Whether it’s the tabloid journalists, the dime store detectives, or the publicity hungry psychologists, everyone seems to feel that his life was the perfect laboratory for creating a psychopath. Jack’s only choice then is to catch the killer himself, but the more he learns, the more the evidence seems to point toward him - is there something about himself he doesn't know? As if to drive the point home, he has again begun sleepwalking, the revelation of which causes him to recall aspects of his past long since repressed, not the least of which that night as a child when he woke up covered in blood. Rocked to his core, he decides to wait it out, keep to himself, do some thinking, but that’s before Susan goes missing, and all at once he finds himself doing things he never thought possible. To get her back, however, he will not only have to evade the police, outsmart a malicious duo of reporters, and escape from a gang of sadistic killers, but most difficult of all, face up to his demons - the only question is who will he be when it’s all over?

A Different Voice By marmar Within the first few chapters, it became apparent that our “hero,” was nothing like the usual assortment of detectives I’m used to reading about, and that’s when I became hooked. Not only does Jack not have a photographic memory and lightening fast mind, but he’s kind of a bonehead. Accused of being a serial killer at the lowest point in his life, we not only see how he responds, but live it with him, reminding us of just how flawed we really are. For many of his thoughts and machinations initially sound quite logical - that is of course until we find out what he (we?) failed to consider. The beauty of this, is that the reader is given the same evidence as Jack (there are no cheap revelations - it’s all out there). Thus, in a way, we’re asked to challenge our own reasoning skills, but the upshot of all this is that we are fully engaged with the character, making him more personal to us, more sympathetic, to the point where I hated to see go.Perhaps even more important, however, is the way almost every page seems to contain some sort of question or debate we’re forced to contend with, and although I didn’t always agree with Jack or the narrator (author?), I appreciated the fact that I found myself going back and forth in my own mind, which as you will see is a major theme of the book.Other than this, it must be mentioned that the book can be downright hysterical. Whether it was the petty indignities, the ironic insights, or the oddball characterizations, I sometimes found myself laughing out loud, and so my overall experience was outstanding. Looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next. Truly a different voice.

Captivating By Jake I bought the novel for the title and cover and was initially disappointed, but the more I read, the more I saw that it wasn't so much a thriller as a deep, oftentimes funny, psychological mystery, and yet there were elements of suspense and horror, making it difficult to categorize. In any event, whether it was the social commentary, the many references to art history (which seem to somehow correspond with the development of the protagonist), or the many truly strange characters, it left me with something. As a matter of fact, I couldn't wait to see what happened next, and unlike so many books these days, the end didn't fizzle out. Both moving yet elucidating, all loose ends ewre convincingly resolved. Not a masterpiece, but strong recommendation.
