Seventeen year-old Larry Kinsella knows nothing of life beyond the city of Vancouver and when he first meets Benita Pigeon, a member of the Carrier Nation, he is drawn to her by their differences. Their brief, often tumultuous, relationship is brought to a calamitous end by an unwanted pregnancy and by Larry's response to it. Consumed by anger and bitterness, Benita flees to her ancestral home where she struggles to adjust to a traditional way of life, while Larry, driven by guilt and remorse, enters the seminary and becomes a Catholic priest. But the past lays claim to both of them and when they meet again it is under circumstances where they must struggle to redeem themselves and to find their true identity. Set in the middle of the last century against a backdrop of northern British Columbia and the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, "Back To Hope" is a story that often touches on violence, conflict, poverty, and despair. But it is also a meditation on family and belonging, on faith, and above all, on hope.

The plot moved along briskly, with the clever use of a line or phrase ending a chapter to which you felt you had to know the answer or solution, and therefore keep you reading. There was no unnecessary embellishment or detail; every description was put there to advance plot or characterization.Back to Hope is a good, informative read for Canadians who may not be familiar with the West or with the specific cultural customs and clashes that life there can involve. I was particularly impressed by Deirdre's intimate knowledge of life on northern Reserves, on Italian/Irish-Catholic points of view of the Church and everyday morality, and especially how First Nations Canadians and non-natives often see the same event or experience from an entirely different perspective. This highlights the sometimes painful relationship and lack of understanding between our First Nations and other Canadians.I liked the way Deirdre alternates between Larry's first person account (she inhabits the male mind very adeptly) and the omniscient author who presents Benita and the other characters. This keeps the perspectives fresh and engaging. While the setting is obviously Canadian, the personal and societal issues easily transcend our country. This is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes a good read, and learns some hard truths along the way.Liz

I mostly read thrillers, but the emotions I felt from reading Deirdre Santesso’s ‘Back to Hope’, made me realize I need to branch out more with my choice of genres. I grew up in Sweden and knew little about the lack of understanding between our First Nations and other Canadians. In ‘Back to Hope’, Santesso shows the way it was in the mid 1960s, and she does it with a gentle and deep understanding. It was easy to become involved with the characters. They felt real and made me care about what would happen to them. This is a heartwarming and emotional story with a surprising ending. I can truly recommend it.

By Cecile Daoust After reading the first paragraph, I reread it again admiring its eloquence. By page fifteen, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down!Much research went into details of the life in Vancouver in the seventies and also in living on a Northern reserve, home of the Carrier Nation. Some readers will be able to relate to the history and the culture of that era... Fascinating! Some passages invoked in me much sadness but also much admiration and hope for Larry and Benita!I have recommended the purchase of this book for our local library and also as a choice for our Book Club!
