.Q: Is this epic fantasy or historical fantasy?A: It's historical fiction written in an epic style with a healthy dose of dark fantasy. It takes places on an alternate version of Earth, one where the supernatural has changed the course of history in subtle or not-so-subtle ways. In some eras this is a kind of mythic past akin to that found in Conan or other classic Sword and Sorcery stories. In other eras, time more closely resembles our known history.Q: Is this suitable for my teenager?A: This is a common question, but it's hard to answer because every parent and every child is different. It really comes down to if you would let your teenager watch an R-rated movie. My work includes profanity, sex, and often pervasive violence. It is written for adults, but some parents find it acceptable for younger readers.Q: Is there a recommended reading order?A: You could read the series in any order, but I would probably recommend order of release:
- Children of Sun and Moon
- Curse of Witch and War
- Currents of Wind and Tide
- Legacy of Moon and Fire
- Fragments of Memory and Dream
- Avatar of Night and Day
- The Apples of Idunn
- The Mists of Niflheim
- The Seventh Princess
- The Burning Princess

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. At the end of Book 1, Odin is heading to Vanaheim… By Wordwizard …and Not-Much-Of-A-SPOILER—at the end of Book 2, Odin is heading to Vanaheim. Niflungar have tried to stop him with draugar and trolls and torture, but he has prevailed. END OF SPOILERS.No one should try reading Book 2 of THE RAGNAROK ERA without first reading Book 1. There was plenty of plot in THE APPLES OF IDUNN (which I provisionally rated 4 stars with a 5th star waiting on the future volumes), but THE MISTS OF NIFLHEIM seems to be in a holding pattern. No major secrets have been revealed. There are four different point-of-view characters: Odin, Gudrun, Tyr, and Sigyn, with most of the chapters told from a woman's POV, but the series has yet to pass the Bechdel test. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test Everything that isn't about Odin is about his blood-brother Loki/Loge. I'm still hoping for further interesting developments in future books, but I can't say that this one has pulled its own weight. Also, this one doesn't seem to have been through editing for typos and other minor glitches either. There are quite a number of completely gratuitous F-bombs, for those who care about such.I received an ARC of this ebook for the purpose of giving an unbiased review.
