When Pauline first sees the house, tears well up in her eyes and in a trembling voice she says, "Fred, that house... it's not at all what I expected. It's so small. It looks like a shack." Faced with the hardships of the 1930's, Pauline and Fred come from Michigan to Whidbey Island, one of many islands nestled in Puget Sound in Washington State. The young couple arrive in 1934 as the construction of the Deception Pass Bridge begins. Embraced by new friends in the farming community of Cornet, they work to make a new home while surviving disasters and adapting to the adventures of rural life. Pauline befriends a young man in the Civilian Conservation Corps and seeks to unravel his mysterious past. The story ends with the celebration of the bridge dedication in 1935. "Poetic language, beautifully done!" --Dorothy Read, Author of End the Silence. "An elegantly written story of both a woman and an island." --Victoria Farrington, MFA.

Holstine This gentle read is a history lesson wrapped in a sweet story of a couple who moved from Michigan to Whidbey Island, Washington in the throes of the Depression. The author makes full use of her descriptive skills to bring the people and landscapes to life, as she tells the tale of Pauline and Fred as they adjust to living on a ramshackle farm. The rural 1934 life is brought to us in great detail, with all the hardships of hauling water and using an outhouse, and each step toward modernization is a triumph. It is obvious the author has lived in this area her whole life, and draws upon her extensive knowledge of history (and human nature) to bring us this wonderful story. I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone who lives In the Puget Sound area, and wishes to share our natural bounty and beauty with others.

By Amazon Customer Pauline is a fiction story is sprinkled with Whidbey Island lore of true adventures and good times that were part of the rural lifestyle. I was fully taken in by the characters and kept going for just one more chapter over and over before I put it down for the night. There is not a lot of conflict and tension in this story. Not every plot has to be action packed, dangerous and suspenseful. Day to day life has plenty of issues and the reader can relate to those faced by Pauline and Fred. Life can be good! This book is inspirational in that way.
