NYT Bestselling author Harlen Coben says of Loren Estleman, "Loren Estleman is my hero," and Bestselling author John Lescroart calls him "The Stravinsky of hard-boiled prose..." Winner of multiple Spur, Western Heritage, and Stirrup awards, and a lifetime achievement award honoree by the Western Writers of America, Estleman is back with "The Master Executioner," a classic novel of the old west. Ordinary people do not understand Oscar Stone. Everything he does, he does impeccably. He is a profound student of his art, completely versed in its traditions over the centuries. He is a student of ropes and their properties, a master of the latest scientific knowledge about the human neck, a careful calculator of weights and drops, and an exacting observer of results. For more than a quarter of a century he has worked to create a reputation as a man peerless in his craft: the master executioner. Yet he is utterly alone: His devotion to his work costs him his marriage. Suddenly, one day, a piece of his past catches him unawares, and Oscar comes to a moment of devastating truth and for the first time knows himself.

The Master Executioner, by Loren D. Estleman

From Publishers Weekly This superbly crafted novel of the American West not only outshines any of Estleman's 12 previous novels (Billy Gashade, etc.) with Forge, it also stands far above considerably weaker efforts currently being cranked out by many who still labor in this fading genre. Oscar Stone goes from being a carpenter to a hangman, "a master executioner" who heard his calling by accident but once his talent is discovered, he embraces it to the exclusion of everything else, including his wife or any hope of an ordinary life. Fabian T. Rudd, a veteran executioner and frontier philosopher (and one of the most wonderfully original characters to come out of a western novel in years), tutors Stone in the finer points of death by hanging. The apprentice takes his lessons well beyond the fundamentals and elevates his profession from a mere vocation to a veritable art. He achieves personal (albeit dubious) celebrity as a result, but the darkness of his trade haunts the young man as he traverses the American West, dispensing the final act of justice, applying and always improving his expertise to guarantee an efficient and humane dispatch to some of the worst villains of the frontier. Eventually, Stone must come to terms with who he is and what he does. He tries to understand that to do a thing well and with respect is the greatest goal of human endeavor, no matter how grisly the particulars may be or how lonely he may become as a result. This excellent novel is well researched and effectively and unsentimentally delivered, with only the occasional anachronism marring a nearly perfect and historically accurate dramatization of the American West and the colorful people who built it. From Booklist Oscar Stone accepts a temporary position building a gallows in Topeka, Kansas, where he meets Fabian Timothy Rudd, a hangman of some repute. Rudd is impressed with Stone's carpentry skills and pride in his work and so takes on the role of mentor as Stone becomes a kind of apprentice hangman. But no one loves a hangman, including his wife, who can't live with her young husband's career choice. Stone travels through the West with Rudd from execution to execution, drinking to dull the isolation and refining his skills. Miscalculations can lead to strangulation or worse: a beheading. Decades pass, and Stone has a final meeting with the wife who left him and learns a terrible truth. Estleman has created an unforgettable character in Stone. Swept up by circumstance and an unwanted gift for dispensing death, he's unable to break away from his life's fated path despite the loss of all he holds close. A dark, compelling journey into a previously unexplored facet of the Old West. Wes LukowskyCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "The tale of a master executioner written by a master storyteller: What more could you ask for?"-Elmore Leonard"One feels and smells the gallows and hears the snap of the second cervical vertebrae. It is a remarkable book and one I would urge you to read."-The Amarillo News & Globe-Times, Texas"This is definitely a novel worth reading."-The Roanoke Times, Virginia

I, unfortunately, couldn't manage to.This is the story of Oscar Stone, professional hangman, from his Civil War experiences to nearly the turn of the century. I found the plot to be flat, lacking in climactic events and tension. Stone becomes a hangman, his wife leaves him, and then... well, he hangs people. The story is about how his profession changes him, and also about how the West changes during his lifespan. I found the plot dull, though, essentially because I couldn't get into Stone as a character. A psychiatrist would say he has a "flat affect". He has little personality, little passion. The end of the story, which should be devastating, lacks impact because of the character's lack of apparent emotion about anything. Even when he searches for his wife, when he learns his son is dead, we never really get into Stone's head. Stone's wife is an utter cipher, even when she explains her motives. The book is written in a spare, occasionally awkward style. Dialogue stands out, with Rudd, Stone's mentor, being particularly well done in this regard. A use of language which some reviewers have interpreted as stark and stylish came across to me as quite boring. I got very little sense of the sounds, smells and sights of the West -- with the exception of a wealth of detail on carpentry and hanging ropes.Estleman does seem to have a good grasp of his period, with only a few minor errors (La Matte for LeMat) apparent. However, he tends to "tell" rather than "show" his historical information, enhancing the dry, dull feeling of the book.

In The Master Executioner, Estleman tells the story of a hangman in the middle of the 19th century. As is always the case with this author, the reader is treated to incredible dialogue and characters that are immediately drawn with a few expert lines and details. I will not give away the ending, suffice to say this is a terribly sad novel about a complex and very unique man. Estleman is too fine a writer to pull at your heartstrings in a clichéd or obvious way. The man character, Executioner Oscar Stone, is not the sort of character that would easily win a reader's sympathy. He is, first and foremost, a hangman. He is also a hard, cold individual never at ease among his fellow humans. Yet, in Estleman's expert hands, this character lives and breaths and, finally, effects the reader very deeply.Estleman is also the master of the authentic western. This book contains rich, detailed portraits of western towns, both large and small, from this time period. He is always accurate in the details, and I always feel Estleman gives me the most accurate portrait of how things really must have been in the West, more so than any other author. For the best taste of this, one should read Bloody Season by this author for the best account of the Shootout at the OK Corral.Fascinating characters and great, original writing. Buy this book. You will not regret it.

Mailer and King have both told execution stories, but neither can compare to the chilling reality Estleman brings to this tale. The diction rings true; nary a word is misplaced. And this care of the language makes his journey down this seldom travelled road both a reading pleasure and a commentary on man's motivation. If you read nothing else this summer, read this.

India. The British Empire is at the height of its power. The Queen Empress had a considerable reputation for two things: one was interfering in her Ministers' foreign policy, and the other was her far-reaching interest in the affairs of her many children. So it was not surprising that when it was announced that the Grand Duchess Sergius of Russia — Queen Victoria's own granddaughter — would undertake a mission to Nepal, it caused no little stir among the British. Now Queen Victoria's granddaughter has married into the Russian royal family, she needs an escort to take her from Moscow to Nepal by way of India. At home, the Ministers are on edge, wondering why the visit should take place at all, and in India, the Viceroy Lord Elgin was exasperated at having to provide an Army escort for the Regiment of Cossacks who were being allowed to march over British territory. Tensions are stirring. But Captain James Ogilvie of the 114th Queen's Own Royal Strathspeys was soon to discover that this was no ordinary escort duty and he cannot refuse a request from the Queen… These are dangerous times in India and it’s up to Ogilvie to safely guide the Grand Duchess through the tense atmosphere. But is he the right man for the job? Apart from the mystery surrounding the mission, the Grand Duchess travelled in a curtained palanquin, seen by no-one, and her Cossack guard showed only open hostility to the British… Can Ogilvie protect his royal charge and still manage to keep his sights on the possible uprising on the horizon? ‘By Command of the Viceroy’ is the next thrilling historical adventure in the James Ogilvie series. It was originally published under the pen name Duncan MacNeil. Praise for Philip McCutchan: "His character conflicts are well organised." — Daily Telegraph "A most exciting successor to his first novel — and it is just as rugged." — The Times, Hamilton, New Zealand Philip McCutchan (1920-1996) grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime's interest in the sea. Military history was an early interest resulting in several fiction books, from amongst his large output, about the British Army and its campaigns, especially in the last 150 years. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent. Strange characters. Frightning monsters. By A Customer The publisher calls this book "the ultimate crustacean encounter," and that it is! The quirky characters and setting enhance the book's appeal. "Twin Peaks" meets "Jaws." The depictions of the sea spiders are among the scariest creature-scenes I've ever read, and some of the attack scenes had me squirming for more. Loaded with fascinating biological facts and oddities. Strange things are born in the ocean's depths... I can't wait until they make a blockbuster movie from this book. It would be more powerful than "Jaws" because the giant sea spiders are more terrifying, more deadly. I notice that the West Coast Review of Books remarked: "Pickover has collaborated on a novel with the prolific Piers Anthony, and the combination of Pickover's theory and Anthony's fantasy should yield an intellectual tour de force without precedent."

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating, scary, odd characters, great setting By Cougar I enjoyed this book very much for its odd characters and chillingly scary sea creatures. At times, the suspense was very high and the book hard to put down. The New Foundland setting was haunting and beautiful, and I don't think readers will have ever read a book quite like this! It is strange and absurd, biological, mystical, mythical. Hard to describe. You can't go wrong with this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful first novel from Cliff Pickover By A Customer Spider Legs is not your ordinary science fiction book. The characters and motives are different to anything I have read. It remind me a lot of Relic and Relicary, where science, horror and suspense are intermingle together to create one bizarre but enthrilling story. The action is great and really scary. But what I love best is the relationship between Nathalie and Nathan and later Elmo and Lisa. The only thing that I think it was a little overboard was some of the scientic information that take away a little from the story but in itself the information is amazing about sea spider, marine life in general and our pollution situation in the world right now. It is a waking call of a sort about our interaction with Nature and how that can affect us. I really recommend this book if you love the sea and care about our world ecology, with an added amount of action and love to spice up things. ;-) I can't wait for more new science-fiction from Pickover. Also it is nice to see that Piers Anthony collaborate in this novel, adding some really nice dimesion to the characters and situation. Really a very nice combination.

This Victorian-era historical romance weaves a story of love overcoming every obstacle during one of the most tumultuous periods in history, when revolutions in Europe and the Civil War in the United States transformed the basic foundations of society, while inventions such as the telegraph changed the way the world worked. It’s 1848, and the Irish Potato Famine has claimed more lives than anyone cares to count while English landlords continue to evict their tenants with a ruthless lack of compassion. Young Brian O’Rourke, a Catholic, educated son in an impoverished family of Ribbonmen meets Elizabeth Reilly, a talented Protestant pianist from London, when she’s visiting her father in Ireland. After secretly promising themselves to each other at the age of sixteen, their twisted fates encounter unforeseen difficulties when Elizabeth returns to London to study piano with Chopin, while Brian immigrates to America on a famine ship. Brian joins the nascent telegraph industry where he uses his expertise to help slaves escape on the Underground Railroad. He then travels to California to work on the Transcontinental Telegraph and to Washington to help President Lincoln during the Civil War, while Elizabeth launches a successful career as a concert pianist in Europe and America. This enduring romance captures the passionate spirits of two people determined to find each other regardless of the forces conspiring to keep them apart.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Engaging, well-written historical fiction with a love story for the ages! By Cindy Jewkes The story begins in Ireland in 1848 during the Irish Potato Famine. Landlords are ruthlessly evicting their tenants and thousands are dying in the streets. When 16-year-old Elizabeth Reilly nurses Brian O’Rourke back to health after nearly starving to death, the young lovers’ fates become intertwined. After Brian’s family is killed by English soldiers, he and his sister Mary are forced to flee to America on a famine ship and start a new life, but not before promising Elizabeth that he would find her someday. Elizabeth moves to France to study with Chopin and pursue her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Elizabeth and Brian each take incredible journeys that give the reader a glimpse into the rich history of the telegraph, the Underground Railroad, and the American Civil War. Will Brian and Elizabeth find each other in a country ripped apart by war?StrengthsI’m always excited when I find a really good historical fiction novel. I detest history books but I enjoy learning about the past. Historical fiction, for me, is the best way to learn history because it makes those time periods come alive in ways that text books can never achieve. I don’t know if I can express emphatically enough how much I loved The Angel of Innisfree. There was so much action–far more I would ever expect from this genre!–and the story line was consistently moving along at the perfect rate: slow enough to savor the setting, but quick enough to keep me interested in what was going to happen next. The main characters were phenomenal; I couldn’t believe the hardships both Brian and Elizabeth endured and overcame so that they could be together. Brian refers to Elizabeth throughout the novel as his angel of Innisfree. My favorite quote of the book came in the very last paragraph:“I remember him playing his violin on the Viking rock to comfort the dying then, how he rescued Mary, how he helped the Negroes escape on the Underground Railroad, how he helped the wounded soldiers at Antietam, and a hundred other kindnesses over the years, and it occurs to me that he may have been the angel of Innisfree all along.” (Elizabeth, epilogue.)The writing style is clear and strong, the history is fascinating and informative, the characters are compelling, and the love story is one for the ages.WeaknessesIn a book this strong it is hard to come up with any weaknesses. It was perhaps a little long, but it really was a story I wanted to savor and take my time with. (Unfortunately, I didn’t have that luxury!)ConclusionI am at a loss for why this book only has a few reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. It is as good a book as any I have ever read. Readers, let’s band together and share the word about this good tale! If you haven’t read it yet, go get a copy now. I promise you won’t regret it!I give The Angel of Innisfree a full 5 stars, wishing I could give it more. For more of my reviews, please visit http://goodtales.novelblogs.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great novel! By Michael McPherson Wonderful book - loved the writing style. An enormous amount of historical research was obviously done and the attention to detail is impeccable. I found the creative use of first person perspective for multiple characters a uniquely interesting way to tell the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What I liked most about The Angel of Innisfree is the historical ... By mellowe What I liked most about The Angel of Innisfree is the historical context this romantic novel is set in. The author begins the story in Ireland during the potato famine with Brian O’Rourke, our protagonist facing the hardships of that time and the seeds that built his character and determination. The other character we meet is Elizabeth Reilly, a more well-to-do lass but who has a compassionate heart and a passion for her music. Their journey through life and to America, both separate but eventually finding each other is what kept me turning the page. Also, what made for an interesting story is the historical setting and the people, who made major contributions in society and history, that these two main characters encountered along their journey to each other. If you like epic-type romances, then you won’t be disappointment with this read.

The freakish little leader of the orchestra, newly imported from Sicily to New York, tossed his conductor's wand excitedly through the air, drowning with musical thunders the hum of conversation and the clatter of plates. Yet neither his apish demeanour nor the deafening noises that responded to every movement of his agile body detracted attention from the figure of Reginald Clarke and the young man at his side as they smilingly wound their way to the exit.

There's really no sexual overtones and all of the main characters are interested in people of the opposite sex at various points in time. There are only two kisses in the entire book and that's as far as it goes. So if you wanted this book for sex, look elsewhere. That said, this is really a splendid read. The ending is the most shocking part, so make sure to read to the very end. Definitely a twist you don't expect. The whole concept of a vampire who is focused on becoming a literary genius by stealing artistic ability is fresh and exciting. Highly recommended.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Classic of the Genre By Peter N. Jones This is an early classic in the genre. Not about the usual blood sucking vampire you find in today's books - although blood is part of it - but rather about a vampire, love, and the psychology of having something desired. Don't be fooled by the beginning either, it is the ending that contains the twist and surprise. A must read if you are a fan of the dark, mysterious, and forbidden.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Scary and Strange By C. Richard Not about the usual blood sucking ghoul, but a vampire just the same. It was written a while ago, so the language might sound a little funny to more modern ears. I understand that the author had a very bizarre history. The ending is quite surprising and shocking - reminded me of a good horror movie, but without the usual monsters and gore fest. I don't know where the writer of the book description saw all the sexual overtones - if any - they were buried pretty deeply if you ask me.

Many of the characters are taken from the pages of history - where they are often portrayed as demonic and one- dimensional. In this story, these same characters - like Goring and Himmler - are given motivation and depth that while not justifying their beliefs - at least allows for a plausible motivation for their often horrendous actions.

For years, children and adults have stuffed their candid dreams, wishes, and promises into envelopes addressed to Santa Claus. Whether the envelopes come with stamps or without, are addressed to "The Big Red Guy at Jingle Bells Lane" or simply "To Santa," for over 100 years, millions of these letters have poured into Santa Claus, Indiana. Arriving from all corners of the globe, the letters ask for toys, family reunions, snow, and help for the needy―sometimes the needy being the writers themselves. They are candid, heartfelt, and often blunt. Many children wonder how Santa gets into their chimneyless homes. One child reminds Santa that she has not hit her brothers over 1,350 times that year, and another respectfully requests two million dollars in "cold cash." One child hopes to make his life better with a time machine, an adult woman asks for a man, and one miscreant actually threatens Santa’s reindeer! Containing more than 250 actual letters and envelopes from the naughty and nice reaching back to the 1930s, this moving book will touch readers’ hearts and bring back memories of a time in our lives when the man with a white beard and a red suit held out the hope that our wishes might come true.

Review

"The practice of writing to St. Nick tells a broader history of America itself...Notes sent to Santa are an unlikely lens through which to understand the past, offering a peek into the worries, desires and quirks of the times in which they were written." ―Smithsonian

"Yes, there is a Santa Claus!" ―Mrs. Claus, The North Pole

"This well-presented, historical collection―reflecting both the naughty and nice―will entertain and offer insights into the human condition... A heartwarming collection of original letters written to Santa and processed via the dedicated volunteer 'elves' of Santa Claus, Ind." ―Shelf Awareness

"Often hilarious, the letters to Santa Claus, Indiana, are a gift to all of us." ―Indianapolis Monthly

"This sweet and nostalgic compilation of over 80 years of young believers’ holiday wishes (many in adorable handwriting) puts a unique spotlight on events of the day." ―Parade Magazine

"A heartwarming and delightful collection, dating back to the 1930s..." ―Huffington Post

"...This lovely book will make even the man in red smile." ―Fort Wayne Magazine

"This colorful, coffee-table book reproduces the original letters―with their faded ink, stained paper, childish handwriting, and whimsical drawings―so readers feel as if they are sifting through boxes of old correspondence...The collection of letters is both heartbreaking and heartwarming." ―Bloom Magazine

"Poignant...The correspondents apologized for their poor handwriting and their recent misdeeds, and they offered to work alongside the elves. They also confided secrets: 'mama cries at night when she thinks we are asleep, because she has no money.' One prisoner in Indiana, hoping to be released in time for Christmas, asked Santa for a lawyer and an appeal bond." ―The New York Times

"The missives will inform readers about the times in which they were written and are often very affecting. The first one, for example, is from a nine-year-old girl in the 1930s asking for warm gloves, shoes, and underwear for her siblings. Listing them by name, she closes the missive 'and the rest are dead.' Other letters name dozens of toys to bring, plaintively ask for the writer's heart's desire ('the thing I want most is a dog. dog. dog.'), or even try bargaining ('I will trade you my sister when she comes from the stork for a elf')...A touching gift book that also offers an unusual window into American history." ―Library Journal

"Spanning nine decades, from the 1930s through the 2010s, the letters provide a window into the ever-shifting economic and cultural landscape of modern America. They are alternately silly and somber, hilarious and heartfelt...Reading Letters to Santa Claus won’t necessarily make you more optimistic about America’s future, but it will give you a deeper perspective on America’s past. It also will help everyone understand why the unique role of Santa Claus in the popular imagination is bound to endure." ―The Weekly Standard

"The town? Santa Claus. It's a place that sounds like some Christmas tale. But the town is real, with a history that is long, genuine and a bit peculiar..." ―Will Higgins, USA Today / Indianapolis Star

"Some of the most poignant, hilarious and unusual letters from around the world..." ―The Examiner

Simpson I ordered my first copy of this book in early December, and I loved it so much that I turned around and ordered six more copies for gifts. Everyone who has received a copy has loved it. The book is FUN. Very well written and organized and just loaded with things I don't think I could find in any other Christmas Book. I will be buying more copies for those who missed this one this year. Great to have as a tabletop book or to read for great dreams before going to sleep.

We used to visit Santa Claus, IN in the 1950's-60's. It is a nice book, but many of the letters aren't really legible on a tablet. I hope the printed book is better. I wouldn't waste the money on a Kindle or iPad book, though.

It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers. For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the 'clerk class', the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. This is vintage Sarah Waters: beautifully described with excruciating tension, real tenderness, believable characters, and surprises. It is above all, a wonderful, compelling story.

The Paying Guests, by Sarah Waters

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: It is 1922, in a genteel house in a genteel neighborhood just outside of London. Here, the widowed Mrs. Wray and her 26-year-old daughter, Frances, pass each day very much like the day before—with Frances busying herself with household chores, maybe a bit of needlepoint, and her mother nibbling on a lunch of cauliflower cheese while making notes for the parish newsletter. In less skilled hands, such prolonged stage-setting would test even the most patient reader. But in Waters’, it’s mesmerizing, with every small but evocative detail serving to transport you further into this place and time. Take a deep breath as you’re reading, because as soon as you are you lulled into the calm cadence of these lives, the Wray’s tenants—the “paying guests” they have taken in to help with the bills—turn everything topsy-turvy, and by the novel’s conclusion, you have gone from straight-up period piece, to love story, to edge-of-your-seat crime thriller (and not the American kind “with a plot full of holes” that the Wrays suffer through on picture-house Wednesdays). For a story set just after WWI, some of the themes Waters touches on are surprisingly contemporary. History does repeat itself sometimes, and so it goes for Sarah Waters, with yet another masterful novel. –Erin Kodicek

Review Absolutely brilliant -- Jacqueline Wilson Sunday Times A page-turning melodrama and a fascinating portrait of London on the verge of great change Guardian Waters's page-turning prose conceals great subtlety. Acutely sensitive to social nuance, she keeps us constantly alert ... From a novelist who has been shortlisted for the Booker three times, this is a winner Intelligent Life (The Economist) The novel's remarkable depth of field - from its class-ridden background to its individuals' peccadilloes - is sharply portrayed by an author writing at her best. Waters's 20-20 vision perceives the interior world of her characters with rare acuity in a prose style so smooth it pours down the page in a book to be prized Scotland on Sunday A sumptuously subdued story of making do and getting by after the great war -- Philip Hensher Guardian Brilliantly involving ... juicy, beautifully observed [and] not afraid to be explicit Metro A triumph Woman & Home You will be hooked within a page ... At her greatest, Waters transcends genre: the delusions in Affinity (1999), the vulnerability in Fingersmith (2002), the undercurrents of social injustice and the unexplained that underlie all her work, take her, in my view, well beyond the capabilities of her more seriously regarded Booker-winning peers. But The Paying Guests is the apotheosis of her talent; at least for now. I have tried and failed to find a single negative thing to say about it. Her next will probably be even better. Until then, read it, Flaubert, Zola, and weep -- Charlotte Mendelson Financial Times A masterpiece of social unease ... It isn't so much the plot that makes you read on - the novel's armature is a comparatively uncomplicated suspense narrative but barnacled to it is an astonishing accretion of detail ... A virtuoso feet of storytelling -- Jane Shilling Evening Standard She give(s) us a poignant love story which symbolically sees in the death of the old order, the death of the old fashioned husband and maybe the birth of an era of love without secrets Independent Waters is brilliant The Times A nod towards Little Dorrit also seems perceptible in the book's quiet ending amid the bustle and clamour of London. Unillusioned but tentatively hopeful, it is a beautifully gauged conclusion to a novel of ambitious reach and triumphant accomplishment -- Peter Kemp Sunday Times The Paying Guests demonstrates the writerly qualities for which Waters is esteemed, proving as 'fantastically moody and resonant', in terms of the rendering of domestic space, as a novel the author herself described as such and which she once said she would like to have written: Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca Literary Review Sarah Waters is, quite simply, one of our greatest writers -- Joanna Briscoe Sunday Express Another wild ride of a novel ... [I was] helplessly pulled along by the magnetic storytelling -- Tracy Chevalier Observer Sumptuous ... The writing is impeccable. A joy in every respect -- Lionel Shriver New Statesman An uninterruptable joy of a novel ... Sarah Waters at her tip-top best -- Juliet Nicolson Evening Standard The Paying Guests is so evocative and compelling that all the time I was reading, I had a feeling it was me who had done something terrible, instead of her characters -- Rachel Joyce Observer Fiction book of the year This novel magnificently confirms [Sarah Waters's] status as an unsurpassed fictional recorder of vanished eras and hidden lives Sunday Times The Paying Guests reminded me just how clever it is to create characters that captivate through their adventures in a world so well-realised that you can almost reach out and touch it -- Zoe Strachan Sunday Herald I raced through it, breathing fast and when I had finished had to reread parts of the wonderful early chapters. I don't like historical novels but this is the exception. I shall let a few months go by and then read it all over again with, I'm sure, undiminished pleasure -- Ruth Rendall Guardian Super-gripping ... There is a huge momentum to this story -- William Leith Evening Standard Sickeningly tense - and thumpingly good Daily Mail You know you are in the hands of a skilful, confident writer when you read a Sarah Waters book. She slowly reels you in. She weaves plots and themes that creep up and entangle you while you are innocently following her characters. They go about their shadowy business and by the time you raise your head from the page to take a breath, you're hooked -- Viv Albertine Telegraph Waters is an author to cherish Guardian Masterly... delightful... tremendously vivid... Waters is a cracking storyteller Tatler Waters is not simply one of our best historical novelists, but one of our best novelists ... sooner or later, she's going to be given the Booker. If you haven't already, start reading her now, and be one step ahead of the crowd -- Matt Thorne Independent on Sunday

About the Author Sarah Waters was born in Wales in 1966. She has been shortlisted for the Man Booker and Orange prizes and has won The South Bank Show Award and The Somerset Maugham Award. By Mary Lins Perhaps I am too enamored of Masterpiece and BBC shows such as “Sherlock”, “The Bletchley Circle” and “Foyle’s War”, for, the entire time I was reading Sarah Waters’ wonderful new novel, “The Paying Guests”, I was casting it for a period-piece Masterpiece Mystery. All the ingredients are here: wonderful characters of all classes and temperaments, a richly moody time in London history, an arresting story of love, murder and betrayal that asks the ultimate question about doing the right thing and at what personal cost?Sarah Waters is a masterful storyteller, not just because her plots grab you, but because her prose is sublime. I have many reader pals for whom “prose is everything” and they will gobble this treat up like the richest dessert. Suspense like Waters’ takes my breath away, and the quality of writing reminds me why I love to read. The first third of the novel sets the stage and introduces us to the once happy home in a good area of London where Francis Wray and her mother now live. It’s 1922 and the post-WWI economy has forced them to take in boarders, the “paying guests”. Enter Lillian and Len Barber, a young married couple recently moved out of Len’s parent’s house to rent rooms with the Wrays. Francis is almost immediately attracted to Lillian, and Lillian is unhappy with Len; the stage is illuminated. The middle third of the novel contains the thrillingly suspenseful commission of several crimes. Here Waters speeds up the action and this reader couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. The last third deals with the aftermath of the crimes and is every bit as gripping and suspenseful. As the revelations of this early twentieth century investigation unfold and a trial begins, we have surrendered ourselves completely to Sarah Walters’ bewitching tale.

I have liked some of her books better than others, with Fingersmith remaining my favorite. So The Paying Guests comes as a deep disappointment. It is overwrought and lugubrious, with central characters it is very hard to care about. Ironically, I found the secondary characters more alive, more viable than Frances and Lilian, the primaries. Leonard, the husband, and Lilian's family, all breathe deeply, bubbling with energy, and step off the pages. But Frances and Lilian are a tiresome duo and 560 pages of their few ups and many, many downs make for difficult reading. The Paying Guests are at Frances's home because there is a great need for the income they bring to her and her widowed mother. But aside from an early mention of what that cash represents, and given that the money is so badly needed, it seems a most serious omission to go close to 500 pages before it is mentioned again.Frances's endless internal anguishing becomes hard to take. This is a woman who lacks very little degree of lightness or humor. She just can't get outside of her own head. And Lilian is something of a cipher. The view of her character seems to change depending on Frances's whims and moods. There are moments when things jolt to life, most notably the confrontation scene between Lilian, her husband Len, and Frances. There is great tension in this encounter but it is soon overwhelmed by the massive weight of pages and pages of interior description.Having looked at the other reviews, I'm kind of amazed to see this book referred to as a "thriller," and as possessed of the makings of a Masterpiece Mystery. We can't have read the same 560-odd pages. This novel would have been better served by more stringent editing, cutting away some of the endless tours through Frances's mental maundering so that the narrative drive was stronger and sharper. As it stands, this book is slow-going--truly a slog to get to the end.

The Paying Guests By Brendan Moody All of Sarah Waters' novels have historical rather than contemporary settings, and most have featured lesbians as prominent characters, but I think she is best described not as a lesbian novelist (there's something faintly diminishing about that label), or even as a historical novelist, but as a writer of literary thrillers. That this may seem an odd label is a sign of how, despite certain common settings and themes, Waters adapts her tone and style to the demands of each type of thriller: erotic (TIPPING THE VELVET), Gothic (AFFINITY and FINGERSMITH), or ghostly (THE LITTLE STRANGER). Even THE NIGHT WATCH, perhaps the least plot-driven and most "literary" of Waters' novels, attains a certain thrilling quality from its reversed narrative structure. So what type of thriller is her latest, THE PAYING GUESTS? That would be telling. At first it seems to combine elements of THE NIGHT WATCH and THE LITTLE STRANGER, though with a setting after the First World War rather than the Second. Like the Ayres family of THE LITTLE STRANGER, the Wrays face social and emotional upheaval as a result of post-war changes. But theirs is a more modest existence: the home they can no longer maintain is no grand manor but an ordinary house, one that was once full of life but now feels empty after the loss of two sons in the war, and the sudden death of the father around the same time. The latter grief revealed a series of bad investments that has stretched the family's finances to the breaking point: even with Frances Wray doing all the housework there isn't enough for her and her mother to live on. And so they make the fateful decision to rent part of the upstairs to what decorum demands they call, not lodgers, but paying guests. As that meaningless distinction might suggest, the theme of class anxiety is prominent in the novel's first pages, as the Wrays adjust to the somewhat bracing behavior of Lilian and Leonard ("Lil and Len") Barber. Waters has a keen eye for the small disturbances that inevitably follow from sharing a household with even well-behaved and likable strangers. More importantly, she understands how people do and do not conform to ideas of character type. There's a harshness to Frances from all she has lost, and a snobbishness about sharing her house with lower-class types, but she's hardly a stereotypical spinster: she has alternating impulses toward generosity and cruelty that are very true to life, and Waters gradually reveals a personal history that speaks both to Frances' personality and to the particular concerns of that historical moment. Another of Waters' rare gifts is the ability to create in readers a sense of the past, not through the layering of conventionally vivid language or of period detail, but through describing ordinary moments in which difference reveals itself by flashes. Although the narrative moves slowly in this opening section, its creation of the rhythms of daily life is so natural, so careful to avoid moments of false drama, that it never feels slow-moving. In some ways, this is the best part of the novel.Given time, of course, the plot kicks in. I won't say too much about it, although Waters' longtime readers may be able to work out some of its developments in advance, as I did. Past a certain point, there's really only one way things can go, which makes the book less exciting on narrative terms than some of Waters' others, though that may just be my impression because this type of thriller isn't one I especially enjoy. The demands of the plot also work against the subtler exploration of character and setting that had been a strength earlier on, though the ambiguities of character are not so much abandoned as submerged. As in earlier novels, Waters is interested in the way secrets, even welcome ones, force a moral and emotional coarsening, and in the line between love and infatuation. This material may feel a little familiar by now, but Waters can evoke a state of mind with such intensity that the reader begins to feel it herself. Perhaps that's why, despite finding the turns of the plot underwhelming in places, I read the book almost continuously from the moment I received it to the moment I turned the final page. That final page avoids what had seemed a last predictable plot twist in favor of something I had been hoping for but hadn't believed Waters would dare to do. The ending of THE PAYING GUESTS captures the great virtue of Waters' novels: her ability to combine the narrative matter of the thriller with a psychological realism that makes these books more than just page-turners. Frances Wray may be caught up in an entirely conventional sequence of terrible events, but her mindset, and her times, are less conventional, and will offer even readers who share my limited enthusiasm for this subgenre much to enjoy. And those who love that subgenre will find that this is what Sarah Waters always offers: one of the best thrillers of the year.

I am saddened by this because I feel that he was just beginning to find his own very unique voice with his last two books, Gone South and Boy's Life. However, like the characters in Gone South, he has his own path to follow and his own dreams to pursue. It would be wrong for any of his fans to demand he write another book, although we all hope he does (he's still a fairly young man). His latest novel Gone South ranks up there with Swan Song and Boy's Life in my opinion. What makes this one special is his ability to make even the most bizarre and unreal characters seem real. He gets into the hearts of Flint and Pelvis and makes you care for them dispite their absurdity. Dan and Arden are also fascinating and sympathetic characters. But in the midst of McCammon's excellent characterization the action never stops. The book is chock full of chases and shootouts and unexpected plot twists. Also the ending with the revelation of Bright Girl is a beautiful surprise that reaffirms McCammon's message of making the best of the hand you're dealt in life. One review wrote that the ending was Koontz-like in its positiveness. I disagree. In a Koontz book Dan and Arden would have fallen in love and become cured of their ailments and live happily ever after. McCammon is a much better writer than Koontz in my opinion, and leaves the fates of the main characters up in the air. All in all, this is a terrific book, so by all means check it out.

He's having trouble finding a job after returning from Vietnam, he attacked his son in a terrible flashback episode leading to divorce, and he has creditors on his back. Yet despite losing his cool at a bank meeting regarding the repossession of his truck(his livlihood)and attacking and sccidentily killing a bank employee he remains a sympathetic character. The reader can feel his desperation as he heads south with two colourful bounty hunters, one a "freak", and the other an Elvis impersontor on his tail. That has always been one of McCammon's strengths the, the portrayal on paper of fictional characters that are believable to the nth degree, and that can touch the reader's hearts and minds. There are no heroes or villians in this slight departure from some of McCammon's well-known works, but rather a collection of anti-heroes colourfully brought to life to drive a powerful narrative. What a clever novel. Without wanting to include too many spoilers in this review I may say it should be no surprise the title is in fact a phrase with double meaning. This story is atypical as pointed out above of some of McCammon's works, he is known for sharing a genre with Koontz and King after all but this is no horror story, rather a moving thriller that plucks all the heartstrings of a reader. Hopefully this review does not make this tome sound wishy washy as it is far from that, rather the author's storytelling prowess are at their peak telling a tale about a disenfranchised Vietnam vet, that I would argue was even more powerful than King's Hearts in Atlantis. This book would in fact get five stars, but of course it was not PERFECT, there were some issues I shared with fellow reviewers about the ending that did not diminish however the overall impact of the novel.

When I picked up Gone South, I was under the impression it would be something dark, gritty...something that might make me hold my breath through a few eye-popping paragraphs of horror or near-horror. What I got was totally unexpected and delightfully welcomed...Gone South is weird! Not quite weird like most of McCammon's books are, but delightfully, touchingly, wacky and weird, and chock full of action and surprises! This should be made into a film simply because it would be the oddest buddy film ever. From page to page you'll have no idea what to expect next, and the whole thing plays out like a fantastic roller coaster ride. Bizarre. Bittersweet. Laugh-out-loud. Shake your head in wonderment. Read this book!

Review of ‘Red Sky in the Morning’ by Robert Atkinson By Dayna Leigh Cheser In the prequel, 'The Last Sunset', people vanished from their own time, reappearing in 1746. These intrepid time travelers changed history with their presence. A key event in the Scots timeline never happened. Now, in 'Red Sky in the Morning', a new reality emerges; a new dawn for Scotland. How would Scots history play out if the Battle of Culloden had never happened? Would the changes affect the world stage – then, now, and in the future? In these pages, you’ll live in a world, almost 270 years ago, when the presence of English troops in the Highlands meant danger and death. Life was hard in their beautiful land, but to the Highlanders, this was their home. The time travelers brought changes, but were the changes for the better? The Highlanders risk everything so they might know. Will our world get a second chance? In his sequel to ‘The Last Sunset’, Mr. Atkinson weaves a thought-provoking alternate reality for his beloved Scotland. The vivid scenes he paints will take you there, where you’ll witness the struggle that could change everything. I hope we see more from this talented author and storyteller in the near future.Mr. Atkinson and Red Sky in the Morning receive a second 5-Star rating.Dayna Leigh Cheser, Author

By Julie Atkinson I'll be honest, I have been waiting for this sequel ever since I finished 'The Last Sunset' and was torn between overwhelming excitement and a certain amount of fear to have the 2nd book in my hands. Well, that fear was unfounded. This author, who had already mastered his craft, has taken his writing to another level; not only in developing the plot and action, which in this installment reaches its dizzying conclusion, but the relationships between the characters and even the characters knowledge of themselves as they grow and are tested in this dangerous new world. Be prepared for sleepless nights as you will struggle to put this book down! Also be prepared for tears as I challenge you not to fall in love with these characters, but remember this is war and blood will be spilt! But its not all doom and gloom as Mr Atkinson, like all great authors, manages to keep us laughing as often as we gasp. I loved this book and I really hope we see more novels from this author.

Garcia I have been looking forward to this book since I had finished the first book in the series, with which I was wowed. This is a well done alternative history sure to intrigue anyone that has those "what if" questions about how things might be different if the course of history had run differently. This was well plotted out, each action having an impact on the new course, and the time traveler's paradox of "what happens if I kill an ancestor" was handled wonderfully. If a person loves Scottish history they will not be disappointed by the depth of this. The romances also were well done, neither over the top nor inadequately touched on.I truly hope he intends to write more books. I would love another series from him. In the storyline one of the characters mentioned that maybe there were other places in the world with wounds to fix. There are so many points in history that also might lead to that last dreadful red sky, or to other possible scenarios. This was one of those books that really brings home those two words: what if?

Roth This is a wonderfully inspiring picture book about a rescue dog and how she graced everyone’s life by her resiliency and unceasing love, including her daddy’s life in the final stages of cancer. This is a story about Bella Eve. She was born on August 21st, 2013 along with her three siblings. Her first home was in a dangerous neighborhood and her mommy and daddy didn’t properly care for her and her siblings. So, the police took them away and they were brought into a shelter. They stayed at the rescue for six weeks. They all hoped that they would be adopted by a loving family who would give them a forever home. One day, Bella Eve got her wish and a kind loving family came to pick her up. However, she was sad to leave her siblings. But somehow she thought it would be okay. She found out later that she was a birthday gift for her daddy who was dying of cancer. Bella Eve believed that all would go well. But as her daddy got sicker and sicker, she continued loving him and wishing that he would get well soon. But sadly things only got worse, and one day, her daddy didn’t come back. She was very sad. But she still tried to be hopeful and carry on, despite some sad days. This book will be enjoyed by younger and older children alike. It is a book that shows the value of resiliency and how one little puppy showed everyone that life is really what you make it. Thank you Kasey for such a wonderful picture book!

Will Reconstruction really change America?

Historical fiction is my passion. I so love bringing history to life - the reason I dedicate most of my time to writing historical fiction books!

Shifted By The Winds is the 8th book in the ongoing Bregdan Chronicles historical novel series. It's readers like you who have turned it into a worldwide bestseller. Thank you!

Description: Carrie and her housemates battle cholera in Philadelphia. Her world is turned upside down when she discovers the truth of her heritage. Will it completely change her path?

Robert watches his dreams fade before his eyes when he refuses to align himself with southern beliefs after the war. Rose has to face down a new threat, and Moses is forced to step into the role he has avoided.

Janie has agreed to marry Matthew, but can she actually move beyond her fears and become his wife? And will Jeremy realize Marietta’s life as a Mulatto’s wife is just too dangerous for the woman he loves?

So many of the characters you have come to know and love face both challenges and joys in this turbulent time in history.

Volume # 8 of the Bregdan Chronicles continues the sweeping historical saga that now encompasses the second year of American Reconstruction.

** How many books will be in the Bregdan Chronicles? You'll have to ask God about that... I intend to write these character's stories, one year at a time, for as long as I'm able to write. I'm passionate about bringing history to life through historical fiction. Since I'm amazingly healthy, that could be for a very long time! I don't like stories to end any more than you do. This one won't end for a very long time!

About the Author

Ginny would love to get to know every single person who reads her books. Since that isn't possible she can at least let you get to know her a little. Born in North Carolina, she is a wanderer at heart. She has lived all over the United States, exploring every state and having wonderful adventures along the way. She has managed horse ranches in Texas and Oregon; worked with teenagers all over the country (she love them!), and has hiked, biked, rafted and played in every locale she could.

She loves all the beaches, deserts, woods, and mountains she has traveled through but when she discovered Washington, she discovered home. Her heart is at home there with the snow covered mountains; the glistening waters of the Pacific; the eagles and Orca whales; the towering fir trees surrounding her home; and the miles of trails on her own Magic Mountain.

Everywhere she looks inspires her to be all she can be - to follow and achieve all the dreams of her heart! She managed to write and publish 16 books along the way. She enjoys writing many different genres but admits Historical Fiction is her favorite. She is quite sure she will never live long enough to write all her heart and mind holds, but she certainly intends to try!

She is also the Founder of I Am A Voice In The World. This fabulous organization is committed to creating a world-wide community of people with a passion to make a difference and live their best life - using the multitude of FREE resources provided.

Her life will forever be a journey. She knows she will never get to the place where she thinks she has "arrived". The more she learns - the more she knows she doesn't know! Yet. what joy she receives by sharing the light she has... She would love to hear from you at BregdanChronicles.net

Slower, more Thoughtful than the other Bregdan Books By Eliezer Rosengaus Trying to hang in there until Book 9 comes out – although in the meantime I highly recommend Joseph's Dream to anybody else who is slightly obsessed with this kind of historical fiction...The final novel (so far) in the Bregdan Chronicles, Shifted with the Winds is a slower, more thoughtful, more personal book than its prequels. Even Carried Forward by Hope and Glimmers of Change, which both take place after the end of the Civil War, deal with race riots, displaced families, and KKK demonstrations, as well as the worst maritime disaster in American history.Shifted with the Winds begins in a similar vein, with a harrowing, edge-of-your-seat climax, when the so-called firefighters burn down the new cholera hospital in Moyamensing, while Carrie, Janie, and the other women medical students narrowly escape. This really grabs the reader's attention from the very first page, but the rest of the entire book focuses on the social interactions and family histories of the characters. By contrast with the earlier books in the series, Shifted with the Winds is more of a social drama than a war drama, and in some ways I like it even better. My favorite scene recreates the Harvest Festival Tournament from Storm Clouds Rolling In, where Carrie first fell in love with Robert. The 1860 Tournament and the 1866 Tournament are perfect bookends that show exactly how much Cromwell Plantation has changed during the war years. Now the women and the freed slaves are jousting, and a little girl wins because the grownups all work too hard to have time to practice. What seemed like a big important competition in 1860 is now just a game, a nostalgic recreation of the past that only serves to highlight how far gone that past actually is.And yet, the past is never entirely over for Ginny Dye. The slower-paced plot of this last book allows for a more thorough discussion of the Bregdan Principle, which I like to think of as Ginny's personal mission statement. Long, thoughtful discussions between Carrie and Biddy trace the long-term impact of a person's choices and actions, whether the person in question is Oliver Cromwell or Carrie Cromwell. When Carrie and Thomas go into emotional tailspins after learning that their famous ancestor was personally responsible for enslaving hundreds of thousands of Irish, Ginny Dye is speaking to us directly from her own experiences. Just like Carrie tries to redeem her family's past by dropping out of medical school to go fight cholera in the Irish neighborhood, Ginny writes these books because her family owned slaves for generations. Read about it in Ginny's blog: http://ginnydyeblog.homestead.com

The people are so real that I want to go and meet them. and I have to tell myself they would not be alive today and this is in not real only the history is. I just can not get enough of Carrie. Robert, Rose, Moses, and Abby. I really love these books to the point that I can hardly wait for the next. Thanks you for all your research and the way you tell a story. It puts me there and I just want to be on that plantantion.

But I will say that I believe a person would benefit the most from this amazing series if they would read the first book By dianeb19 Ginny Dye has done it again! This book is so new that I don't want to do any spoilers in this review. But I will say that I believe a person would benefit the most from this amazing series if they would read the first book, Storm Clouds Rolling In, and then proceed from there. That way, you become acquainted with all of the characters in the series and what they have all been through. In this one, book #8 in the series, it is just after the Civil War has ended and even though slavery was abolished, the South will not accept that their way of life is gone forever. Some of them are still trying to hold onto to the old way of life no matter what the cost. Which makes living in the south dangerous for all blacks or anyone who stands with the blacks. We, once again, follow Carrie Cromwell Borden, on her journey through life and the amazing things this woman accomplishes. If you are a person who enjoys reading about the Civil War Era, I think you will love this book. At times, throughout the reading of this series, the politics were a bit daunting for me, but the politics are necessary for one to know what is happening in the country at the time. It is my opinion that Ginny Dye is a genius at being a writer. It is so very obvious that she's had to put hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into research in order to write this magnificent series The Bregdan Chronicles. It is the very best account of life in the south before, during, and after the Civil War that I have ever read. I just hate that I must wait another year before reading book# 9.
