November 1941. The Western Desert, North Africa. The British army is despairing of General Rommel, The Desert Fox, commander of the German Afrika Korps. Rommel is a brilliant German commander in battle, and as he inflicts defeat after defeat on the British forces Winston Churchill decides that man known as The Desert Fox must die. Colonel Geoffrey Keyes, an ambitious commando, is given the simple mission: Kill Rommel. But Keyes has a dangerous rival in Captain David Stirling, the founder of the Special Air Service (the SAS), who is also seeking fame for himself and his unit. After a series of desperate adventures the two rival forces are finally in position. In a battle which is as much against each other as against the German enemy, who will now carry out the murder, Keyes or Stirling? In this clever mix of fact and fiction Charles Whiting starts a major new series detailing the rise of SAS over half a century to become the world’s most elite and feared military force. 'A top-drawer military thriller that combines authenticity and action in equal measure.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade Off'. With nearly 300 books under his belt, Charles Whiting was one of the most prolific writers of his time. His best-known books were published under the name Leo Kessler and featured the Assault Regiment Wotan, Hitler’s hand-picked SS battle group. They include ‘The Valley of the Assassins’, ‘Schirmer’s Headhunters’, ‘Cauldron of Blood’ and ‘Guns at Cassino’. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

The SAS in WWII's North Africa By Nyssa It's early 1941 in North Africa and new and unusual combat regiment called the Special Air Service (SAS) has been formed in the British Army under the leadership of Captain David Stirling, formerly of the Scots Guards. Now all they need is a few high profile assignments to build their reputation and credibility within the Army and beyond. They may just be getting that chance when they are assigned as support in an attempt to assassinate Field Marshal Erwin Rommel at his headquarters in Libya. This book was mis-titled. Rather than describing a complex plot to get behind German and Italian lines to kill Rommel, it is more of a fictionalized historical novel about the formation and training of the SAS and their first missions, much of it centering around a nineteen year old Lt. Bill O'Sullivan, one of the first recruits into the new force. A more accurate title might have been "SAS: The Beginnings" or "O'Sullivan of the SAS."The story is typical of the genre with stalwart NCOs, drinking and carousing in Cairo, and senior officers demanding the impossible. It was well written and well paced, but I'll admit to having difficulty interpreting several of the UK slang terms that were in use at the time. My Kindle dictionary could offer no help; luckily understanding them was not critical to the story.Recommended for those who enjoy reading about World War II or more specifically, the portion of the war fought in North Africa.
