When Johanna van Zweel meets William the first day of January in 1900, she doesn't intend to fall in love and certainly not with an Australian. A foreigner, an uitlander, William and his mate Eddie have come to South Africa seeking to make their fortunes in gold.

With her parents away observing the Commando Law in the Orange Free State, Johanna is tasked with ensuring Eagle's Nest, the family farm in Barberton, runs smoothly and efficiently to support her brothers and sisters, each of whom is a player in the arena of a cruel war. She sees that her active duty in the war effort is to keep the farm running to provide food and horses for the commandos. She is determined to save her homeland and her kin from the imperial onslaught. William, on the other hand, pledges allegiance to the British Empire.

Set in the tumultuous years of 1899 to 1902 in South Africa, this romance between Johanna and William, both on different sides of a great conflict, charts their personal, military, and political challenges. The desperate passion of Johanna and William seems an impossibility. Can their love survive as everything they believe in forces them apart?

Excellent Historical/Adventure/Thriller/Romance novel of South Africa By David E Crozier In the time of the Boer War 1899-2002 between Great Britain and the Boer Republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free state, the life of this book's heroine protagonist Joanna Van Zweel is torn between her newfound love for William, an Australian volunteer with the British forces on the one hand, and on the other for her threatened Boer family, Afrikaaner country and heritage and the family farm she has had to manage in wartime and to which she is devoted.Set in the rugged Eastern Transvaal district of Barberton bordering the majestic Drakensberg mountains, the author of "Eagle's Cry" uses evocative scenes of the veldt, the mountains, the farm and episodes of the war as her background for this wonderful historical fiction story. It is dramatized by William and her enlisted father and brothers being enemies; her parents later captured and exiled to an internment camp on St .Helena; her sister and family at death's door in one of the notorious terrible British concentration camps. The historical background is very well crafted into the main plot. This book is a must for anyone enjoying well-written historical fiction with gripping action and adventure and an endearing love story where true love survives the horror and tragedy of war. I was immediately engrossed in this fast-moving novel.A gripping story with the necessary authenticity to her characters and descriptions of the veldt, farm life and war scenes to make them believable. She reminds me of Zane Grey and his classic American Western / Romantic novels. Yes, a novel of action and blood and thunder but the violence is toned down and the tale is interspersed with much reflection. I think she successfully integrates the needs of both a novel and a romance with strong characters, moral challenges with good triumphing over evil and tragedy transcended to restore a peaceful harmonious world of romance. Yet, she does not make superheroes of ordinary people and her characters are not stereotyped. So it is not a "dime" novel or a cheap Italian cowboy film or a ""skiet 'n donder" to S.Africans. With an evident good understanding of human psychology she appeals to the emotions and to the general experience of mankind. This debut novel reveals the author's good sense of creating memorable characters and writing excellent descriptive prose with a coherent narrative.Naturally of great interest to Southern Africans and Africana enthusiasts and historians, this book has a much wider universal appeal to all readers of novels, especially to those book lovers of historical, adventure, thriller and romance bent. it is an adult book but without profanity and would also be an excellent adjunct text for High School/College students of S.African history.I can only strongly recommend "Eagle's Cry" and hope it is only the first of further great novels by this author . A new Wilbur Smith?

You can identify with characters struggles, being so similar to american history. Their story is our great grandparents story also. I learned so much about the Boer War, the way it affected the people involved.Johanna is such a wonderful role model for women from all walks of life. A very easy read, which leaves you wanting to know more about this wonderful family.

The more I read, the more I could see parallels between South African and American history, like war as a means to dislodge oppression, and the guerrilla tactics used in American and South African wars, amongst other things.Johanna's determination to choose love in spite the cultural differences that could derail it, is heartwarming.Well worth reading!
