Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg… Captain Daniel Spencer had seen enough of war. His patriotism shattered by senseless carnage, his health drained by wounds, he had nothing left to give. Surely returning to his wife Sarah and their mountainside home will restore his perspective, his health – his humanity. Spencer is finding that coming home won’t be that simple; somehow everything has changed. Soon, nightmares stalk his nights, unspeakable memories shadow his days. His dark moods take their toll on Sarah and their marriage. And now the war that so haunts Daniel has followed him home: the Confederate Army has invaded Pennsylvania. He listens as the sounds of battle rumble up the mountainside from nearby Gettysburg with his memories and a growing guilt – had he deserted his comrades? Daniel Spencer must head into the battle’s grim aftermath to find an answer to his questions about war and the meaning of survival…

It Story evolves around the life of Captain Daniel Spencer, a Captain of the 107th Pa Volunteers. The story is an excellent depiction of post-traumatic strss disorder that was suffered not only from soldiers coming back from war to deal with the ordinary pressures of life, but also how his family had to deal with the emotions he was going thru.. It captivated brillantly, how his wife had a hard time handling Daniels emotions.. always trying to help.. but seemingly always making it harder on her husband.the story goes into the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg and the hardships that Capt Spencer had to deal with.. especially the killing of soldiers of both sides and how it effected him. Really painful, was Capt Spencer emotions of not being there for his men at the Battle of Gettysburg.. and the demons that he felt in the aftermath of the battle. It is truly a novel that will make you think not of the romance of the battle or Romance the Civil war, but the hardships that a common soldier went through, and how it effected his love ones. I would recommmend this book to any person that wants to really know what a soldier and his family went through during the war.. an excellent book indeed!
