"...gripping...mesmerizingly real...." Kirkus Reviews First century CE, Roman Palestine: Yehuda Tauma believes he’s found his lucky break when he finds a valuable pearl on the floor of the temple of Jerusalem where he works as a scribe. Convinced that his position at the temple only serves to maintain the network of corruption and greed that he eschews, Yehuda and his bodyguard Ioannis set out for a new life in Damascus. But when they come upon the body of Yehuda’s adopted father and mentor outside the village of Armageddon, Yehuda vows to find the killer and uncover the reason he was killed. Ever loyal, Ioannis promises to accompany Yehuda on his avenging mission. As the two men search for the killer, they meet surprising allies and treacherous adversaries along the way. Yehuda and Ioannis must unravel the intricate secret messages and visionary clues left behind by the dead man—while trying to stay alive themselves. Renegade scribes, revolutionary cells, temple spies, oppressive tyrants, and visionary prophets and priestesses collide in this mystery of the volatile first century in the Middle East. "The mystery itself is gripping enough—unfurling slowly, tantalizingly—but the history provided as a backdrop to the fictional narrative is mesmerizingly real.--Kirkus Reviews "[a] subtle blend of genres with mystic elements...the 'whodunit' storyline and some well-chosen characters keep the book entertaining and very enjoyable...reads very easily for such an intellectually stimulating novel."--Historical Novel Society

By Linda BF An enlightening view of the world around Jesus - intrigues, politics, love matches, family struggles - with Douglas-Klotz's unique and in-depth understanding of the Middle Eastern mindset blended with his love for Jesus, to create a story which, like all his writings, for me leads to a deeper reverence for The Holy One and for the the potentials He/She implanted in humans - for unity, and/or for chaos and war - always our choice. He also manages to help me almost understand the things that lead people to the short-term solutions of violence, even in the context of the enormous body of experience that demonstrates its futility. Jesus neither fought nor condemned this choice - He simply stayed focused on changing his world through love and forgiveness - no doubt saddened by how few were ready for that message. But now I'm ranting, so instead I'll just say it is a very good read, well-documented and full of great characterization a and action - both spiritual and physical.

Who knew this was going on By Susan My favorite aspect of “A Murder at Armageddon” is that I gained a whole new perspective on pre-Christian Jewish culture and life as it might have been in the middle east in the first century CE. AKA Chisti (pen name) brings us into a world that research shows, was at the time of several Jewish people we have heard of such as John the Baptist, and the several opposing groups and their stiffening positions. What is fascinating is how and what he shows us about these opposing groups. My other favorite part was the subtle inner teachings that one could use in daily life even today. These are not dogmatic concepts that hit us over the head, but are rather tucked into the story, waiting to be found if you wish. And of course there is the 'who dunnit' question that had me turning pages to discover the answer. This book promises to be one of a series of “Judas Thomas” mysteries. Anyone familiar with the found Gnostic Gospels might be able to guess what is coming next, for Yahuda and his companion Ioannis. Pick this one up if you love history, want to find learn more in an easy manner or just plain love a good mystery.
