The Island, by Nancy Lee

About the Author While living in Cloquet, MN, Nancy had many opportunities to collect stories her elderly friends had stored away since the great fire in 1918. They invited her to coffee and shared their memories. Nancy listened as they told of the disaster that entered their lives on October 12 of that year. From these reminiscences she put together a novel incorporating the Island, the city of Cloquet, life and industry at that time, and of course the great fire that swept down upon the city, wiping it from the face of the earth.

Nancy graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and became a a teacher in English literature after a rather lengthy sabbatical to raise her six children. During her years at home, she helped with homework, packed lunches, healed the sick, and gave advice to the occasional child with a broken heart. From all this experience, Nancy wrote articles depicting her adventures as a mother for Scope Magazine, a women's periodical published by the American Lutheran Church, and traveled extensively as a speaker to women's groups of the church.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read for Cloquet natives By Jan Nancy Lee created a novel filled with actual history and a warm story of life on The Island. Individual names reflect very special individuals in some cases, bringing the reader who is acquainted with the author just another dash of reality and warmth. I recommend it heartily, especially for those like me who was born 18 years after The Fire and tales of that event and 'the island' were part of my childhood.
